Don't ever do a top 50% split unless the whole of the bottom and the whole of the top are interesting subjects.

Instead, in your bad picture, 90% of bottom is ugly muck and sand with nothing and 90% of the top is ordinary fucking water.

By including that 90% of noise, you've managed to shrink the people to the point where there is zero detail or emotion or story-telling from looking at them, as they just look like random people in the distance (a 3rd thing people can see every day of the fucking year no matter where they live)

At your level of no-experience, you'll be better served by sticking to rule-of-thirds and keeping subjects close enough you can nail focus on their eyeballs.

I also suffer from lack of artistic ability and understanding. I feel like a complete retard for not knowing what makes a good photograph, or good art in general. I just don't ``get'' it. It's like it's right in front of me and I can't see it, I'm blind!

/p/ can you explain how i was able to spend $1500 on good gear that I use 1/20th the time compared to a computer that I've spent at most $400 on even though its where like 18/20 the other time goes.

Not sure how I feel. I got good deals on it and I'll likely keep them for a long long time, but it just feels weird putting that much into something I only picked up a year ago. Anyone else know what I mean?

I didn't even realize my computer was obsolete until it broke and I got a new one. I'm a software engineer and am on it all day. The computer was okay when I bought it and does everything that fits my habits, so I didn't realize it had gone to shit.

In the two years I've been doing photography, I've spent about $10k on gear. I started just to have something do.

In the 15 years I've been writing software, I've spent maybe $3k on computers.

I can't explain that.

Man I'm really slacking, I've only shot around 4k this year. Back when I was /p/ro I'd shoot 50-100k a year, often 10-15k over a single event. (Multi-day auto racing stuff with two bodies blasting at 9fps all day.)

I should really go shoot something, but it's hard to get interested in spur of the moment stuff nowadays, and I don't have a wide angle for my new system yet so I'm not really geared up for landscape etc.

Start out slow and small and cheap. If you like it after a few months or something then you can start dropping $$$ on it

It's pretty crazy when you're on deadline. The usual routine was just to blast through them as fast as possible with Photo Mechanic, and then stop as soon as I'd found enough solid shots to suit the article. It helps that I could usually jump to the points where I knew the relevant stuff would be, and with auto racing it's pretty easy to ID the winning car or whatever from the thumbnails.

I still go back into my archive and look through old stuff once in a while, though, and I always come out with a few new gems.

Well just think about this, right?
You bought that CF card for $40 and shot 3 keepers. But tomorrow you can use that card again. And the day after, again. And in 4 years. And if you're lucky, perhaps 10 years.
You may, in that CF card's lifetime, produce over 1000 keepers.
But on that roll of film, you will only produce 10. Only 10. You can't ever change that, you need to spend another $5 on more film to take more photos.
Not to mention the 5DMKIII can hold a SD card as well.
