But otherwise highly reflective coins are overexposed, how do I deal with that? I used built in flash and additional diffused flash from side to show the texture of the coins.

I think you need to set up a white box around the coins for some super even diffused lighting. That should cut down on the reflections since everything should be relatively evenly lit from all directions.

Why don't you try using pure white unruled or even black paper? I can see in some images that the coins are picking up the red from the paper.
