I really should've wiped down that shot but vodka has a way with making one less attentive! And its 4am.
I realised I stripped the EXIF data! Sorry lads.
Shooting a D7000 with a 35mm in the first shot and 11mm in the second. 1/250 f/8 for both of them.
First shot used a gelled blue flash to the camera left and a bare flash shot into the bottle from below. .
Second shot used gelled orange flash for camera left fill and 6in softboxed light for the right.
Just fucking around with some strobes in the early hours of the morning.

I shot those books. I mostly agree with you. I shot this on my bed and the books/backdrop were not playing nice.
Cheers for reinforcing my dislike of my own photo. It was more a test concept. My main issue with it is the large OOF area at the front (on the Qur'an).
This was more a test shot than anything to evaluate my backdrop (got acess to big rolls of brown paper) as well as play around with my new YN-560IIIs with built in radio triggers (a real freaking dream to use).

You need some kind of tracking system. The cheap ghetto way is called a barn door tracker (google can get you directions for making and using) Otherwise, you're looking at buying another tripod head and some kind of equatorial mount.

I don't think I've ever posted here looking for critique, but the majority of the time I'll receive it regardless. I'm not complaining though, it's always nice to get a second opinion. However that doesn't mean I'm going to go out of my way to thank someone for unintentional critique.

I want to like this. But I don't.
The composition is quite nice. I like that you can only faintly see the woman/mom.
I think the problem is the blurred hand and the bad facial expression of the child.
Also, you might try and tweak the colors a bit more. both the child and the mother's skin tones look horrible.
Either way, this is pretty close to a good photograph.

I think it's more to do with slow shutter &/or high ISO. First was 1/50th & the second was f/1.1 @ ISO 3200... I can definitely get sharpness with the same camera/export settings in better light.
