flucard - controls pentax K3 from a device, possibly other models as well
magic lantern - is generally useful for canon, so look it up even if not remote related.
Pan heads are often controllable, especially gigapano heads.
Simple wired or IR remotes and intervalometers can control cameras, but not like you probably mean.

1. is often referred to as 'tethering'. Search on that. Software like Lightroom and Capture One do USB cable tethering and support a lot of cameras.
