definitely the whistle. harmonicas are grating and annoying. with a whistle you can enchant the forest around you, and with the right tune, attract a strapping young prince and live happily ever after.

https://clyp.it/fkj041mz
>>
>>989223
Harmonica definitely. Packs easier. Greater octive range. Available in like 21 keys. Can play along with wider range of other instruments and still sound good. Looks more like eating tacos than tickling a pickle.
>>
Gotta go with the harmonica. Pretty easy to pick up and learn plus imagine the sweet feeling of roaming the desert playing the blues or traveling in the mountains tootin some folk songs.
>>
>>989223
OP, What would happen if you stick the penny whistle up your ass and farted?

I got an armonica as well.

The story: My great grandpa immigrated to america from italy in the early 1900s when he was about 8 years old. his dad had bought him a swiss harmonica for the voyage. when he was 18 he was drafted to fight in europe in WWI, and he brought the harmonica back to europe with him for two years. survived the war, came home and got married and had his own family. his son (my grandpa) got drafted to fight in WWII - brought the now ~40yr old harmonica BACK to europe, invaded germany, survived, and returned to the US. he got married and had his two daughters, and then the harmonica hadn't been seen since the 50s or 60s. when my grandmother finally died in 2007 my mom found it again in a drawer - having not seen it for decades and thinking it was gone. now i have it. it's over 100 years old, my great great grandpa, great grandpa, and grandpa all played it and it survived both world wars.

it's a bit out of tune now so although i keep it with me when i move and such, i don't bring it /out/ or play it really. i have a cheep one to play but i suck.

I own a harmonica but can't do more than really simple tunes.
Still pretty fun, takes a little more effort to learn than a pennywhistle but there's way more you can do with it and it's actually a fully capable solo instrument if you get good. They're also pretty sturdy, get one with a plastic comb so you don't need to worry about moisture damage and can clean it out by dunking it in a lake and shaking it.
If you get a neck brace you can play while walking, if you're into that sort of thing.

There's also a variety of mini stringed instruments. Nowhere near as portable as a harmonica, but strapping a uke or mandolin to a pack is definitely doable, and way more impressive to pull out at a campsite.

I found out that the only thing I don't like about wind instruments is that for 99% of them the sound is pretty much too loud for me to be that damn close to them. I'd need to wear ear plugs, seriously. However, I can play my didgeridoo all night long and have no problems like that. Probably because the tones is different and it is really really long. Then again my circular breathing is shit because of nasal cycle.

Here's some of my didgeridoo with my djembe. Just some old repetitive practice stuff. Playing both at the same time is harder than I imagined. If you have bass speakers, you need to crank them to have this sound anything like what it sounds like in person. Headphones may not work well unless they are good quality.

>>
>>989938
Practice makes perfect. Learn the 360 degree breathing to ease your nasal cycle.
And learn the djole rythm for the djembe, it's really simple and you can play with it by changing the speed or trying variations on it.
>>
>>990175
Yeah, a lot of rhythms are like that. I have about 17 core rhythms I can actually remember half the time. I have a small travel size djembe and a massive one "King Cheetah Elite Pro" that has its own backpack.

I'd really like to get one of these didges for travel:

http://www.carolinadrums.com/compact-box-didgeridoo/

>ease your nasal cycle

It is a natural body function. When both open they tend to dry out very quickly. That becomes seriously painful.

I haven't read the thread but don't get that particular pennywhistle. They look nice but the wooden mouthpiece clogs up with spit and swells so it squeaks and mutes, *especially* when playing it in the cool outdoor air.

You could leave your water vessel(s) at home and carry water in the horn. Drink from the spit valve.

Another advantage is that woodland creatures can't abscond with it and then keep you up all night with their music, because they have the wrong kind of lips.

Basically what >>992035 said about practicing.

The fella in both >>992037 and>>992041 is mostly right, with the exception of the airflow.

As a preface to this, I play both the Tin Whistle, Ocarina and Trumpet, so I do know what I'm talking about. Above all, practice will improve your technique, and is the ONLY way to do so.

Take a deep breath on the inhale, and experiment with speed of air to not only hit octave notes, but to attain a good tone. Fingers should be covering the holes, and stylization, like flutters and slides, are usually achieved with quick fingerings or changes in airflow, but for the most part stylization comes with practice. Also, look up how to "tweak" your whistle. It helps with tuning and such.

Harmonica but don't buy this model. It's shit. Buy a Marine Band instead.
>>
i play the harmonica for 5 something years both the diatonic and chromatic. You wont like it.Especially the diatonic has a limited note range and the reeds go flat in a couple of months and sounds terrible, you will have to discard the whole instrument since you cannot replace one reed. There are many keys and you will need to carry many harmonicas especially one in A,one in C,D,Bb and G.It is a fun instrument, but not an instrument you will get attached to it,and it is really expensive, probably one of the most expensive instruments, because it has a limited life expectancy. The MS model you posted is shit, the ones you want are marine bands.I also play the guitar for 2 years. It is way cheaper, you pay a lot at first to buy a decent guitar, but the the overaal cost of the strings is less, and you do not need to change all of the strings if one starts to give up on you.You want a sturdy, wind instrument that will last forever, that is easy to play, has a lot of material on the internet and doesnt need any special techiques like bending or overblowing?Recorder(a good wooden one) or a pans flute(a little more difficult and a bit more fragile)The recorder is a serious instrument you can play form celtic or medieval tunes to baroque classical music, you only need one and it sounds mellow and relaxing, compared to the more aggressive harmonica.
>>
>>992132
Many horror movies and scary intense moments in movies/tv shows use that instrument.
>>
>>995126
heres an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVARLQolFk0
>>
>>995130
vivaldi has written fascinating pieces for recordershttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnIB_BDPU_w
>>
>>995126
also,if you choose recorder there is alto, soprano, baritone and tenor.Alto is the one you go,not the others. The alto is the most mellow and all the classical pieces were written for the alto.
>>
>>995138
fuck your pussy little alto recorder tenor sounds awesome
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt4Pnwb36B8
>>
>>995312
tenor musically sounds sharper and more aggressive than alto which is the middle range. All recorders sound nice, but since wind instruments sound a little tiresome to the ear if played without back up for a long time i suggested the alto which sounds full and not too high. Also, like I said classical music pieces were originally written exclusively for the alto. But hey the gereral mindset is to pick the instrument which sounds better to you. However, your istrument(whatever you choose)has to be of a decent quality, you only buy it once(except the harmonica, which as I said you throw it away in a couple of months to buy a new one)it will save you from a lot of frustration especially if you first learn. The recorder in the this video must cost 500 or so dollars, but a recorder in the 200 dollar range will suffice
>>
>>995464
Can't I just get a plastic yamaha? They're only $90, and I'm pretty sure it would be a bad idea to take a wood instrument /out.
>>
>>995586
Buy a wooden recorder,it sounds far better than the plastic in terms of tone and quality of built and sound. The plastic one has a cheap, elementary school kind of sound,it sounds sharp and annoying compared to the mellow tone of the wooden one.All wind instruments are designed to withstand the most humid of conditions, they are made from high quality woods that are chemically treated and varnished in depth. The plastic one is considered a children's toy whereas the wood is a higher quality instrument overall and it will be easier to learn on.
.Think about it,nothing in the environment is more humid and warm that the air you breathe into the recorder,if you have any memories of elementary school(at least at mine the kids had to bring them to school) there were some recorders that were plastic and transparent, when you played them you could see the moisture through the instrument,it looked liked an empty plastic water bottle. You will not have any problems carrying a wooden wind instrument with you out.Its not the same with string ones though. My mentality is to own an instrument I will get attached to and will have good memories of it,and I personally think the plastic recorder cannot play that role, you will get bored of it eventually and you will want to buy a wooden one.You will throw away 90 dollars. But,take my word for it,the wooden recorder will be as durable as the plastic.Besides they come in little cases and you can clean them and care for them since the mouthpiece comes off and the rest is just a hollow tube, will a little piece of cloth, you can wipe the moisture out of it.My overall advice is,dont be cheap buying your first instrument,it will be very frustrating for you to start to learn.

>>
>>989223
It's a little bit of a pain but the last time I went camping I put a 3/4 scale childrens guitar on a sling (use duct tape to make sure it doesn't loosen up on you) and put it on my back on top of my pack.

It doesn't add that much weight and the only reason why anyone shouldn't do it is because it's uncomfortable and maybe a little clumsy if you do a lot of jumping for some reason.
