I'm moving to NW Connecticut and I'm trying to get /out/ when I get there. Any tips?

don't move to CT

Which town are you moving to and where are you coming from?

I'm in Lee, MA, and I spend a lot of time hiking and camping in the area. The AT section running from NW CT to Lee is a particularly nice section, though fairly high-traffic. If you're trying to get /out/, section hiking the AT will be the easiest way to get started. A lot of state forests and preserved lands in the area also have good hiking trails.

Torrington, from Miami

That's kind of a tough place these days, but you'll be under a half hour from the AT. If you like backpacking and camping, you won't be far away from it. CT and MA suck for gun laws though.

I just recently moved from Canton, right next to Torrington. The Kent area isn't too far away and there's a beautiful waterfall there. I didn't do a ton of hiking while there, which I regret. If you stop by Canton then the Farmington river is really nice to kayak on. The Audobon center in Sharon, CT is really beautiful as well. Heublein Tower in Simsbury is a nice hike tho I wish it was longer. There's probably a lot I'm forgetting but NW CT has a lot of natural beauty that people tend to forget when they talk about CT.

Sounds like theres a handful of ct anons, Farmington here
theres plenty of SMALL places to go out but not to many huge vast forests etc

Are any of the state forests worth checking out? I'll be near paugnut and mattatuck

I haven't been to either of those ones, but there are a lot of state forests in the area, both in CT and MA, and they're definitely worth checking out. Some of them have great trails, some not as much, but it's definitely worth exploring.

Catskills in NY are only a couple hours away and they're pretty good for short backpacking trips.

There are plenty of options for day hiking too... Pick up a CT Walkbook West to get started. Also look for web pages for towns land trusts. I've found a few nice trails that way.
