Where's somewhere to go in Northern US this/next week? Do national parks actually let you stay there or do you need to pay a fee/check in or something?

Holy fuck where is that?
Depends on the park.
Yellowstone is fucking packed.

Thinking somewhere I could go for a few days on my own without experience, so would need to be warm at night. Preferably somewhere less crowded

I believe op has found the Smurf's Lost Village.

Where i am (Northern VA) you can just plop down wherever in a national park, as long as its not already owned
Ignore national parks, go to national forests.
Maybe it's my imagination but I think the majority of NPs that I've been to either don't have dispersed camping or have strict requirements.
National forests on the other hand you just roll up wherever, double check the MVUM, and do whatever you want.

Where the fuck do you live?

National parks are picky about where you stay.

If you want to sleep indoors, you're not going to get very far from people. Sleeping in lodges in national parks is expensive as hell.
Mountains are still covered with snow. Many high roads are going to be closed and high trails are not going to be maintained. I hope you like snowshoeing.
