Anyone know a good way to carry one of these without stuffing it into a backpack?
Maybe a way to strap onto your back or put it on a cross-strap or something like how civil war soldiers used to carry their gear?

years ago i modified mine by taking the "thick" cushions out of the top and bottom center and replaced them with 50 mil thick plastic sheeting cut to the same dimensions.
what i lost in comfort i gained in packability by being able to roll it up and stash it away.
Run a cord through the handle and tie it to the outside of the pack

The reason i ask is i don't carry a pack. It's more like a small buttpack on a single shouder strap.

what is so bad about putting it up against your back panel?

What back panel do you speak of?

this would work along with the cross strap for your needs, i believe.
