What do you autists carry for defence innawoods? Let's face it, you're all alone out there, you need to have something that's capable of killing pretty much anything that may fuck with you.

I chose a big enough utility knife. I'm way too lazy/poorfag to buy a gun (Canada) and a Ka-Bar short is more than enough to put me on level footing with a black bear. Of course I have a small thing of mace, too.

well if im with a larger group in, lets say norways "fjeld" (mountains, i guess) a satelite phone? but even that is way over the top considering the cost and what it would actually help.

"defence" i would sat would be more feeling for if you are developing blisters, or when you need to take a break

I have full sized pic related in d2. I like the leather handles much better. I have never used it. Too big. The pilot's survival knife is much handier. Sold my 1095 version to a vertical engineer who was about to be deployed. He said his buddies made fun of it for the whole deployment.

since i'm a 6' tall male and the only predators in my area are easily-buffaloed black bears and mountain lions i don't need to carry anything heavier than my voice.
>>
>>976493
They don't
>>
>>976480
Throughout history, Black bears have killed way more people by trichinosis than by attacks. In Soviet Russia, you first eat bear, then he kill you.
>>
Every time I come across a bear on the trail I pull my camera out to try and get a good picture. Inevitably, when I start to approach, the bear will notice me and run off like a bitch.

Self defense while /out/ should only be a concern if there are other humans in the area. I bring a shotgun car camping. A handgun would prob be better for when I go backpacking, but sadly I'm a canacuck.

Bear spray if you're really worried about animals. A knife is silly.

Average American Caucasian is 5'11". Is your ego so large that it skews your perception so that feel that you are a bigger man for it?

I'm just fuckin wit cha. My state has two bears in the wild. I'd love to see one /out/.
>>
>>976643
I don't wanna be a bitch, but the leather sheath would make it worth it. The Elk hunter, I might do, but the sheath with rod is what drives your knife home as a bushcrafter.
>>
>>976655
What if I threw in the $30 so you could order one?
>>
>>976646
my state has a high proportion of mexicans, which draws the average down. it also has lots of black bears, and some retards are actually pushing to reintroduce grizzlies.

>>976642
that's a good looking knife.
>>
>>976662
I'd do it right now IRL, but I'm an impulse buyer. That's why I have so many unused knives. My hard on would go away during shipping.

I had to look at your knife's website, and I was pretty impressed. I've got a knife made from a crosscut saw blade in about the same pattern and thickness, which I actually use.

That K-bar was only $50 when I bought it in 2008. Didn't look to see what they go for now.

I'll take the treat seriously when the majority of people realize that, every single time they drive on a public road, they are putting themselves in harms way to a greater extent that most anything else they do in their entire lives. Lightening is a much bigger concern. The more metal objects you carry, the more it heightens the risk of being struck, which is far more common than bear attacks. Humans just have a genetically ingrained fear of being the prey, rather than the predator.

Have you seen the vid of the sloth bear eating the farmers face off? They shoot it to death with rifles over 10 mins of it eating a dude. Good luck. I wonder if you've ever been in a fight? Have you been punched in the face? If you have, maybe just maybe you can imagine that fist being 2-3 times as big with claws, attached to 600 lbs of fuck your shit up. Now imagine the bear charges you, you get a couple shots off, then it runs into you full speed swiping clawing and biting. Even if it only takes 30 seconds for the bear to die from your shots, that's plenty of time for it to fuck your shit up bad enough that you wont recover.

You should check with fish and game in Alaska, they'd greatly say other wise (Alaska likes to keep track of that sort of shit) Full grown grizzly and moose have been taken out with 9mm, 45. ACP and .44 and 10mm (Most pistol kills is done with the .45 acp and 10mm). A lot of those animals were charging too, not even from 50 feet away. I'm not talking about mag dumping either, only a shot or two was enough to kill it.

Funny how there is groups that study this shit (Fish and game, hunters, loads of others) they will post all data and proof of what they say. Yet instead of ppl reading this shit, they act like retards (Talking about you) they just end up talking out of their ass (Which you're doing)

Some rounds won't penetrate deep enough to hit vital organs like the heart and lungs (shooting from the front, nit side). 9mm ballpoint to the head, even if it did not penetrate, is still delivering a shit ton of kinetic energy, enough so that it can still kill it.

The biggest problem is people don't train with their shit. That and with the adrenaline that is rushing through you, it is very easy to miss at 5 yards (Look at police reports, there is plenty were some one shot 15 times at a target only 20 feet away, missed every shot)

In the end, you're a dumbass who doesn't know his shit, never bothering to learn his shit, will continue to be just that...which is shit. So plz, kill yourself faggot.

Except australia leads by a LARGE margin in rapes, burglaries, auto theft (Adjusted for population AND total number), drug use, total crime victims per 100k, assault, property crime, suicide rates, and all of this correlates DIRECTLY to when the australian government institutes harsher gun laws and gun buy backs. Harsher gun laws=higher crime rates.

One of the only stats where Australia wins is in gun crime, which makes sense since you cant own guns.

>>
>>982353
>>982338
Firearms are fucking heavy is my point, and you shouldn't carry one unless you abolutely have to. "always prepared" applies more to things like knives and ponchos and shit. You know, things that don't weigh that much. Things that aren't in the way when you're out and about.
>>
>>981446
Non-restricted? How much is it?
>>
>>982355
A 9mm handgun can weigh as little as 1.5 pounds loaded with 15 rounds. Thats less than a hatchet. A 10mm Glock 20 weighs less than 2 pounds loaded. A fully loaded 12 gauge shotgun is less than 7 pounds. Guns arent heavy, especially compared to the rest of your camping gear.

"Always prepared" Means always prepared for something that might happen, including being responsible for your own safety concerning people, or animals. What is dosent mean is make crap excuses why you dont want be responsible for your own safety in a life and death situation.
>>
>>982363

and even assuming that your claim is true, ca alone has 75,000,000 state park visitors per year, so your "thousands" nationwide is a small enough percentage it's not something i'm worried about. it's more dangerous to drive to the park than it is to hike in the park.

and becuase i'm not a hysterical exagerator about my bogeymen, my source for 75,000,000 annual visitors: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/795/files/14-15%20Statistical%20Report%20-%20INTERNET.pdf

A.) Source your own information, like a responsible citizen of the world
B.) saying a firearms wouldnt make a difference in the vast majority of cases isnt an argument, the same can be said of wearing a seatbelt when you drive, but they are required by law because when they are needed, they save lives.
>>982385
Ad Hominem: a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

b) nice false analogy. https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/seatbeltbrief/
and considering having a gun would make a difference in literally 0.0000% of the times people visit state parks, i'd say that's a valid argument.

When I used to survey I worked in remote areas in N. Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. Lots of helicopter work with a dicey sat phone as my only means of communication.

I carried a Buck 119 and bear spray. I had some close encounters but nothing too dangerous. If I carried a firearm I would have probably ended up killing a couple bears for what turned out to be no reason.

People who fret about being killed by Bad Hombres and fantasize about what they would do should put half that energy and thought into their lifestyle.

Chances are, you aren't going to die from a bear or Bad Hombre. But you will probably die from cancer, heart disease, complications due to hypertension, diabetes, etc.

If you want to life longer, avoid premature death, and, more importantly, have a better quality of life as you get older... you should go to the gym and eat properly.

But no, it's more exciting and fun to amass firearms and prepare for that home invasion, which will prove all the naysayers and people who called you a nut wrong.

stainless steel is probably the best overall especially for a knife that will see little use and will be kept in storage a lot.

the carbon steel meme is overrated. you will not use a flint on your knife to make fire and a good sharpener will not give two fucks about the hardness so field maintenance is not an issue either.
>>
>>989062

The carbon steel "meme" is about how well it takes an edge (sharpen fast) and holds it (sharpen less often).

That said, there are many grades of stainless steel purpose-made for knives that can do everything that carbon steel can do, and not rust on top of it. They just cost more.

North Georgia is much better for /out/ stuff I think. Just driving across the state many time, further north in the state and you still get a bit of the Smokey Mountains and nice dense woods while still being within 90min of downtown ATL. Southern part of the state is more rolling hills and kinda boring.
>>
>>989119
Yea that sounds awesome, I might have to go on a trip to Georgia whenever I can.
Camping in the Smokey Mountains must be nice as fuck. Any ideas if there are some good national parks?
Also as far as I know gun laws are pretty good so I might be able to take something with me.
>>
Anyone have the Condor Bushlore? I was thinking about grabbing one since they are cheap and I like the shape of it. Seems like it has mostly positive reviews.

on a budget it doesn't really look like it can be beat. What turns me off most about budget knives is the shitty sheath they toss in but considering for less than $50 you're getting a decent knife with a leather sheath, you can't really go wrong.

live in North FL, which is basically pine forest which are also somehow swamps that are filled with underbrush and are ridiculously flat. So the rolling hills of south georgia are much better, but ive been in north georgia, and thats some cool shit, I was hiking on a trail and i was literally tripping over busted up pink and clear quartz just coming out of the ground.

OC is a nonissue in georgia right? especially while camping I think
>>
>>989051

If you can't body slam a bear into submission, then you have no right to go /out/
>>
>>992038
How was hiking in GA?
>>
It's funny to me Americans are so scared of the woods that they imagine rabid zombie-like methheads will come charging out of the bushes where they apparently live (because the forest is the biggest source of meth)
>>
If you can't defend yourself with a Mora Companion against anything you come across, you don't belong /out/

Masters of /out/ only need a Mora Basic, though

Better than it is in FL. Better climate, hilly or slightly mountainous the further north you go so you actually can have sightlines. Ive only been /out/ in fl and georgia, its easier to fine a creek or freshwater spring in fl, but i enjoy georgia much more.
>>

They cook it in the woods because of strong smell. A couple of redneck meth heads kidnapped a young couple who were watching a meteor shower in the NF last summer. They beat the dude to death with a claw hammer. They killed the chick by sticking a garden hose up her ass and running it full blast and watching her bloat.
>>
>>992210
I mean in america you have drug addicts and rednecks who will so shit like >>992336 decribed. In europe all you have to worry about is arabs raping your children and getting literally zero jailtime for it, if they are even arrested.

>>
>>992306
I am really tempted to go to GA in a year or so. I would totally fucking do it. It's probably cheap also, gas to get there is probably the most expensive.

Were there any nice national parks or whatever?
Also need to do a bit of research on gun laws.

If you meet a bear with a Kabar you'd be lucky to come out with severe lacerations. It's way too short for a self defense knife against a bear with decent reach. I would buy a very long dagger or bowie, like a 10 inch one, such as a svord von Tempsky, a cold steel Laredo or Natchez bowie, a cold steel 1917 frontier, a cold steel magnum warcraft tanto. Any of these. A gun is always best tho.
