Question, any idea what sort of wasp this is? It was bigger then most wasps I've seen around here, found it under a rock attempting to keep warm, it was about 2 inches long.

Probably a sand hornet. They come in all sorts of marking styles.

I think a lot of people would call it a "yellowjacket," but that's probably a common name used for many different similar looking species. Identifying insects can come down to microscopic nuance, like the size and character of the bristles on their antennae.
pretty sure...Japanese wasp. yellow jackets are little tiny bees. it really looks like a yellow jacket moved in with a Japanese wasp.

This time of year it could be a queen on her nuptial flight looking to start a colony. I'm not 100% sure though, just a thought.
