Does anyone have experience camping with one of these instead of a backpack? Ive noticed that I dont need a whole bunch to sustain myself outdoors so im trying to go the minimalist rout.
>>966311
Obviously I dont go camping with grenades but the idea of the load bearing harness is the main idea
>>966311
Should have the butt pack thing on it. Good for Nam themed airsoft.
>>966317
Definitely. Ideally, thats what my tent would be housed in. In case of rain
>>966315
Grenade fishing! That's how Jesus did it.
>>966319
Needs K-bar or Gerber MkII upside down on harness front.
Or you could just bring a smaller backpack?
>>966311
Compass pouch needs mp3 player with Paint It Black, and The End on loop.
>>966319
Damn i totally want this
>>966311
Gotta add this.

I havent really found a small backpack that allows easy accessibility of all that I brought. Smaller backpacks that ive looked at are one main compartment and maybe a couple other small pouches maybe. Something like this might keep all my things orderly and easily retrievable is what im assuming

I llike mine better

It's a solid idea. everything is low and snug around the hips for mechanical efficiency, and back is uncovered for better flexibility/more natural stride and won't be so hot in warm weather.
with small shelters, especially floorless ones, I could see them being packed in nicely. a big poncho could double as raingear and shelter.
a thermarest neoair xlite packs down to the size of a big soda can, so that provides ground insulation
how about the sleeping bag? this is what I'm struggling with most. even a small montbell bag or enlightened equipment quilt will take up a few L when compressed
>>966361
Before or after you've dug your poop hole?
>>966362
Thank you for not meming and actually contributing. Mostly everything you listed was exactly my thinking. Where I camp, it gets crazy hot. So hot that a shirt isnt even an option so having a backpack on my back world be more like a sponge. The poncho tent was exactly my plan as well. Granted, its not a fool proof plan as I may have to leave things I enjoy having but dont need like a sleeping mat

>army playing boys
I've thought about this, but I think I like the idea of a small pack better.
Having everything together and out of the way while I'm moving just seems better to me.
YMMV
>>966319
No need for a tent, Son. Your Nam era poncho has grommets all around. Just cut a few sticks for stakes. Then paracord between two trees or cut two more sticks to hold'er up.
>>966378
This is what I had planned. Not the nam one though. I actually made my own but to each their own. Im even sure I can get buy without a tent if the weather cooperates

Baptism by fire sterilizes the soul, my boy.
>>966361
Ok i'm sold. Scrapping mine now
>>966361
no fucking way in hell im letting food touch my shovel, even if it was brand new the paint would still be a concern
>>966391
Good. C-rat cans don't have that much lead anyway. Now you're thinkin' like a soldier.
>>966311
I tried this once. It was horrible. Good luck.
>>966344
You could get the same from an ALICE pack with a simple mod or just stuff sacks. The belt and suspenders, by and large, is dead weight.
>>966418
Ammo and water are heavy.
>>966414
Why though?
>>966399
leads good for you. makes you heavier, makers you hit harder, like the Romans
dont you want to be strong the like romans?
>>966418
My problem is I like having my things separate. I dont like throwing everything in a bag and having to dig through my stuff to get something. Would you happen to have a link to this mod you talk about? Ive got a full alice pack and I dont think it can do what you say but Id enjoy being proved wrong
>>966360
>implying military men aren't basically large, deadly children
>>966378
Am I the only one ever concerned about animals getting into shelters like that?
>>966528
Yeah. A full tent helps with bugs, and maybe snakes. Anything else that wants to get in will. It's not real comfy. It's minimalistic. One piece of gear serves several functions, instead of gear that requires more gear to serve a single function.
Never tried it for camping but hiking I like it for front pouches for camera.
it does somewhat rub your hip bone when climbing. Keeps back cool but doesn't hug the body very tight so if you run it will jiggle. Because the yoke linking the shoulder pads to the belt is soft and doesn't resist compression, you will feel more jerking when the weight transition from the belt to the shoulders. Which is why I do think >>966418 is a better option because of rigid frame, but I really need those front pouches for that camera and stuff.
If you want a small pack with compartments, try the Kelty Redwing packs.
The smallest is 32L, and has 2 side pockets, a front pocket, and a lid pocket. It's also a top/panel load hybrid design, so you can get gear in and out easy.
They're also pretty cheap.
H harness or webbing has all the stuff you would use during the day out on patrol. Your main pack (65litre) has spare set of clothes, sleeping bag, toiletries, extra rations etc. If you are on a short day patrol, main pack stays at platoon location. If you are on extended patrol and have enemy contact, drop main pack and you can still fight through with all the gear in your webbing. Do you even field craft?
>>966528
the only animals that bother me when camping are mosquitoes.
In that case you must have a full tent or you're sleeping with a bunch of shirts covering your face. And you lie there praying for death as those little blood suckers wake you throughout the night as they buzz nearby landing and trying to stab you through thick cloth barrier.
>>966356
It's utter garbage. Bought one for testing. It literally fell apart after 4 minutes of clearing ice from stairs.
>>966311
I carried this garbage in basic training. Utterly worthless for anything beyond wager, compass, and what fits in the ammo pouch.
Its just a pistol belt with a harness and everything secures to the belt with clips.
A molle vest is superior because of the ability to customize what pouches you use and where you place them. Still limited though, better off with a small bag or assault pack.
>>966340
Cool link, thanks!
If you are going to get it, remember to buy two canteens because a single one on the side makes it very unbalanced. Unless you bring a handgun in the holster on the other side, of course, but even then the balance will soon go to shit as you drink the water.
These canteens are 900ml-1liter so having two is easier to manage the water with. Also, don't get the ones without the pan thing (dunno the name in english) because they are actually a very decent substitute to pans so you will be cooking dinner there. If your water depository is not collapsible, there is literally zero reasons to bring any pan, cup or similar.
>>967147
Also, don't trust any cover that isn't like pic related, where you need to pass the belt inside it. Other kinds have a risk to fall down. Happened to me.
>>967147
thats not going to unbalance you retard
>>967255
There are many wood handled etools that are better. I agree with you for the most part. Troops in Nam hated them. I've broken one hacking at some hard clay in the 45° position. They do stow and carry well. This ability sometimes makes a difference in the decision whether or not carry a digging tool.
For the last two years, I've carried an overpriced E-tool made by Glock. It's muli-positional, has a telescoping polymer handle, and an integral root saw attachment. It's lighter than the trifold, and packs down slightly smaller. The handle feels like it should break at times, but it doesn't. I'm happy with it, but if it doesn't last me another 8 years, then it's not worth the price.
>>966311
They made a canvas blanket roll holder in the 50s that should be able to adapt to this LBV. Much handier than the buttpack for rolled items. I will try to find a link.

Let me just blow your mind: outdoorsmanship pre-dates organized militaries.
Armies are playing /out/.
Used a setup like this for a while, without the suspenders though. So basically just a belt with lots of Molle pouches on it.
It distributes weight well and is pretty comfortable to carry but will catch everywhere once you enter brushy or rocky terrain since it's a lot wider than your waist usually is. Wouldn't recommend it for bushcrafting, but if you stay on the blacktops and wood highways it's enough.
A small bag with a wide strap (haversack, assault pack) is far more comfortable and what I use atm, with only canteen and gun on my belt.
>>966344
So as I Alice buttpack lover, the discontinued Camelbak Bandito and the Wingnut Hyper line are less LARPy version of the idea, but a bit less modular
>>971456
I wish it didn't look like homosexual fish net fetish wear though.
>>966311
huh. now those canvas belts with the holes that poor people buy from walmart make more sense
>>966379
how did you make one? the actual military ones are surprisingly hard to find. most ponchos i find online are shitty chinese ones
