Are these any good at all? Not planning any hard use, just something to toss in my car in case I go off the road.
>>958421
no. don't buy that.
An Old Hickory kitchen knife form Wal-Mart for the same price would be much better.
>>958421
Theyre fun to play with
>>958421
For a $9 fixed blade knife absolutely not. That thing will break cutting butter. It's worth it to invest a little money in a decent knife. If you take care of it, it will last a lifetime, but cheap pieces of shit like that are likely to break and seriously injure you.
>>958421
You can even baton with this. Sharpen with a basted cut mill file. Will last years. $8.99 @ walmart.

No.
Why the fuck would you even consider one when you can buy a mora 511 for $10?
>>958436
Is that the same Ontario as pic related?
Just proves that these things cost nothing to make, it's all name and reputation and warranty.
>>958421
You are better off giving going up to random strangers and asking if you can buy a $10 knife from them.
A Mora Companion is only like $14 on Amazon... If your going supper cheap, get a Mora. Better yet, if it's going to stay in your car, get a 18" machete.
>>958477
What... are you looking at the same pic. It's obviously not the same knife.
>>958477
Old Hickorys are hot rolled high carbon. Not sure of the exact steel used, but it sharpens up really well with just about any method. It's not sold as an /out/ knife, but it's American made, and can compete with anything in the 6-8 inch full tang class. They make all kinds of blade configurations. Cheap enough to mod into whatever you want. Have to make your own sheath.
>>958477
its the same company yes
>>958675
and to continue about your pricing point, old hickory is traditionally punched from lumber saw steel. the steel is made for tensile strength etc, not for being a knife. ontarios other knives are built under diff parameters, treatment etc. though yes i would say there are definitely inexpensive knife options out there. ontario themselves have some famous ones, namely the 499, which is sadly a partial tang, because otherwise its an excellent deal. schrade are making excellent knifes for cheap too
>>958477
Same Ontario.
The difference is one is stamped out of a piece of steel with no grinding involved, no sheath, zero fit and finish, no coating, and a hande made from a roughly sawn block of wood. Its also produced in much higher numbers.
The only similarity is between the RAT series and the Old Hickory is the steel composition.
Didn't see a general knife thread, so I'm gonna hijack real quick.
If I want to do some small game hunting and fishing to offset my food supply, is it worth having a dedicated butchering/filet knife in my pack and a general use knife on my belt.
Or should I have one knife for doing everything? If so, recommendations?
>>958766
All the knife forums say O.H. is made of 1095. Ontario's website doesn't say.
>>958774
One knife is fine. I usually take a half dozen when I go though. Just to test them out IRL.
>>958421
Why do you need a knife if you go off the road?
How is it going to help you get back on the road?
>>958421
>not using a coupon to get it for $4.99
what is wrong with you
>>958911
>help you get back on the road
Sometimes getting back on the road isn't the goal.
>>958989
>Oh no! I went off the road!
>Guess I better wander into the backcountry and build a bushcraft shelter instead of trying to get my car back on the road
and then the trolls came...
>>958421
if your car is off road and you're in a stressful situations, it's even more likely that you'll expose it to "hard use"
>>958994
Or you might use the knife to build a winch.
>>958903
you forgot your tripcode
>>959094
Wut
>>959077
But anon said getting back on the road isn't the goal.
Also what's your favorite way to build a winch with a dime store Rambo knife?
>>959537
Blyatwinch

Was given as gag gift between hunters
Killed back bear in fight for survival
But anyway, just get a mora

>inna back country
>car goes off road in hard snow
>wait 3 hours for tow
>tale 20 minutes to hack some branches off a pine tree and place them under tire to gain traction
troll harder, city boy
>>958421
lol you can put fucking fish hooks and shit inside your knife.
>>958421
Grind the tip off.
>>961211
But if you've got a car you have room for an axe or a saw, which is what an intelligent person would keep in their trunk for such emergencies. Not a cheap novelty knife.
Try again suburban "country boy".
>>958430
Where do you live where your local Walmart sells old hickory styled knives?
SE
>>962287
If your local walleyworld doesn't stock'em, you can order the $8.99 7" butcher off their website, and pick it up at the store without shipping charges.
>>958421
Op, fuck yeah, those snips are just fine!
The knife? Well worth $5 w/coupon. Well worth $5 to throw inna trunk.
Also, the Old Hickory suggestion is excellent.
The only bigger SNOBS ON THE PLANET than these knife fags assholes are benchrest shooters!
>>962621
Benchrest guy here. Yeah, we are some anal retentive motherfuckers for sure.
>>962642
It's understandable, but I find the Class III guys are really nice, which you might not expect?
I'm a Highpower guy, so in between maybe?
>>962646
As in Browning 9mm or Barrett .50BMG?
