Where do casual campers shop for gear?

While I don't plan on actually backpacking anytime soon, I still need a tent and sleeping bags for the gf and I when we check out the local national parks over spring break.

Is Goodwill and/or the Salvation Army a popular choice or should I shell out the cash on Amazon for new equipment?

I occasionally get things from the local army disposals, got a decent backpack there that's lasted about 9 years and still in good order. Used to get other camping gear from Anaconda before they turned into an outdoor clothing shop for yuppies.

Pretty much this.

My hammocks came from woot.
Sleeping bag from overstock
Sleep pad found on the river at a campsite
Headlamp from black diamond on clearance

Check your local Craigslist for backpacks or a tent or the like. A lot of people buy these things and rarely or never use them.

this plus your local sporting goods store or big box store. if you are going camping within distance of your car you don't need any expensive stuff at all, since the main things you pay more money for like performance, durability, or reduced weight wont be needed for you. You should be able to get enough stuff for two for $100 or under.

+1
so many people buy super expensive gear they use once. god bless the salesmen and saleswomen who upsell to yuppies out for a once a decade camping trip.
