Nobody lives out there because there aren't enough resources to make living out there worthwhile. Especially water.

The distances are vast, farming and ranching in that environment is difficult, and the communities are slowly dying due to lack of opportunity for young people.

Most places in the stretch from the western Dakotas down through Oklahoma peaked in population between 80 and 130 goddamn years ago and have been in decline ever since. The entire economy out there revolves around farming and it's too hard for small single-family farms to produce a profit, especially with the Oglalla Aquifer running dry.

Ghost towns exist for a reason. People tried to live there and just couldn't hack it.

The overwhelming trend for the past century has been for people to move to the cities. If we're smart about making the cities denser as they grow instead of sprawling them out the way we are now, then those empty spots on the map are going to get even emptier as the years go by.

Could be a very good thing for those of us who go out.
