Magnet Fishing Thread

Any experiences with this? I just bought a neodymium magnet off eBay and I'm looking for advice
>>
>>939186
Any time you handle it, wear safety glasses. Learn to keep it away from everything that is metal.

Use a bag over it to prevent metal dust and shavings from clinging to it. If they do and you touch them, they tend to stab through your skin. Don't ever get yourself between the magnet and anything metal. Ever.
>>
>>939186
You actually found a gayer hobby than metal detecting.
Impressive.
>>
>>939186
I found some keys and some bolts. Only went once though. It was fun.
>>
>>939186
"It belongs in a museum!"
>>
Once lost a fishing rod and reel. Took a rake on a rope to try to get it back. Lost the rake and rope. Large magnet on rope got my rake, rod and reel and a lot of other stuff. Now I always take a magnet and rope for fun.
>>
How much are the electro-magnets, with off switches? I wouldn't feel safe with a 5lb neodymium magnet around me that couldn't be turned off...
>>
>>939241
A metal detector broke your heart it's okay

You can diy one pretty easily using a large transformer and a battery. Just remove one of the windings on the transformer and expose the core. Even a small one can be pretty powerful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzXRFp0DDrU

Just remember that those wires for the coils are coated in a very thin enamel. It needs to be protected from scratches (unlike the video above). One scratch can short them out. Use fingernail polish or epoxy to help fix scratches. You'd also need to make a water proof container for it. The one in the video above is the best you can use in reference to how its primary and secondary coils are put on. Some transformers have the primary and secondary coils wrapped on on top of the other making it a little more difficult to get them apart. Always use the coil that has the larger wire for a electromagnet.

You can also use your own magnet wire to make your own coil for use with an old transformer,

http://www.instructables.com/id/Strong-Electromagnet-From-An-Old-Transformer/?ALLSTEPS

Remember, the more amps used the stronger the magnet. The more wraps of wire the stronger the magnet. The closer the wraps are to the metal you wrap it around the stronger the magnet. Thicker wire allows more amps, but smaller wire allows more wraps. Thus, there's a balance between everything for optimal performance.

Even a tiny battery will give you lots of power,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGoOu8cPmeM

If you used a car battery, I'd recommend some sort of resistor so to prevent the wires from burning out. Just use a resistor that allows x amount of watts like a 12-volt incandescent light bulb in whatever wattage would make a weak electromagnet. More watts for the resistor means more power for the electromagnet. Even a tiny transformer can make a seriously powerful electromagnet. The MOTs in the vids could make one that lifts 100s of pounds easily.

Why ?

How does the magnet attract fish?

You use them when fishing waterways that are polluted with lots of heavy metals. Since the biggest fish often have the highest concentration of heavy metals, the magnets work great for landing lunkers.
>>
>>939520
Maybe he doesn't want to attract robots
>>
>>939520
Because they can harm you greatly. You can lose fingers, eyes, and hands with ones that large.

>>
>>939534
It's not strictly the biggest fish, it's the oldest fish. Biomagnification really works over time. A 7 lb walleye that is 10 years old will have more than a 20lb salmon that is 3-4 years old.

Look into getting an old MRI machine, best way to get a low budget very powerful magnet, you can do MRIs with it to pay it off. I advertise on craigslist and do them on the weekend for $400 for people with no insurance, need to do it off peak hours or the electricity is too expensive.

>>939596
Damn. I bet you could get some big fish if you hook up that thing behind your boat.
>>
>>939568
That is only relevant when comparing individuals in the same species. A naturally fed, 10yo, rainbow trout will always have less pollution than a naturally fed 1 year old shark.
>>
>>939568
Biomagnification has to do with toxins working there way up the food chain
Bioaccumulation describes the build up in individual organisms over time
Both these processes are at work
>>
>>939643
That is exactly what was stated.
>>
>>939186
This looks really neat. How much does one of those magnets cost?

>>

>>

I don't get what your deal is. If I want to dredge waterways for magnetic metal what's it to you?
>>
>>940523
Op here, I totally agree bro at the end of the day a free wrench is a free wrench. I got mine off eBay I just searched for a eye bolt fishing magnet, you're best off going for something with at least a 60kg pull strength and some kind of rope, I use either nylon rope or 550 paracord.
>>

Seen some videos on YT of guys doing this.
If you have any areas of historical significance nearby like a ww2 battlefield or something, chance are you could find some historical relics.
Some guy down south finds old cavalry sabres and rifles in creeks and ponds near the sites of civil war era battles and skirmishes

eh, OP i'm not sure you've thought this through all the way
>>
>>942318
How the hell is any of that shit worth anything if it has been buried under a creek for 150yrs?

I remember some History Channel show like that a few years back. Guys go around with metal detectors and find some old belt buckle and say "Oi! This is worth $950!" and you can barely fucking tell what it is beyond a pile of mud and rust.
>>
>>942320
some of it, depending on silt content and water salinity, is surprisingly not in that bad of shape.
mostly its worth more as an historic relic than actual monetary value.

For the guys that do it, its mostly just the fun of finding something cool and the nostalgia of knowing the last person to touch it was a soldier from 200 years ago, or whatever.

for most its just a hobby. don't try to place finite value on another person hobby interest. people enjoy different things. deal with it

Of If the threads still up Wednesday next week I'll post my first time magnet fishing trip results. Ordered two 250lbs pull magnets off Amazon last night.
I plan on targeting some old gameland ponds that are right off the road, maybe find some tossed murder weapons lol.
I also plan on heading down to a major lake to try under the High way bridges that span the lake.

thats the problem if people get metal near these machines the only way to get something out of the machine again is to let the helium out and these machines have 10tousands worth of helium inside
they have to release all of it so the magnets get warm and stop being superconductors

Woops sorry thread, not op btw friendo.
Went out to a boat launch, got at least 15 bungee cords and some assorted tools. Hooks and a few rusty jigs also, not much to talk about. Didn't go to the gameland ponds, they are a bit further out and it's been a high of 40 the past few days and windy as fuck so that rope is cold as fuck.

I'm camping/ last trapping run this weekend, I'll see if I have time to toss the magnet out.

Again sorry for not posting sooner, I think only 4 anons are in here anyway.
>>
>>939186
I screw around with magnets when I go canoeing and actual fish aren't biting. If you're not using an electro, don't use too strong of a magnet. If you hook a bunch of rebar, large car parts and such, it can be nearly impossible to retrieve the magnet without swamping the boat. Most of the crap I find is rusted beyond recognition. Trying to figure out what it was can be fun. About the coolest stuff I find regularly on the river is intact cans of food. I have a half dozen unopened and have no idea what's in them. I opened one that looked like a can of Spam, and that's exactly what it was. Don't know how old it was; half rusted, half shiny. I ate it. No scaling, gutting or cooking necessary. Providence.

Nothing in the traps, but I knew I wasn't catching anything because 1 night isn't long enough.
I know damn well I had one of those rounde- flat botomed anchors attached, but I hung it up on some rocks about 7 feet from the docks. Pulled so hard I thought the rope shaped, but it was just the magnet detaching. Stronk ass magnet.

I mad. Need a boat to get above it next time.

Oh and I also snagged a shitton of bolts and hooks, best thing was a craftsman adjustable wrench, no rust thanks to good old craftsman...craftsmanship.
