How you liking the skrama? Might pick one up, would be nice with a chopper not the size om a machete.
Thinking about getting this one
Am I a queer?
>>937534
It really is unique.
The steel is also uncommon (80crV2) Very flexible while keeping and taking an edge well.
It chops good, the steeper edge for carving also bites in.
The longer handle does what it's intended to and is comfy.
I regret buying one with the sheath because, it reaches down to my knee when worn. (I'm 6,4 ft tall) I don't dare to walk on trail wearing a literal short sword.
I mostly pull it out of my bag and leave it on my chopping surface.
>Life Hack #83
Sharpen you're knife and start fires at the same time!
>>937562
if you're going to get it do some research first. there was a construction issue with the sheath that caused the knife to go dull just from putting it in or taking it bac out. i dont know if that has been fixed by now though
>>937687
...by batoning your ferro rod.
smol anime knife
>>937692
So you stick the ferro rod in the wood, and then strike the ferro rod with the sharp edge of the knife?
Makes sense
THE KNIFE GOD DEMANDS MORE KNIVES
>>937690
I also have the option of getting the older model with the kydex sheath, but it has the double guard.
The blunting may be due to the sheath material being abrasive, which I doubt Etrema Ratio would fix.
SHIT I really liked it for the mountain. It's very aesthetic AND comfortable.

>>937738
I kinda like those until those scales inevitably fall off. Looks like some rubber glued on there. I hope it is affixed in a better way because I just saw the price ($250-$265).
>>937742
It's probably g10 and glued with some special snowflake resin
I wouldnt worry about it at all. Some of the strongest scale adhesives are resins, better than screws etc...

I have that, fucking good knife. Skinned and cleaned 4 deer in a row before it needed a light sharpening. Holds it's edge and fits my hand. The groves cut into the back make it so my thumb stays put which I like.
10/10 imo.

i just buy folders. ive got a a bunch but my daily carry is always a kershaw blur. spyderco tenacious is always a good bet if you are on a budget too.
>>938557
folders are for pussies bro, mend your ways
I'm in Japan and have access to local, traditional smithies.
What's the best knife design to get? I've been thinking of buying a nata.
>>938561
:(
I'm not that dude, but I'm technically not allowed to have weapons on the job, so I can only get away with a pocketed folder.
My Schrade works great for me because the stone washed finish is less conspicuous, I can open and close it easily with one hand, and the flipper doubles as a guard because I am clumsy as hell.
>>938575
It was a joke bro. Nice knife but it triggers me that it doesn't have a lanyard. But it's just my opinion, and that's your knife.
>>938575
I keep a lanyard on my fixed blade, but I need to keep a low profile at work. They give me dog mace, but there's no way I'm only carrying that.

Powerline inspector, I essentially get paid to hike and look at trees. Wild pigs and angry dogs are pretty common, but I got followed by a mountain lion for two days once and I've been paranoid ever since.
Anyone knowledgeable about Japanese pocket knife shapes?
I'll be in Japan in a couple of months and figure I might buy one when I'm there. Ideally something handmade and/or antique.
Pic related seems to be a traditional shape.
>>939078
ooo check you out, im a powerline designer. id rather have your gig...you out west?
>>938138
That snap button looks like it would dull the blade on the draw, could be wrong though
muh knives, not really sure what to look into next, the glock knife perhaps, or the EKA swingblade or maybe try a spyderco, how are they for /out/?
>>939629
Look at the Svoord Farmer's knife.
>>939629
that's a pretty decent selection
no opinels which is a plus
>>939629
What is the small pukko on the left?
>>939660
actually have to opinels, one super tiny one i bought in val d'isere years ago and one of those newer ones with the painted handle, but it lives in my trangia set and is only for food, just forgot to include them in the picture, also have a leatherman crater that i forgot about
>>939702
the small one? Brusletto Balder
>>939655
hmm, looks like the butchers knife my granddad had, never really get used to using that blade shape, id definitely pick up a similar shaped knife at a flea market for a fraction of the cost before venturing into that blade shape again, come to think of it i think i have the blade of a similar shape where the plastic handle broke off, could do something with that i guess
>>939785
glad I can use the diamond sharpener in the handle to sharpen my knife

>>940599
Yeah, the blade on the Karesuando bent sideways. I don't know if it was like that when I bought it or not but I only noticed it after I had used it (for regular, non abusive use of course). I'm going to return it and get another one but I don't know which one to get. Probably the Hare I think its called.

You seem to come from Denmark.
Try to get your money back and invest it here:

Just buy a piece of birch from the same shop for 6€ and make the knife yourself, saving 100 bucks.
You can also get a copper plate for the looks. Every two component glue will keep your blade in the handle. Did this for a friend and he still uses it after 2 years.

on a scale of 1 to 2 billion, how much do those GEC's suck? i bet they have so much blade play
>>941722
Well the #47 is actually awesome 10% of the time, piss poor 90% of the time. I use it sort of as an exacto blade for certain work or for very specific things like cutting up fruit. It sucks at most things but what it does do, it does better than any other knife I've ever used. It has no blade play whatsoever. Absolutely solid.
However, the #14 does have a little bit of blade play. Its not 2 billion like the blade is spinning by itself somewhere out in space but its probably a 1 on a scale form 1 to 10. Its so small and has such a tiny hinge pin that it just can't stand up to anything really. I even have to be careful sharpening it for fear of pressing to hard on the blade. For this reason I just don't use it. Its so damn beautiful and I know I'll never be able to get another one that I just put in a box and leave it alone. If I used it regularly, it would develop so much blade play it would be tossed in the garbage after a few months.
Why so much hate for GEC? I think they're really high quality but you have to keep in mind the intended use of the knife.
Did you buy a lockback that sucked? GEC is known to have subpar locking knives. Their slipjoints are as good as slipjoints come. This is why all the good slipjoints are immediately bought up as soon as the next production run is finished but the lockbacks tend to stick around.
My taste in knives has changed since I bought these anyway. I no longer care about the tiny details that make a knife more refined and perfected but make it cost 3 times as much.
Ooh this ended up pretty long. I could talk about knives for a long time.

I looked them up and apparently they're called "fruit sampling" knives.
Which makes sense cause the blades are longer than most fruit is wide.
My grandfather recently died and he gave these to me a few days prior, that's why I have them. He was in the food industry.
They were both made in Solingen, Germany. And are much sturdier than the look.

I sent back a few orders because they kept sending me faulty folders then they refused to take any of my orders because apparently my standards are much higher than everyone else's and impossible to meet because I don't like my folding knife blades to scrape against the liners or have massive un-fixable blade play
>>938138
I have the skrama and its amazing. I would love to get one of their puukkos
>>942399
i think there are companies that specialize in "remaking" knives, alfie had it done to his KA-BAR
>>940045
that blafjell tho. Love it
>>942718
Alfie didn't have his remade, it was ground down and the edge refined with a mirror finish. Even the handle scales are custom created. The guy at Doberman Knives even did a break down of what he did for the blade on his YouTube channel and said he wouldn't be doing anything like it again. I actually like his set up more than the standard BK7. But I'm superbly bad about liking what other have.
>>942762
Not the same guy but I agree with you about preferring it to the normal bk7. I'm not an envious person but I have massive knife envy
>>937464
I post to please the God
>>942800
Why o people take the coating off their bk7s? Surely it's much more practical to keep it on, and then if you wanted to expose the top for ferro-rod striking you could just remove the coating at just the top. Or is it purely aesthetic?
>>942802
You nailed it with the ferrorod bit, and I do indeed think it's more aesthetic without the coating. It takes a bit more care but I like it. It's also just that much easier to find if I drop or misplace it while /out/.
>>942713
I have an ESEE with a questionable grind.
Reading your post makes me think they sent me that one on purpose so I could fuck off with it
Hmmm
>>942720
Regretful buy. I bought it on impulse and I'm trying to sell it. Its just too big for me but anyway, there are better knives for the money. The sheath sucks. It doesn't hold the knife. If you try to use it, its pretty well guaranteed the knife will fall out and you'll lose it. The handle is also shaped so strangely. Its super thick around the middle/end but really narrow at the top near the blade.
>>941278
I'm actually Canadian but I got the knife while in Sweden visiting family.
I emailed them and they do have a 10 year guarantee and they said that I could send it in and choose any knife I want except the Damascus blades of course. The issue is that international shipping will probably cost a lot. The other thing is that each one is different and its best to choose hand made knives in person so you get the one you like.
I have been thinking about making my own actually but if I do, I'd probably just do it with a Mora blade because the first one I do might not be great.
>>942802
I do prefer the look without the black coating. I'm just not in to all black blades. A little TLC will remove the need for the blades coating. But if you're not going to care for and oil your blades it's a bad idea.
>>942036
From what I understand quality on Barlow went down severely back in the late 80's/early 90's and I got mine around 97-98. My friends Dad sold them out of his store and gave me one and was talking about how cheap they had become. If you have one from that long ago, you've got a good one. Anything within the last 30 years isn't living up to the name anymore.
>>942802
The coating on the BK 7 is kinda that of sand paper. Once you take that coating off, it can slice, baton, all that shit much easier, cause that grainy grips onot the wood fibers. Plus after using it a bit, the shit is all scratched and kinda worn, so easier to just take the finish off the blade.
Britbong here, looking at a leatherman micra, opinions?
>>943693
Grainy finish grips*
Plus it makes it easier to clean too. Sap easy sticks onto the finish much more too.
>>943513
Uh... thanks? Didn't really bother me.
>>943693
Truth be told, there isn't a single thing I like about the BK7 except the blade thickness and shape. The finish, sheath, handle scales, and coating are crap. Replacements are extremely expensive but totally worth it.
>>939525
no idea but fuck that thing looks cool
>>943348
Did some more research, I guess it's not from the 30's, just the 50s-60s. Mine has the bottom right stamp on it. Still breddy based, sharpens up like a razor and less blade play than 3 year old benchmade
>>939525
yeah. its a higo no kami but that one isn't the traditional ones. they have steel or brass bodies and are a type of laminated steel. they're dirt cheap and i carry one around as my edc. i use it for most eerything but prying and drilling/stabbing. its sharp as dick but the tip will snap as its meant to cut and shit. if you do happen to break the tip, its easy as shit to re-profile like i did mine, will post pics later. again, they're pretty fuckin cheap too. just be conscious of the fact that, like allot of old knives, they do not lock.
>>945236
Pic related, just some folders I have.
>>945236
Also the tip I reshaped is the one with the cord on it. It's good enough for me.

the higo no kami actually beat the opinel in terms of carving wood- the opinel edge rolled a little while i was making a notch to hang a pot
