Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just a trout one.

The smell of salt in the air.

That slightly sticky feeling.

The constant breeze tickling ever hair.

The warm sun recharging your soul.

The every so often sting of sand hitting skin.

I love the smell of fish, the sight/smell/sound of open water, and especially cow patties and churned soil as it reminds me of my childhood spent fishing mostly farm ponds.

sunfish smell like pond algae.
stripers smell like lavender and lychee
tuna smell like blood

half a bag of anchovies left in your cooler for a week and a half smells like hell.

Plus, you can always use a swivel at the start of the leader instead of near or on the snap.

>>933225
I don't use those for plugs and such. I use the triangle quick snaps I make. Those old style brass snaps, with the painted on eye, are only used for catching baitfish.
>>
So I bought a 7' cast net to use on the boat for catching shad and other bait fish but my boat doesn't have any live well. Do any of you guys have experience with / recommendations for any of those insulated buckets + aerators?

Just remember cold water holds more oxygen than warm water. If you just want to keep em alive for a couple hours a foam bucket with an aerator should be fine. Otherwise they make the buckets and baskets that you hang off a rope or chain but idk how well that would do if you are cruising around at higher speeds since I mostly see those hanging off docks.

Those baskets are actually nice tho whether using em for bait or a livewell. I remember using a bigger one at my friend's place on the river when I was younger and we would just dump all our walleye and bluegill and crappie in there until the end of the day when we threw them in the cooler. Plus they fold down flat and compact.
>>
>>933631
I have some of those and use them when I'm fishing for rainbow trout that they stock in some of the local community ponds around here. They aren't ideal for use on the boat, especially if I'm moving around a lot trying to get on the fish.

Eh, I have plenty of empty 5 gallon buckets laying around, I think I'll just try to find some of these at Home Depot:

and then use a cheap, battery powered aerator like this:

http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Aerator/product/74343/

I could even put some extras together as gifts.
>>
>>933637
Or hell, I have several old ice chests laying around that I don't use much anymore, I'll just slap the aerator on one and repurpose it as a bait container.

They make those lids too. My current minnow bucket is a regular white 5 gal bucket with one of these lids. Only problem is the summer heat gets them so fast. Last time I used it I got like a dozen and a half med-small shiners in that big bucket around 5:30am and it was summer and they were floating by 9:30am because the water got warm so fast.

Custom rod is all finished. Theres a few rough spots in the epoxy where i didnt trim tag ends well enough, and one where a decal popped up while drying. Nothing structurally sketchy but next time my finish will be mint.

The rod weighs next to nothing. One of the lightest ive ever held. Its a lamiglas triflex rated 1/4 -1oz lures. Its a graphite blank with a fiberglass tip making it extra soft.

This rod is going to be used for bucktailing for fluke (obviously). Now i just have to wait til may to try it out...

What are fluke? Flounder/sole?

Why do you want an extra soft action is it easy to rip fluke lips and mouths with hooks or what?
>>
>>933736
What did it cost after everything? What would a complete rod of the same quality cost? Less or more?

I can never guess with shit like that. Growing up with BMX bikes, you could buy a complete bike for $800 and if you wanted to build the same bicycle buying all the parts separate, it would probably be like $1200.

But then I heard that computers are normally cheaper if you custom build them, the opposite of the bicycle where you could buy one off the shelf for $1200 or build one with the same parts and capabilities for $800.

I surf fish once in a while with a pair of waders. Never in freshwater though. I just get in the kayak if i cant reach a spot from shore.

one of my favorate spots is a sandbar that goes close to 400 yards offshore ( well the furthest ive gone out)
ankle to chest deep water with the fish between your legs
Sadly mostly that is there are sea robbins but ive gotten a fair share of fluke out of there, havent been there in a striper or bluefish blitz but still fun

I'm also around the same at 6'3" and 230, I can tell you now that 13-14 ft is really the minimum for and kind of handling if you're sea kayaking, and at least 11-12 ft if you're sticking to rivers.
Anything shorter than that is either for specialized kayaking like surfing or whitewater or is just pure meme-tier.
If you can't afford a decent kayak of that size, you could always build a skin on frame for a small fraction of the price of say, a real 17 footer sit-in sea kayak (which, if you get to enjoy kayaking at all, is what you'll want to get anyway.)
>>
>>933829
i think the anon asking is asking about freshwter

Your best bet is to continuously check Craigslist and check it often, that's where l got mine. I'm 6'1 260 and my field and stream eagle talon 12 works and holds up well. It can handle a lot of abuse and wake once you get used to it
>>
>>933831
You're not concerned about the fins bottoming out or hitting rocks under the surface on shallow launches? I'd steer clear myself in favour of a real sea kayak that's retrotfitted for fishing, but then again; my area has a lot of beaches that are shallow at low, some with some decent chunks of granite sitting just below the water.

>>933833
A lot of the cheap Chinese kayaks are made of non UV stable poly and will decay in time, they also have poor quality fittings and the fasteners are poor quality stainless or even mild steel in some cases. Best to avoid them and buy a decent second hand kayak as your first boat, even for lake-only fishing.

>>933836
This really, I was looking for one for a friend just after Christmas and NY and sure enough, you see some half decent brand name kayaks for sale.
>>
>>933837
while id love to have a 17 ft sea kayak i think a 13 ft hobbie will be better for me, the ability to paddle while fishing is very nice plus if/when upper body gets fatigued i have the peddals
you can take them out for launch etc and put them in when youre in 5 ft of water

i very well may not end up getting any new kayak but thats what ive been thinking

Paddling when fishing does sound kinda nice where you're not allowed to anchor and there's lots of current, but if you're either anchored, trolling or drifting it'll be nothing that a small anchor can't do desu.
Does you upper body get fatigued normally? it shouldn't really unless you have a paddle with very large fins or you paddle with your arms (disregarding conditions, that is)

Getting a new kayak is great and you should if you can afford it, but it might not be mush of an upgrade if it's only for fishing and doesn't improve much upon what you already have.
If you're buying a new kayak because you want to camp, tour or cross channels and other more ambitious activities, I'd recommend it whole heartedly.
Try a few out if you can, as well as smaller bladed touring paddles; you'd be surprised at the difference that a new paddle can make by itself to your handling and efficiency on the water.
>>
>>933845
my real issue right now is my current kayak is quite wide(3 ft) , non streamlined, heavy and too short for the ocean(10.5 ft),
upper body tends to get slightly fatigued after a day on the water and alot of paddiling ( full day)
i ostly want to increase the range i have with dual transportation , get something slightly more streamlined and st it up nice for fishing
im hoping 13 ft will be a nice compromise between something small enough i can use in fresh water and something slightly longer that handles ocean well
>>
>>933848
An important element of technique is to have a long stroke that uses a lot of torso rotation as well as using the arms, but assuming your technique is fine and you're eating plenty to keep your energy up on the water; it's very likely to be your kayak.
Width of the hull relative to the length is the main factor in how fast and efficient you are, and a well shaped hull will help you be able to steer properly by leaning your kayak.
3 feet and 10.5' is always going to be slow and have problems with tide locking and choppy water handling, and even with decent fitness you will be limited severely in how many miles you can clock in a day.
Depending on how much stuff you carry when you fish, you might be able to find a decent 2nd hand sit in kayak or a slimmer sit on top designed for fishing so be on the lookout in the classifieds and even kayak fishing forums and such to find something that fits the bill.
If you're someone who only keeps the rigs, bait and lures to target specific fish that you're after and a rod or two, you can choose pretty much any boat you want and get the best performance by buying a longer sit in kayak for example and fitting it with a rod holder or 2 and loading your cargo inside the hull in dry sacks or float bags.
Sit on top fishing kayaks are a massive compromise really and I'd only recommend them for people who don't go out in rough conditions or very far offshore and just want stacks of rod holders and space for a cooler for fish (The only clear advantage they have in my book, and you can easily fit 2-3 rod holders to a sea kayak if you really need to, it being harder to fit a cooler is the only real downside.)
>>
>>933690

If heat id getting to them, changing out the water every other hour or so with cooler water should help.

If I'm out fishing all day I usually have a cooler with ice and/or frozen bottles of water. I'll toss one in with the bait.
>>
>>933796

Your weight/size and experience kayaking is critical.

For most people 5'5 an 175 or so, a 10 footer does okay but a 12 footer is always better.

If you're darn close to 6 feet and/or well past 200lbs then either get a 30 inch or wider 12 foot kayak or go 13+ feet.

You're not going to find a decent kayak for a bigger guy under 500 bucks unless you get one on sale with a coupon or buy used off of Craigslist.

Everyone who gets a kayak either ends up not liking it and selling it, or eventually upgrades to a better kayak and sells the old one.

I like my sun dolphin. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but I've paddled around with my buddy on the back and I wasn't worried about tipping or anything. I've been out on it all day and haven't really been super tired from it, unless it's very windy. This thing catches wind like crazy.

The 12' (pic) is around $400-500 new. 400lb capacity. I have an excursion, but the Aruba is the same thing just bright colros and it doesn't have a rod holder up front.

After googling it looks like the one I have was discontinued.
>>
>>933842
You can get a DUI in a kayak just so you know.

Same way you can get one on a bicycle or riding lawn mower.
>>
>>933819

Get the Perception Striker 11.5 or West Marine Cayman. It won't be the fastest boat but the thing is a fucking truck that even my 250lbs ass can stand and toss a cast net from.

And I don't really need speed when I only paddle a couple miles around a lake, down the creek/river, or along bayou/backwater.

Any other kayak as stable is going to cost nearly twice as much.

Yeah bro you will be fine. It's just 24 beers. Harmless. No one has ever died because they were drinking alone on a boat voyage.

You sound as dumb as those fags who smoke weed and drive and act like they drive fine as they split two lanes.
>>

Just put plastic screen mesh over the top with a star cut so you can stick your hand or a net in.

The side holes would need mesh over them too honestly. Too big for bait fish.
>>
>>933879
>>fishing poles, kayak, and all equipment taken to be sold to fund game and fish

Idk about this one. They can't do that for any infraction can they? I would assume they could only do that if you were poaching/commiting a felony.
>>
>>933881
Yes they can. Look up civil forfeiture and how game and fish have basically the power of FBI agents these days. If you got caught with drugs, poaching, or doing some illegal shit they can take everything. If you are poaching they even get to automatically search your house for more evidence of it.

It changed in the last decade. Game fish didn't even use to be able to issue DUI tickets or arrests. People would just shoot wardens and shit so they got militarized like the rest of the police.

They can take shit easier than police officers can if they want to be dicks.
>>
>>933881
>thinking you can't get a felony from a DUI

I have some news for you.
>>
>>933885
Something something erosion of rights rant. It kinda makes sense for poaching, but for something relatively minor that's pretty fucked.

I wonder if something like that has happened and the person took game and fish to court.

>>933887
Well I know it's possible, but probably pretty hard to do on a kayak.
>>
>>933888
All you have to do it have a certain blood alcohol content and you can get a felony or if you cause an accident and someone is hurt or dies.

All said it would probably be like 10 grand in legal fees and fines. No joke.

If you shoot a squirrel or take a fish out of season they can take you boat, atv, truck, anything used to aid in the act of poaching including rifles, reels, equipment, etc...

I have seen it happen to guys taking extra snook out of slot. Pretty funny stuff. Some idiot was surf fishing and hiding them under beach sand while he caught more. All his shit got confiscated.

Weed will cause civil forfeiture too. You actually don't even have to be guilty. Just the suspicion of poaching or crime is enough for them to take your shit.

Think about that next time you keep a fish a half inch too small. All it takes is officer 2 inch cock to have been recently divorced to ruin your life.

Not here, first time offense is always a class B misdemeanor. Unless you're over the limit with a child under 15 in the car, or like you said, you hurt or kill someone.

>Weed will cause civil forfeiture too.
I really don't understand how that would be constitutional. My fishing rods aren't related to the crime at all. It makes a lot of sense for poaching, but still very questionable without having a conviction.

I'm not saying you're wrong and it's not technically legal, just that it seems like a massive infringement on the 4th amendment.

Wrong, in Texas a BWI is only issued for motorized craft (boats, personal watercraft, motorized ski board) and sailboats. Row boats, canoes, kayaks, and innertubes that are propelled only by human power don't fall under BWI laws. If you're drunk off your ass in a canoe or kayak then you can still get arrested for public intoxication but you can't get a BWI.
>>
>>933939
You tell yourself that. If you cause a problem or an accident of any kind you're getting a DUI. A DUI doesn't even have to be over the legal limit. It's up to the discretion of the officer.

You could get one on a fishing inner tube.

Even just having your car keys on you while I the kayak is enough because it proves your intention. To trailer out and drive home.

You get a DUI if you fall asleep I'm your parked car too.

I don't know why you think I'm lying.

If you engage in that you can have your shit taken by civil forfeiture especially if it's a drug other than alcohol like weed.

Read the link that was posted. You have no property rights according to Texas law unless you own land. They can't take your house. That's it. What is a bilge pump?
I think you've got it the wrong way around, many SOT kayaks are difficult or impossible to drain if they take on water far offshore unless they have a back hatch that you can pump out water from.
You're many times more likely to sink a SOT, Draining it at sea without a pump is also much more difficult also.

>>933940
He could be right. You can get DUIs while riding a bicycle in certain places. And you can get DUIs under .08 too, often times when people mix booze with other drugs and are visibly fucked up and fail the field sobriety tests.

A DUI on a kayak does seem a little overboard. But I could believe it since a lot of state and local gov'ts are trying to come down hard on drunk boating. A few year back IL had a really bad summer with drunk boaters getting people killed and they got really strict with alcohol and boats.

But you also have to remember- the police can arrest you for basically any bullshit with little reason and it is up to you to prove yourself "not guilty" in court. Good ol' USA.

I know a guy who was arrested for drunk driving. Here's the thing. He was not in his vehicle when the cops arrived (fictitious report of someone firing off a firearm). He was at a family campsite, on private property. They wanted proof of ID which he had in his truck. He crawled into the bed of the truck under the truck's topper to get the ID. As soon as he entered the truck they arrested him. He lost his truck. He was in holding and they impounded the truck and had an auction in the morning. The truck was auctioned for $500 to one of the officers.

It was a "2014 Ford F-450 Super Duty King Ranch Crew Cab 8ft Bed DRW 4WD" and was brand new with only a couple thousand miles on it and all tricked out; worth $43k at the time I think.

He was released and all charges were dropped. He never got his truck back, but he did get $500.

He's not talking about taking water through a hole in the hull or something, but taking water in the cockpit from the simple act of flipping over.

And if you're offshore in any kayak, you can take a bilge pump for emergencies. You'll only need one for a SOT in the most dire of situations, but Sit-Ins generally make more use of them.

Then there's having the bait bucket/tackle, other gear and trying to land a fish in your lap when your lap. All easier in a SOT.

There's just such a huge difference in cost and effort between the two so I can understand why anon would trade his boat for a kayak. I don't think I will ever own another boat unless I live on the water.

With my jet skis, it was just such a pain to take them out unless the weather was good (lol Chicago) AND you had the entire day free. Gotta start getting them ready at like 9am, round up whoever is going with, hook the trailer up, gas them up, get to the lake by noon, it's close to 1pm by the time you even really get going in the water, fuck around for a couple hours and get some lunch, get back to launch at 4pm, drain em, put em on the trailer, put on dry clothes and it's 6pm when you get home. Unhook the trailer, store em, take a shower, eat some dinner and it's time for bed.

They were fun as hell but especially in Chicago it's so hard to find a Saturday or Sunday with nice weather where you can waste the entire day on them. I would take them out 2 or 3 times a summer and it's just easier and cheaper to rent them for a day.

I understand completely.. It's a bit of a pain getting the boat ready, I usually spend 30 minutes to an hour doing that before anyone else arrives. I'll run a battery charger on the batteries the night before to make sure they're not gonna be dead once we get to the water. I have to make sure that I have an extra 5gal can full of gas as well as 2 stroke mixing oil and I also have to make sure the trailer lights work. It's a hassle launching and hauling the boat out, especially if the ramp is busy or if it's windy. Maintenance on the boat and motor take time and money and paying for boat & trailer registration every 2 years is a couple hundred dollars. I have an old deckboat that's pretty difficult to load back on the trailer considering how flat it is, it doesn't self-center much at all so the trailer has to be at the perfect depth and I have to make a nice, straight shot when hitting the trailer. It's almost impossible to load it without 2 people so I never really take it out by myself.

Luckily I live in East Texas and we have good weather most of the year. Even in the dead of winter there are many days where it's sunny and in the 70's. Also, there are lots of nice lakes near me that take less than 30 mins to get to, and many more within an hour's drive. I'll usually get up at 7am, get a quick shower and get the boat and my fishing gear ready, friends arrive around 8am and we're on the lake fishing by 9am, 9:30am at the latest usually, that includes stopping at a donut shop to get donuts and sausage kolaches on the way to eat once we're on the lake. I have plenty of shop space so I can keep the boat inside at my house, that way I don't have to drive to a storage facility to pick it up.

The boat is MUCH more of a hassle than a kayak would be, that's for sure. If I was fishing solo most of the time then I'd probably get a fishing kayak but I have 2-3 friends who are always down to go fishing so the boat is worth the extra hassle to me.
>>
>>934199
>I don't think I will ever own another boat unless I live on the water.

I reached the same conclusion too. My current situation means I just don't have many people I can go fishing with often enough to justify a boat.

My dad got one of those small Bass Raider boats with a trolling motor, but even that requires 2 people and a pick-up truck to haul around. And since it has a trolling motor, he had to get it registered. And it still ended up costing as much as a decent kayak.

I can sling my kayak on the roof of my Toyota and launch anywhere by myself. I've even started kayak fishing before work. Not too hard considering I don't go in until 1pm. I doubt it'd be worth the time and effort on a boat, though.

Plus I got a friend who does a lot of kayak fishing in Galveston.

My friend and I cut out the whole floor which was rotten, took out all the foam underneath which was saturated and just dead weight, replaced all the rotten main beams with treated lumber, replaced the floor with exterior grade plywood, made all new seats, had to build a new console, re-wired everything and installed new LED headlights, had to replace all the hatch covers with exterior plywood, installed some homemade rod holders and rod storage, beefed up the transom with a 1/4" aluminum plate, had to put a new power pack on the motor, new batteries and fuel lines..... All in all the boat cost me about $3k and a lot of elbow grease before it was "lake ready".
>>
>>934208
>>cost me about $3k

Yeah, at that point, I would have just bit the bullet and got a Hobie Angler kayak.

Still looks like fun, though.
>>
>>934209
I mean, it's a $3k boat + trailer (paid $1500 for boat + trailer, put another $1500 into it during the refurb) that will fish 4 people comfortably. That's pretty cheap for a decent sized boat.

Yeah I don't know why people think I'm bull shitting about the DUI and civil forfeiture stuff. All these tards have to do is Google it. A lot of DUI, drug law, and civil forfeiture law is not even written as "proof beyond a reasonable doubt". It's written as something called "a preponderance of the evidence" which means they only have to prove it's 50% plus any percent over that equals guilt. Meaning an officers suspicion and word in court already equals the 50% of the guilt needed to be proven. All they have to do is provide any percent over that... even fractions of a percent and you are guilty and your civil forfeiture is justified. I used to live in Illinois and live out west now I recall that kid getting run over and killed by a boater in the chain of lakes/fox lake that was drunk and high on coke that spurred the new enforcement. It's hilarious they think it couldn't happen in texas.

>>934069
Thank you for proving my point. I still don't understand why everyone is so butt mad at me. I'm just trying to save people their hobby equipment, truck, and money. This is why people get fucked over. They don't know the law.

>>934087
Oh yeah. Welcome to the world of civil property rights and the lack of "beyond a reasonable doubt" to seize property. People don't know the law. You should all take this guy's story seriously or you can say goodbye to a truck and boat or kayak or gear.

>>934106
Doesn't matter. If it's withing view it's theirs if they want it or believe it to be part of the violation in any way. Again, preponderance of the evidence. Read above. It's fucked up.
>>
>>934240
Tell us the worst of it mate. Officer on your wife gang rapes and murders or what?
>>
>>934251
That's exactly the same thing I was talking about on the Chain O' Lakes. Maybe 5 years ago, possibly a little more. Before that you didn't even need to take a boater safety course to drive boats in IL. You just needed a valid DL or be 18 or if underage I think you could take a course if you wanted to drive a boat.

I took the jet skis on the Fox River a lot and there were always cops on the water on busy weekends but after that kid died they were going pretty hard. I think there had been a handful of other boating accidents right around that time too but not as serious and all that stuff together made them clamp down.
>>
>>934262
Yep I remember. The dude was some rich guy in a speed boat and he was hauling ass WITH NO LIGHTS on the boat and went through a swimming area or some shit right? Like it was at dusk on the sand bar that everyone parties on or something? Maybe that was a different one. A couple people died that year during the housing crisis. Everyone was hitting the booze and drugs hard.

Maybe he ran the kid over while he was water tubing. I don't remember. Just recall the kid dying and he was drunk and on coke. I guess I could Google it but whatever it doesn't matter and that's not the point. The point is since 2008 DUI law has gotten EXTREME especially in new Mexico and Arizona.

The chain and lake Michigan are the only thing about Illinois I miss Illinois. Especially the early fall salmon and trout and fishing for tailing carp in spring flood water. Everything else can go fuck off lol.

I have seen so much dumb shit happen on the chain of lakes on jet skis, boats, and snow mobiles during the ice season. Multiple people from high schools I sort of knew about died or got super hurt.

No one gives a fuck. It's sad.
>>
>>934251
I can promise you, if a cop tried to do that without a warrant they would get shot. And if you really want me to I'll find the cases where people have done this, and won the trial.
>>
>>934269
In a no knock raid on the wrong home you could get away with it and a few have been charged not guilty but...... If an officer identified himself to you and told you to put your hands up and you shot him because "muh property" you are going to enjoy some 25 to life with a bit of ass pounding and maybe a death sentence. You can't just smoke crack or weed on your front porch because you're behind a fence dude.

Anything within plain view of a violation is able to be inspected and searched. A joint roach in your cup holder or a brillo pad is enough to cause no warrant needed search and seizure. Once that is done within an hour a warrant is issued for even more search of they find ant remotely incriminating evidence. Even in Texas.

No, I've definitely told cops to fuck off (in nicer words) because they don't have a warrant. I can drive drunk all I want to on my property. They have no legal right to be there.

Obviously I'm talking about if I 100% have not committed a crime. I'm not saying you can smoke weed and kill a minority in front a cop then be like "lol where's ur warrant Bruh"

Yeah the Chain O' Lakes and the Fox River can be kinda a clusterfuck on the few summe weekends with nice weather. The wakeboardere, water skiers, and kids on tubes are probably one of the worst parts tho. Those lakes and especially the river aren't that big.

I remember being on the river a few years back on a nice Sunday on Memorial Day weekend and it was a clusterfuck. Some dude in a big ass ocean sized speedboat would cruise through at like 40mph and the wake would send tidal waves from shore to shore for like 5min, then we would be rippin on the jet skis at like 50mph and all of a sudden boat full of kids towing a wakeboard would come around the bend and fling the kid off the rope right in front of us. That was always fun because jet skis don't turn when you let off the throttle so when you're cruising and some kids who fell off a tube appear out of nowhere, you just have to turn the bars and gas it and fly around them and they freak out.

I'll probably just order them from Tackle Warehouse one of these days. They have them with the regular treble setup too. The one I lost was 50mm, but there is also 66mm so I'm thinking about that. It is pretty easy, depending on what you want to make on the lathe.

https://www.google.com/search?q=diy+lathe

Mine is just a small DC motor, strapped to a board with soup can metal, with the wood shoved onto the motor shaft with a sharpened screw head in the other end of the wood. I use a Dremel to shape the wood. I use a drop of oil on the screw point to keep the wood from squealing. The hole in the wood on the motor shaft side is slightly smaller than the shaft so that it fits tightly onto the shaft.

Since I use a Dremel instead of chisels, the lathe doesn't need to have much torque. It just needs to spin. For chisels, the wood rolls towards you, but for a Dremel the wood rolls away from you. Don't use a Dremel on a lathe that rolls the wood towards you because it can catch and fuck you up. The black paint allows the profile of the wood piece to stand out a lot better for visibility.

Fishermen are some of the biggest consumer whores you'll ever meet. Their lack of knowledge is easily preyed upon through mystery, superstition, anecdotal evidence, and outright lies. You really only need a small range of lures, in a small range of colors, to cover the conditions you meet and the target fish you want. The fly fishing term, "match the hatch", normally applies to all forms of fishing. That is, your lure should represent whatever the fish are eating normally at the time you are fishing. While there are always exceptions, those exceptions don't add up consistently over time.

>>
>>934636
>You really only need a small range of lures...

Psh, tool. You only need hooks, line, and maybe swivel/weights as the situation dictates.

>> That is, your lure should represent whatever the fish are eating normally at the time you are fishing.

And nothing beats giving the fish what they're actually eating.
>>
>>934665
Everything. It isn't an exact science so most of the tips and tricks you hear will only work in specific situations. Nothing will ever be the correct way to do something 100% of the time.

Best way to learn good tips and tricks is by asking people who are fishing the same spots as you and have years of experience. And then get some experience of your own.

>>934673
That's what I always tell new people. Aberdeen hooks, split shots, bobbers, and whatever bait is the best way to start out. And if they want to venture into lures, a natural colored Rapala and Mepps in the correct size will go a long way.

I just have fishing ADHD
>>
want to go out fishing today but dont know where to go

>>934665
>>What are some lies about fishing? Or very sceptical theories that shouldn't be considered true?

That it's expensive. Like any hobby, you can spend a shitload on it, and there are of course those people who enjoy talking about the latest toys and snub their noses at cheaper geat. But good fishing is really more about locating the fish, getting the presentation right, and knowing how to play/land them. Gear can help, but even if you have the "best" rod, reel, line, and lures if you're fishing the wrong places at the wrong time in the wrong way, you're not gonna catch shit.

Now don't get me wrong, there's some low quality stuff out there that will crap out on you/limit you. But there are plenty of known quality manufacturers that make cheap but very decent stuff. I'm a big fan of Shimano in that regard. My rod/reels set ups cost less than 30 bucks each and have handled plenty of 20+ lbs fish.

Turtles may eat your crippled/dyring/dead live bait. They do not, however, eat healthy fish. They will not "eat all the fish". You don't have to kill them.
>>
>>934665
>>934703

And while we're on the subject of reptiles...

Turtles don't have to wait until they hear the sound of thunder to release a bite. Thunder doesn't matter. I've been bitten by a turtle on a rainy day. Lightning struck, thunder roared, and the turtle didn't let go. I've been bitten by turtles on bright sunny days who immediately let go.

Oh, and Cottonmouths (venomous with a painful and rarely fatal bite) vs Watersnakes (non-venomous and completely harmless). I'll spare you on markings because unless you really know what you're looking for most people can't tell the difference. There are, however, telltale behavioral differences and common misconceptions...

1) A Cottonmouth swims almost entirely on top of the water. They don't go under. Watersnakes will swim with the majority of their bodies under water and just a bit of their back breaking the surface. Cottonmouths are actually much less aquatic than watersnakes and prefer to hang out near the bank rather than be out in the middle of the water.

2) Both snakes can seem somewhat fearless if you expect every snake to flee you at twenty paces. Watersnakes are hungry/greedy little fuckers and some learn that fishermen mean discarded baitfish. They may approach you, but will generally flee if they think you're after them. Cottonmouths, likewise, if threatened, may stand their ground and open their mouths to bluff you away, but will generally flee if pressed. Neither, however, will actually chase you. Trust me, I catch these guys all the time, and if they actually chased you, it'd be much easier on my part.

cont...
>>
>>934706

3) Cottonmouths don't swarm. That story about the skier who ran into a nest are bunk. An Animal Planet reality show once infamously had to dump a bunch of Cottonmouths into a pool so the star could deal with this issue because it doesn't happen in real life. Watersnakes don't swarm either, but are a bit more tolerant of each other than Cottonmouths. Watersnakes are more tolerant of each other and you may see several sunning themselves on branches overhanging water or see multiple snakes active along a shoreline at once. They aren't operating as a group, though. You just have multiple individual snakes doing their own thing being drawn to the same ideal spot(s). As mentioned, Watersnakes are pretty smart, and if they see stuff splashing along the bank they may come investigate, and a Watersnake that's found some baitfish/frogs/food in the shallows makes a lot of splashing.

4) Cottonmouths don't drop into your boat. They suck at climbing. Watersnakes will drop into your boat, as they're not-that-bad climbers that like to bask in bushes and low hanging trees directly over water.

5) Cottonmouths may hold their ground and put on an impressive display, but they're actually not that aggressive. Watersnakes- while non-venomous- can become spastic and bitey little bastards when backed into a corner, and especially when you start poking or grabbing them. But snakes CANNOT JUMP. They can lunge with the forward 1/4 or 1/3 of their body, but we're talking about animals that max out at about 3 feet. They're not spring several feet to tag you.

Most of the impressions people have about these snakes comes from stories they heard and exaggerated encounters that are largely informed by the stories they heard.

Basically what Pepsi said, at the end of the day fishing is pretty much a luck based hobby.

I'm the guy that made the attached. And even me making that whole crazy list, I know that it really comes down to pure chance.

the only facts you can really follow with fishing is that there are specific times of the year when fish are feeding heavier than others. And certain times of the year when they are barely feeding.

Also, people love to use artificial lures. I'm one of those people. But you're probably better off with live baits when it comes to bass and it's cheaper.

I don't know about you guys, but the fun to me is actually catching the fish. If I wanted to just sit and watch dragon flies, I wouldn't take along the rod and reel.

You can be all hardcore and fish on a handline with a bent paperclip if you want, but the truth is that having an assortment of lures, baits, tactics, and techniques in your arsenal up the odds that you'll hook a fish. Different conditions call for different measures.

At the end of the days, it's a luck based numbers game, but you can do things that will give you a better chance.

You don't understand.

>You really only need a small range of lures...

That's like 20-30 lures max if you are fishing various species. More if you are doing saltwater. That's 5-8 lures per species. That covers the zones and lighting/clarity for each species. Beyond that and you are sucking proprietor cock and taking 2 more up your ass. It is like you read it as "you can only have 2 lures!!!!"

While there are always exceptions, those exceptions don't add up consistently over time, kid.

Exactly. I would love for some black or junebug color Husky Jerks or X-Raps. Idk why they haven't done it.

The only dark bass hardbaits I have seen are a few topwaters and then one time I saw one of those Yamamoto diving cranks at Walmart in this smoky black color with red flakes. I was really close to buying it but I'm not a fan of that style of diving crankbait. If it were a jerkbait or a lipless rattler, I definitely would've bought it.

I still want these Sebile baits. Where is TXfag, he seems to have tons of disposable income. I'm gonna pull a Skid and harass him to buy them for me. I mostly just wish I could find them at a nearby retailer.

That Yo-Zuri popper in the pic has some incredible walking action too but I just never get to it since the Rapala Skitter Pops always end up on the line when I'm running a topwater.

They had that Sebile endcap with the "NEW!" signs all over it. Not a great selection, the only 50 size was the lime and they were all extra heavy and the 66 had 3 silver colors all in extra heavy. Maybe these things will start catching on and they will carry more.

They had the Red Eye Shads in a bunch of colors for the 1/4oz size and I was tempted to get on a bunch of those but I need to use the shit I have right now. Especially since I will barely be able to use hardbaits for bass in another month or two.

>>935343
That's why I liked these Flatt Shads so much. You have to work them fairly quick but the wobble they give off is so realistic like a struggling baitfish that is freaking out.

You talkin about the Texas rigs and stuff?

When I lived up north, I never ran soft baits like that. It was always something that replicates baitfish like Rapalas. But then again I always thought during the hottest part of summer like July and August was basically impossible to target bass from shore.

Tried to keep running Rapalas and Mepps when I moved down here and they only worked for a couple months out of the year so I had to concede and start using Texas rigs and other slow shit on the bottom.

Jerkbaits are probably one of the easier lures to use year round though. If it's real warm, sometimes you have to go a bit smaller. Just gotta fish them slower in cold or really warm water provided you can catch the bass when they aren't super deep in a hole.
>>
>>935226
>I'm guessing other fishing methods come into play once it switches to warmer seasons, such as crankbaits.

Depends on where you live, but generally yeah. In winter you'll want to use slow moving baits. Sometimes they like smaller lures and sometimes they want biggers. It really depends on the mood of the fish.

>Are these as simple as just casting and retrieving?

Basically. Just try to run them through cover or as close as you can if you're scared of losing it.

>What should I know about the diving properties?

Don't go too deep for where you're casting, but if there's rocks on the bottom you want the crank to be bouncing off of those. The exception would be when using a lipless crank, I wouldn't suggest bouncing those off of rocks.
