>get visa

>leaving on Friday

First stop, Japan for a year. Got a working holiday visa for a year and a spot on a farm lined up.

Don't let your memes be memes. If you want to go traveling, you can. I could, and I'm a notorious failure.
>>
Straight up /out/some. Niceone. I was on that path and accidentally myself into a career, wife, puppy and house. Kinda regret it and think about what you're doing often.
When you visit countryside Japan you'll be blown away. The outer islands and mountains are beautiful. City Japan is awful and filthy, but the countryside is amazing.
Oneday, I plan to do as you. Godspeed anon.
>>
>>932862
Wouldn't call cities in Japan filthy, very clean compared to other cities. Just incredibly dense with people, can be stressful if your not used to it.
But the giant dense cities are what allows such a small but highly populated country to still have great outdoor areas.

I'm going to do WWOOF when I get there. I saw this guy's vlog about his trip there, and got goose bumps when he panned out over the misty mountains.

Imagine waking up to that every day.
>>
>>932859
Nice OP, have fun.

I always wanted to see Japan, but sadly there is a mandatory fingerprint check when you enter the country now and I refuse to be treated like a criminal just for going on a vacation.
>>
>>932859
Good luck finding a qt /out/ waifu!
>>
I love this trend. Poor fucks, travel America! You have no idea how awesome this country can be. Its seriously lulzy all the people ive met who want to go overseas that have no interest and have never seen the awesome parts of their own country.

You could have saved that 5g and actually traveled instead of spending it all to go workaway on a fuckin shitfarm in glorious nippon.
>>
>>932874
>I'm going to WWOOF

holy fuck i feel bad for you
>>
>>932996
Why? The people I'll be staying with is an old couple who've been hosts for 7 years. I spoke to someone who stayed with them for months, and she told me they're very nice and that the work is fair.
>>
I want to do something similar, is it achievable with crippling student debt?
>>
>>933051
No.

Get rid of your debt first.
>>
>>933051
Only if you go to a country with no extradition treaty with the US and stay here forever.
>>
>>933022
Working does not equal traveling. You spent thousands of dollars to go be a farmer.

>>933062
Implying you can get rid of debt once it exceeds X. Literally I would need to pay more than my income for many years.
>>
>>932859
That's awesome broski, I did the same aged 24 actually. Two years in Australia and one year in Sri Lanka and South East Asia. I also spent a month in Mongolia.

I mostly lived and worked in rural areas while in Australia and saved up most my money by camping.

Now I work a shit job and often think that was the highlight of my life... but I don't regret it one bit.
>>
I'd love to. Would like to learn some practical skills and do something manly like chop wood.
>>
>>933089
Who the fuck pays their student loans?

Inb4 jaded old men tell me that only degenerates stay in debt
>>
>>933087
>Working does not equal traveling.
Nice opinion you have there.

There's no better way to try and live like the locals than doing WWOOF.
>>
idk how you people do it. I work hard all the time and can only afford a vacation maybe once or twice a year. If I can get the time off I'll only be there for like a week and it still strains my finances, and I'm pretty frugal. It seems like only people who have money already can afford to travel endlessly, rich assholes.
>>
>>933124
Brains and brawn.

If you're stuck in a financial situation where you can't save money, then you're basically a slave.

Move. Get a better job. Educate yourself if you can't get a better job. There's no reason to live a stagnated lifestyle when you, as a human being, have the instinctual ability to adapt very well to new situation.
>>
>>933107
>do something manly like chop wood
The first option: you're a 13 year old boy
The second option: you're a gay 13 year old boy who's in denial
>>
>>932859
Dumb cuck, you could've quit your job and lived life on the American road hitchin, hoppin, gettin schwilly with crust punks, and sleepin in the dirt! HAHAHAHA you dumb slave!
>>
>>933131
>If you're stuck in a financial situation where you can't save money, then you're basically a slave.

Can I have this? I've been in need of a good mantra. In all seriousness though, humans are naturally nomadic; the idea that the meaning of life is paying for a home, car, countless bills, student debt, all because you need them to hold a job you wouldn't need if you didn't have those expenses in the first place is ridiculous. I know it sounds like hippy bullshit to a lot of you, but money and things don't bring health and happiness.
>>
>>933121
have fun being a peasant

sure beats the city grind though amiright? XD
>>
>>933121
Live like the locals does not equal traveling
>>
Last year I hitch-hiked, met a ton of awesome people, swam in every creek, stream, river, lake and ocean along the way, taught myself how to mold and fire clay, set effective traps, cooked and ate my first squirrel, and spent three full months getting to sleep under the stars. Now, I could never put a price on that experience, but if I could, it would be a lot higher than the piddly six grand I could have made had I stayed and worked during that time.

/thread
>>
>>932859
I wish you luck, anon.

Just don't spend too long traveling before establishing yourself somewhere. Or do, I mean you can do whatever you want, you're a big boy now. My uncle was the son of an actress in one of the James Bond movies and spent a huge portion of his life just blowing the money away traveling around the world and doing all sorts of stuff. Sure he got the experiences, but at the age of 50 or whatever he is now, he has almost no marketable skills. Now that the money has dwindled to the point where he needs to be conscious of it, he moves from shit job to shit job, quitting after it gets to be a grind.

That being said, what he did was move his family here to rural Canada, buying a decent sized piece of land right near our family and build a noice wood-heated house right beside some forested bit.

Moral of the story, idk m8.
>>
>>932888
If that's the reason you don't go, because you can't tolerate the government having a copy of your finger prints, you clearly don't want to go that badly. I'm not saying its either good or bad but its not a solid reason.
>>
>>933314
Your uncle probably lived more in those thirtyish years than most people who live to be a hundred could have ever hoped for. Yeah, it's a shame that he didn't budget better and go fishing instead of jet-setting, but that's hardy a life of regret. Imagine his regret if he spent all that time working and couldn't physically do anything fun during retirement now.
>>
How the fuck does anyone save money if they don't live with their parents or something?

>inb4 iPhone Starbucks etc

I don't do any of that and it's still impossible to save. I don't have a good job but I work full-time.

Sounds fun OP wish I wasn't poorfag.
>>
"Travel" as a lifestyle is masturbatory and pathetic. Get some skills and do or create something instead of coasting like a faggot while everyone supports you.
>>
>>933346
Hypocrite
>>
>>933112
So should I just defer ever year until I die?
>>
>>932994
I seriously agree
Went on a roadtrip from KY to NV and back, spent $600 for 2 weeks. I'll never forget it.

Although the trip back was the fast part. Back in two days, 16-17 hrs one day.
>>
>>933112
What did you do in that scenario? Skip? How?
>>
>>933346
He's paying for it, what am I missing here? And why are you so angry?

Also OP, are you excited that you can now say baka desu senpai IRL?
>>
>>933346
Sounds like somebody's racked up to much debt to take some time off without destroying their credit.

Some people are responsible enough that we can afford to let loose every once in a while.
>>
>>933360
>>933364
I started traveling and claimed homelessness when they called me, paid 5 bucks a month for 2 years and they dropped 5k off my debt, did it again for the other 5k.
>>
>>933365
Yeah, but it's not an accomplishment. It's basically an extended vacation and/or being a bum.

Nothing wrong with that every once in a while, but for years on end as a "lifestyle" is pathetic. People should stop glorifying it.
>>
>>932874
There are plenty of misty mountains in the US weeb.
>>
OP here.

I'm not from the US. I'm not even going to the US after I made a thread here asking about how people would react to a traveler asking to camp on their land and I found out that half would shoot me on sight.
>>
>>933471
>listening to shitposters
>>
>>933471
As a burger who has been to Japan, you made the wrong choice.

I even told you not to listen to the people in that thread, and posted about how i've traveled the USA and how fucking awesome it is. Japan is novel, but unless you can keep moving that novelty wears off fast. Working on a farm in Japan is going to be exactly like working on a farm anywhere, except you wont be getting paid because of WWOOF.

My advice, dont do that retarded WWOOF shit, use the rest of your money to hitch hike around Japan and actually see the country. Hitching there is retardedly easy and you'll find helpful people literally everywhere you go.
>>
>>933462

Agree. A normie uni kid will go to Scotland. Guess what they'll do? Go to Glasgow, get drunk, eat like shit, leave after a few days.

What did I do? Trained up, wwoofed for 5 weeks. Met all the local farmers in the valley. Have tea with old lady down the road, can't understand anything she is saying her accent is so strong. The butchery in the nearby town gets to know me. Farmer take me out to pub, restaurant for lunch if we are in town, introduce me. I'm just bicycling around in my farmer gear, everyone just assumes I'm Scottish after a while. Go hiking in the hills behind the farm. Farmer gives me transport for setting up next leg of journey and sends me off all set. Bicycle across the freaking highlands, lochs and all. Would wager I "experienced" Scotland more than some drunk uni kid.

Actually those jaded old men are the ones who wrecked it for you. They got majors in things like Sub-Saharan African Studies, racked up 40k in debt and skipped out on the repayment.
Now thanks to them student loans are treated like tax debt-it survives bankruptcy. You're just fucked for life.
>>
>>933191
>money and things don't bring health and happiness.
Actually they do.
Studies have repeatedly shown that the richer you are, the happier you tend to be. And it makes sense when you think about it-more money means less debt; more ability to cope with emergencies and you're able to do, go, and buy what you want on your schedule.

When times are really busy, they'll have people working 10 hour shifts 7 days a week.
Those weeks suck because no life at all, but the paychecks are NICE.

Good for you Op.

I am preparing for a trip to.
This march i am going to do the Appalachian trail, its my first time traveling by myself.

How did you get your gig on the farm lined up? Also how can you be free and travel if you work on the farm? are you going to only work there for a few months to save up some money?
>>
>>934859
yo OP >>934421 here

what all did you do to prepare? apart from packing food and basic camping gear before hitting the road, im at a loss of what to do, to get on your level.
hostels, slumming, just figuring shit out on the road? I can do that but I keep psyching myself out that theres more to plan

burning up to get going already.
>>
>>934934
I'm a few drafts in, and don't really know how to answer this. Everyone wants something different, and you'll end up growing a lot very quickly, for better or worse depending on the situations that you put yourself in, so what you're going to want is going to change on a daily basis.

My plan this year is to get some 'me time'. A bed roll, a pack pole and a very very remote lake are my plan for the summer. By fall I might decide that I want to take up a seasonal job and upgrade some gear or I might decide that a warm beach is more the speed I'm looking for, hell, maybe it'll be a seasonal job on a warm beach.

What's your plan? Maybe I can give you some solid advice on what might be a good idea to change.
>>
>>934953
first idea is since ive already been quite a bit around the US, i'll do that during these winter months to 'train' for overseas travel. I have some camping gear, boots, no good hiking backpack
get to some isolated bits like west coast and national parks, and a few major cities I want to see

once the spring months hit, or w/e then plan is to get to europe and try to scoop around from UK to poland (maybe russia) and then swing south through slavics and over to france/switzerland/italy.
thats where the snag is, travel in the US I can camp or sleep in my car, but in EU its more complicated. trains, hitchiking (fuck that), taxi (also fuck that). im not sure what to bring and how to get around. just jump from hostel to hostel? but that's like $100+ a week minimum just for the room, if my research is good. thats going to cost a fuckload, etc.

maybe Africa or Australia after that idk.
>>
>>935067
Hitchhiking isn't as bad as you think. The only people that will pick you up are the people that want to pick you up. Unless you're a female traveling alone I'd recommend it, even then it has been done. Trains are usually a better way to cover long distances, but it takes money and I personally prefer to go without.

I'd pack some sort of light shoe. Especially when you're walking on roads, you'll get tired much faster wearing boots than carrying them.

I've heard good things about roadside camping through Europe; Look it up yourself to be sure, but I understand this to be some sort of "freedom to roam" law that you're basically allowed to pass through areas without getting hassled. Again, don't take my word for it.

As far as what to bring, I'm a huge fan of the bivvy setup. No need to place stakes or find trees that are just the right distance apart, just roll it out and crawl inside. Plus if you're in an area that you don't want people walking up on you while you're sleeping, they're pretty low profile. Mine is an SOL escape, CCF pad, Thermolite Extreme liner and a small piece of PVC tarp for a groundcloth. You'll probably also want to carry a med kit, hygiene kit, cook kit, change of clothes, water filter (in some places you'll want to filter tap water too), but I've done shorter trips (a couple weeks), where all I've needed is my bed roll and a CamelBak.
>>
Fuck you because i live in a shitty country and i have to work for like 6 months for 1k$ oh also no one gives fucking visa to me no longer then then 5 day.
>>
>>935077
well thats good news. the whole "backpacking around europe" thing seems to be pretty common, but no idea. Never even heard of a bivvy, but it looks like a tarp and one of those could easily work (and the basic campign supplies like the med kits etc.) Then, I could go touring a city for 3 or 4 days and stay in a decent hostel while I see the sights before getting back to the Bivvy camping. Need to look for national parks over there

Theres some fairly cheap train tickets just to transit from major cities and through borders, but good to know that a bedroll and water source is all we really need to just nomad around. do you stock on food as well or acquire it local? I suppose eating egg mcmuffins for 3 days straight while hoofing it in europe wouldnt be bad.
>>

Well gotta thank you OP, I never considered that being a communist was the true path toward my dreams.
>>
>>935156
Glad I could help. A bivvy is basically just a bag that your sleeping bag goes in. Some have little frames like a mini-tent for your head, some are open at the hood, some are insulated or thermally reflective, all are waterproof and breathable and basically replace a tent completely.

As far as food goes, I learned pretty quick that planning ahead sucks. You'll have a lot more fun if you don't restrict yourself to what you thought you'd want six months ago. I always carry eight packs of MRE peanut butter as an emergency ration, but what I eat is dependent on what I can find, catch or buy at the time.

If money starts getting tight, the best calorie to cost ratio for fast food that I've found so far is (McD) sausage biscuits with mayo.

>>
>>936536
Pretty much, yeah.

There's no shower at the farm I'm staying at. Instead, they have a traditional goemon buro bath tub that you heat by firing wood under it.

All that chopping today was rewarded pretty well with a nice hit soak. Really fun to try and live like the locals do.

That's cool, anon. I briefly considered doing WWOOF/similar and now realize I have grievously fucked myself.

Unrelated but: Was supposed to go to Scotland a few years ago, back when the Commonwealth Games were to be held in Glasgow until a friend backed out. Plan was to spend a couple days in/around London, catch a train north, spend some time in Glasgow for the games, hitchhike/bike the countryside for a couple weeks, work our way to Edinburgh, then return to Heathrow to fly back home. Was rural Scotland everything I imagined it and be? Please share more, anon.

Imma make you all a little more jelly.

Next week, the hosts I'm staying with will take me to a local smithy where they make farm tools. I will buy myself a genuine, handmade, Japanese machete, AKA The Nata.

Pic related.

>>937902
I don't know how did you even think I was asking about WWOOF. Please calm your tits, mate.

>>937960
>>938015
Thanks, for the answer. It must have been exhausting to deal with this amount of work, but I see it's quite rewarding - this bamboo is so aesthetic!

I'm also 23 and I'm finishing my computer science degree and I honestly do not recommend this path for you if you were tired by living stressful inner city life. The amount of time you need to spend indoors in front of computer screen is bonkers. IT job has quite good salary even in such a shit eastern European country I'm living in, so what you did could be possible in less amount of time or with better savings. Thanks for realizing this to me, OP.
>>
>>938068
Buying this neat stuff ain't making me jelly. It's simply consumerism, mate.

However meting traditional smithy in person is making me quite jealous - someday I would like to take apprenticeship with a smithy.
>>
>>938079
It's not the buying part that's nice, it's the fact that it's a unique item that I can't get at home.

It's both practical, a part of an old tradition, and a nice souvenir.
>>
>>938100
Unless you will use it on daily basis, I still would call it consumerism.
>>
>>938100
>>938118
Anything that's not pure utilitarianism is consumerism.
>souvenier
goyim gonna goy
>>
>>938118
I dare you to go throw out any item you own that you haven't used today or yesterday.

Otherwise you're a hypocrite.
>>
>>938120
By daily basis I meant regularly not every day. For example I'm not using my axe every day, because I don't need to.

However I agree with you, I'm kind of hypocrite myself as I own a lot of things I don't really need. But I am well aware of it and I'm trying to change it. One cannot just throw everything out it takes little steps to achieve this sort of functional minimalism. And the first thing is to stop your consumerism.

But please don't understand me wrong, I'm not criticizing you. If you want to buy this item and it means a lot to you, you certainly should buy it. From my point of view it's rather useless (it seems nata do quite specialized jobs) and it probably will hang on my wall, yet I am in no position to know it with the most certainty as I haven't even touched one.
>>
>>932859

Is there anything like WWOOF, but geared towards somewhat more technical skills? Things like machining, welding, woodwork, etc. Sounds really awesome, but I feel like I wouldn't be as useful as a farmer
>>
>>938505
It's not only farms that WWOOF represent. In Japan at least, there's a lot of country cafes, backpacker lodges, and NPO's who also use WWOOF to get volunteers, and you'd be able to use your construction skills there.

In February I'm heading to a cafe/lodge in Chugoku. It's still too cold to grow something there, so I'll be doing other work. What that is, I don't know.
>>
How much freedom do you have with these types of farms in WWOOF? Do they work you 24/7, or do you get weekends, time off, etc.? how likely are you to be taken advantage of?
>>
>>938524
I work about 6 hours a day.

>wake up at 6
>start work at 7
>breakfast at 8
>work again at 9
>lunch at 12
>from 13, do random tasks like walk the dog
>take a bath around 16:30
>dinner at 17
>free from there on

And I get one day off a week. I'm living with an old couple, both are 66 years old, and they're so fucking nice and serve so good homecooked meals that I honestly don't mind doing a little extra work since they clearly need the help of strong, young people.

What people don't realize is that you're free to fuck off any time you want if you feel like you're being taken advantage of or treated unfairly. Also, WWOOF have very strict host control, and any complaint filed against a host would be taken very seriously.
>>

Mate, that is LITERALLY what I'm doing now. I sold ALL my possessions except what I could carry. I got nothing at home, no apartment, nothing in storage, except for a few important documents I'm keeping at a friend's place.

I've travelled since I can remember. Not those pansy arranged tours, I'm talking camping innawoods and going into the countryside in strange countries. Why the fuck do you think city life was killing me? Because I'm another millennial with a snowflake syndrome? I've worked in a hotel for 4 years, and I've seen a gazillion of those pretentious hitchhiker types, and I know for a fact that I would never associate myself with them.

How so? A credit score is based on your payment history. A good credit score indicates the individual has a history of paying their bills on time and are likely better managers of their money. Here's a (You), I hope getting some attention makes you settle down

>>938070
>almost finished 1 semester left in CS degree
>sick of programming, math, sitting down
>tfw employment is the only way to pay back loans
I don't think it would be so bad if I actually enjoyed what I was doing, but fuck man, I'm seriously not interested in spending 2-3 years doing CRUD shit, pretending to work, and having 6 five minute stand-up meetings a day
>>
>>944604
It's discriminatory against blacks, women and other POC
>>
>>933471
Americans tend to be the nicest people overall when compared to people of other nations. Don't listen to shit posters on 4chan.
>>
I made a youtube channel. First video is up, but it's shabby. I'm making a new one tomorrow.

You guys interested?
>>
>>947932
If it's of decent quality and is aesthetic, then yes
>>
>>947364
Americans' niceness is superficial and fake. At least that's my experience as a tourist.

Give me something like Norway anytime, where people are superficially distant and cold, but are actually genuine.
>>
>becoming a literal slave just to live somewhere else

I don't get it.
>>
>>947960
You don't get it do you simpleton? Employees are the true slaves as they are much easier to control and manipulate against their own interest. Read an economics book nigger, the guy you are calling a slave is having the experience of a lifetime and can walk away whenever he wants while you as an employee are stuck exactly where you are with your only option of working at a different Taco Bell
>>
>>947981
>working in another country
>traveling
>the same thing

ok

person you are defending is an unpaid laborer
>>
>>947932
fuck no.

you really went to japan and the most you're doing other than working is going to be e whoring your personal blog bullshit

>>
>>947944
your experience as a tourist? what, you went to six flags and bought a nice dinner?
>>
>>947984
You have a small mind
>>
>>947993
is that right?

how bout you go the fuck outside so you can stop putting faggots like OP on a pedestal for no fucking reason
>>
>>947986
Is that seriously the only way you can imagine tourism?
>>
>>948015
that's a question faggot. can you even answer it without ass pains?
>>
>>947996
You seem very angry that op is getting positive attention, do you need more attention? Have a (you). Maybe you can convince yourself that someone somewhere likes (you).

Good job OP on triggering the snowflakes
>>
>>948029
Revert to memes because I'm right and you know it faggot. You wanna go suck OP's dick for real instead of just on here? I've got half your ticket money to Japan right here you dick riding fuccboi piece of shit.
>>
>>948017
I spent 6 weeks in California, Nevada and Arizona.

You don't have to address my actual point, but if you won't, just shut up.
>>
>>948043
You came to america, went to commifornia and the desert and based your opinion that americans arent that nice on that. My dude you did it wrong. Ive never been to norway but ive traveled the usa for years on foot and lemme tell you you went to the wrong places. No reason to be so fucking butthurt.
>>
>>947932
only if Casey Neistat quality
what is it
>>
>>948036
Are (you) still mad about op being a happening dude?
>>
>>948170
Im not kidding. Live a little and go bang OP like the faggot you are. I will pay half your flight just to help OP get his nut off in your sweet, sweaty, neckbeard ass.
>>
>>948180
>Being this mad about a long distance bromance

Have you ever done anything special like op? Maybe all of 4chan can worship you too.

No. We spent 10 yrs scraping to repay. This is what responsible adults do. Better option for you is only take out loans for degrees that are marketable.

Today I couldn't find the shovel, so I fixed an old broken one.

This in turn have led me to being tasked with fixing all the broken farm equipment, which is fucking awesome because I love repairing stuff.

Also, I broke my own saw when sawing a tedious log, but today I found this old rusty bastard and asked if I could buy it. They gave it to me for free. The handle is solid hardwood and the blade is some kind of spring steel, so I'm pretty hyped about getting it in to ship shape.

>>
OP you're a total faggot for sure, but as someone who lived in the Kyushu for four years (>he doesn't know Kyushu is the heaviest US military presence in Japan, >he believes he's getting a Real Traveler tm experience) I do really envy your trip and comfy rural lodgings.
You best get to hiking all the local mountain ranges: Aso, Koradake, the list goes on.

t. Kyushufag in NYC
>tfw haven't hiked in over a year
>>
>>933345

Hung with the foreign exchange kids A LOT in college. Moved from white town with not 1 black to affrican jungle of over 95% black. Foregn people were moslty all cool as fuck. Hooked a bunch up with cars and practice for the dl tests and shit. Learned a lot of different cultures from 1 place. 0 travel required.

Hey all.

I'm still doing fine here at the farm. The weather is turning for the better now.

On Monday I change location to the hippie commune-thing. Let's see what happens.

Also I've put up a video showing some of the work I've been doing at the farm.
>>
>>944604
Except the part that when you pay off everything it goes right back down. Need to keep a "revolving" line of credit. No thanks.

>>
>>952705
Yeah no shit there's a difference, those dudes are actually traveling constantly and having awesome experiences all around their country. This dude is sitting on a farm. Your old man logic of
>no work=bad bad bad bad
Is totally irrelevant and retarded. Kys my man.
>>
>>952825
Your shitty logic of
>being in one place=bad bad bad bad
is what's retarded my man. The dude's having a unique experience that he can and will walk away from at any time.
