Floridian here. how do you deal with spider webs getting in your face when walking through trees? it's happened to me a couple times before where i walk straight into a spider web that's practically invisible. is there any way around this?

We have a species of large, nocturnal orb weaver spiders here in East TX that love to string their webs up between two trees at around head height... Walking through the woods at night here you're constantly running into their webs. By constantly I mean every 30 - 50 feet or so. Often times the spider will then frantically crawl around on your body after you hit their web and the fuckers have a habit of biting you on the neck or arm as well. I hate them. I usually only walk around the woods at night when I'm hunting wild pigs so I try to hold my rifle vertically out in front of me when I'm walking through areas that will probably have spiderwebs. That way the rifle hits the web first and not my face. You might try the same with a walking stick or something.

i just use a walking stick thats taller than me. A stick such as this is also useful for navigating the vine infested woods of eastern north carolina.
>>931649
keep a stick in front of your face or do a karate chop type motion with your hand. Stupid but works. Also take your time
>>931649
You just get used to it. Most of the spiders that build big webs in places you might be walking are harmless to people.

Who is this semen demon and where do I find nekkid pics?
Asking for a friend.

I constantly swish a small thin stick in front of my face as I walk. If you don't, you get one of these on your face every 6 feet.

Milana Vayntrub, aka Lily the AT&T Girl
No nudes of which I am aware.

Stick, hiking poles, etc. Whenever I go out on poorly maintained trails I spend the whole time cowering behind a stick and still end up walking through one every 20ft. It's why I wish it was more practical to bring a flamethrower innawoods.

>Take large palm tree leaf
>Fan up and down in front of you to destroy any webs

Many a lawnmower has been wrecked cause of these fuckers.
>>931874
Lost.
I work lawn care/landscape and people don't know how true this is.
>>931788
REEEEEEE, fuck those little bitey bastards.
>>931874
how the fuck does a spider wreck a lawnmower?
>>931887
>hauling ass on riding lawnmower trying to finish mowing as quickly as possible
>ride into spider web
>spider is now crawling all over you but you only feel it intermittently as hits your bare skin occasionally on your neck or arm
>freak out, flail your arms around trying to get the spider off
>lawn mower runs into tree / bush / vehicle
>fucking spider is still crawling on you
It only takes a second or two.

Have you considered attempting to conquer your fear? We had some baby huntsmans crawling around, recently. I considered that if I captured one I could maybe let it crawl on me every day as it grows into adulthood.
I definitely want to be completely unphobic of spiders before I have kids so I can break the chain.

South Floridian here. I just learned to accept fate and keep walking like nothing happened. All of our orb spiders are non venomous. I think.
>>931918
Fucking orb weavers. I have so many of these around my house and I'm constantly trying to relocate then so I don't get a face full of web every time I try to take out the trash.

I saw something similar to that when I was fishing at a lake nearby. It was black and yellow and I tried to search for whatever it was and closest I could find was some sort of garden spider maybe? I can't remember. Anyway the body was probably 2.5" long and it was like 4"+ from leg to leg.
When I first walked up to the web, I thought somebody had tangled some fishing line because it was so thick. It stretched like 12" from a tree to a fence.
>>931649
Carry a fishin pole. Whenever I'm walking near trees and bushes around lakes, I always wave the rod around in front of me to take down any webs.
I also had a black widow make a web on my hand truck at work and it was there for like 2mos. Brought her around with me all day and she was a couple inches from my leg all day. One day a coworker wanted to borrow it and after I gave it to him I'm like "just watch out for the black widow" and he freaked the fuck out.
>>931649
I try to spot them, or wave a hiking staff in front of me when I am in an area that has a lot of them.
Of course you can't get them all so usually I just wipe them off my face. Sometimes I take a big one right in the grill, which causes me to slap at my face frantically to get it off. After a few of the former, a few of the latter, sooner or later I take one that feels like it has something solid on it....like an actual spider....so I really go wild slapping at my face to try to kill the spider before it bites me to death.
This ends with me screaming GODDAMN FUCKING SPIDERS HOW MANY OF THESE FUCKING BASTARDS CAN THERE BE IN THE WOODS. That kind of resets me and I start over again.

Pic related is giant spoder that was black and yellow and like 4" across. iPhone camera is incapable of focusing on shit like that and taking a good pic.
That's the fishing rod handle in the pic which is maybe 1.5" across.

...and my black widow buddy
This is what I wear in the florida woods. it protects me from the spider webs by chopping them down before they hit me and if a wild hog knocks me down, i don't hurt my head.

This so much, I live in constant fear while on the job.

Not a garden spider. Like like a Nephila sp.
I have these. They fall onto you when you hit limbs/bushes while fishing. They skitter across the water and crawl up you.
>>932111
>Like like
Eh, "It does look like a Nephila sp. though." Not even sure what happened there.

I'm not an entomologist, but it is my hobby. I understand that it's basically socially engrained to be grossed out or freaked out by bugs and I've undone most of that via exposure or reading - I'm totally calm discovering a spider or a house centipede or a roach -
but it's still startling to have something physically appear really close to you. It's a tough reflex to crack.

Also heres my pet spider from this summer

That was probably it. The one pic on the Nephilia wikipedia page is from Davie which is like 15min away from where I found it.

Most of the webs I deal with are usually spiny orb weavers and golden orb weavers, and only the golden ones sting a bit. About a bee sting. But I've cut down plenty of trees with the golden ones falling on me. Generally keep to themselves and try to find the quickest way off of you.
