is there anything wrong with wearing a mil spec backpack while camping, will other hikers give the look?
>>
>>928153
Fuck'em who cares, it will probably be the only time you even make contact with that particular person for the rest of your life.
Not everyone likes spending 200+ dollaredos on a pack.
>>
>>928153 are you full camo gear with a stupid scout hat and sunglasses staring at people across campgrounds you will. but most hikers look at your food for judgement

why would you give a shit what a person that you will never see again thinks about your backpack choice
99.9999999999% of hikers don't give a shit what pack you have.

I've never been given "the look" but I always feel like an autist when I take my tacticool bag for a stroll.
>>
>>930028
I agree.

I have a ten year old Camelbak BFM in ACU. Its the biggest pack they made at the time. Maybe still is.

It feels too high speed for casual hikes, but xtreme comfy, so I'm not spending money to avoid people thinking I'm Ryan Gosling levels of autism.
They're going to have to deal with it.

Kind of wished it was an earth color when I backpacked Europe with it.
I got some weird looks, but not from everyone.
ACU was rather new and much less common at the time though.
Now you can find ACU stuff at any street market over there.
>>
>>930028
I always feel like an autist so I figure I should just embrace it, lel. I have a gf anyway, it's not as if I need to care about what other people think outside of the workplace anymore.
>>
I have a pretty boring looking green kelty backpack - no molle or anything obviously military on it - and when I last went hiking with it somebody on the trail asked me if I was "playing army"

not even joking, I was fucking embarassed and I haven't used it since

Many mil spec packs have bad hip support because they're supposed to be worn with a gear belt/rig/whatever as well. I have no problem with you wearing one but there are a lot of cringy posers out there who also wears them..
And get a bag with good hip support for the love of god!

I understand that 300D polyester is stronger than 200D polyester but I just saw a backpack, one color scheme says 150D x 300D polyester while the other color scheme of the same backpack is 600D polyester
150D x 300D polyester
vs
600D polyester
Which is stronger? The x part is confusing me, makes it sound like 150 times 350 which is a higher number than 600

>>
>>930429
I only brought it up because I just joined the Army and the UCP pattern is being phased out in favor of the OCP pattern (Which looks much better imo) on the Army Combat Uniform. So in a few years when someone calls camo ACU they'll be talking about a different pattern. Also I believe before they used the UCP pattern they called the Army Combat Uniform BDU (battle dress utility) if that's the case it makes sense the acronym ACU would be associated with the UCP pattern since I believe that's the only pattern associated with the name 'till now. Totally useless info I was just curious about your packs camo lol.

There's nothing wrong with it, but military gear tends to be a lot more uncomfortable than (good) civilian gear

Your pack is the most important thing you'll be taking with you (along with your boots) so it's definitely worth it to spend $50-100 more to get a decent consumer grade backpack instead of cheaping out on army surplus because it looks tacticool
>>
I use lots of "army" gear on my long hunting trips. But we go so far in to the wild that we never see other people.

Not that guy but:

On page 99 of Captain W. E. Fairburn's seminal knife-fighting book called “Get Tough: How to Win In Hand-to-Hand Fighting” (pub. 1942) (fig.112), Fairburn provides the following information specific to “loss of consciousness in seconds” and “Death” specific to knife wounds:

Brachial Artery – Unconsciousness 14 seconds, death 1.5 minutes

Radial Artery – Unconsciousness 30 seconds, death 2 minutes

Carotid Artery – Unconsciousness 5 seconds, death 12 seconds

Subclavian Artery – Unconsciousness 2 seconds, death 3.5 seconds

Heart – Unconsciousness instantaneous, death 3 seconds

Just the backpack should be fine.

>>
>>930347
600D will likely be stronger.

For textile motorcycle gear you want 1000D on high wear / impact zones (preferably the whole garment is 1000D) and 600D is the bare minimum for the rest of the garment to keep it held together in the event of a crash.
>>
>>932399
As an addendum, you can have a backpack that's made of 1000D fabric that still falls apart if the stitching is bad.
>>
>>932082
wait whut? how do you get your gear for so cheap? also- water filter for $75?
>how do you get these sweet deals?
>>
As everybody says, who gives a fuck.
But too much focus on ""camo"" or otherwise ""surivialist"" gear makes you look like a filthy casual or a complete rookie.
On the other side, with experience comes the "who gives a fuck", You could be wearing a fucking spongebob backpack (though that'd be a stupid idea) without worrying about others looking.
On the other side, a spongebob backpack would be fine, it'd say "I don't give a fuck" while a bunch of camo gear says "I just want to fit in I have no friends"

Nah but it's probably extreme overkill for your use (read: heavy as fuck), not to mention usually about a decade behind in terms of features/ergonomics.

I'm guessing your concern is that someone might assume you're up to no good and call authorities on you?

I've been homeless/traveling for many years and only had this happen a couple times. Personally I'd rather get strange looks and have to talk to police occasionally than wear clothes or gear that I wouldn't normally use. I have always used surplus or milspec gear (pic related, current pack) because it's substantially more durable for my needs - I don't want some ultralight REI pack that could rip apart from simply walking through the brush. I need something that I can live out of for years at a time. As for clothing I keep full camo because I often need to remain unseen. Society doesn't like the homeless, even when we're staying out of the way of normal folks.

I think the same goes for 'preppers'. If you're training for a SHTF situation then you would most likely be using military gear and clothing. Some people believe it's better to use civilian gear to keep a lower profile but I'd rather just stay out of sight as much as possible. If the only reason you want milspec gear is because you're one of those call-of-duty-playing types and you just think it looks cool but have no intention of training for a grueling real-world scenario then I'd say you'd be giving the rest of us a bad name.
