I have a stupid question. How to properly dig a hole?
Many schema for military style trenches and the like show very square cut sides. Every time I start to shovel up dirt however, the banks are continually eroding and it is an endless headache. A square surface seems essentially impossible. Is there a trick to doing this?

The soil type in your area requires a different method of digging a hole and shoring up the sides. Where I live, there's almost nothing but clay. I can dig complex patterns into overhanging walls and it will last until the first hard rain or 5.

Depends in the soil. If its loose or sandy it will cave in as you get deeper.
Only early stage trenches have dirt walls.
My military uses sandbags, sheets of corugated steel and 6 foot steel pickets to fortify the walls against cave in's

When doing serious digging i'd recommend more than just a shovel. It's good to have a grub hoe with a pick end as well for rock and sod removal. As far as making square edges, what's your soil like anon? It's hard to help you without knowing.
what is a berm?

A small kind of hill or soil mound. For me (landscaper), they're mounds of soil surrounding areas like larger raised garden beds designed for privacy. Sometimes, they're topped off with rocks to support the structure and/or keep weeds out.

>Dig deep as you want the hole
>Setup reinforcements (2x6 work well)
>Scrape dirt back into place around the reinforcements
