I need a new cookstove for travel and trying to decide between butane and propane.
Any opinions here?
>>
>>918746
rocket stove obviously

personally, i'd get an adapter so I could use both fuels
>>
>>918746
if it's for travel in a vehicle just get a coleman propane stove. they are popular with the car camping crowd for a reason. 40 bucks, 2 burners, easy to clean and the green canisters can be found anywhere for cheap.
>>
>>918754
Any asian market has butane stoves for 20 bucks and the canisters are 4 for 5 bucks
>>
>>918746
>>918754
Coleman liquid stoves are better and easier to get fuel for.
>>
>>918775
Do they put out as many BTUs?
I had honestly not thought of this and I may even already own one.

I should mention that this is going in my van for a trip all over north and central america.
>>
>>918818

Butane is very easy to get in Latin America, for what it counts.

That chart is shit. What do the numbers even mean?

>energy per cubic meter

>>918818
Rocket Stove! You'll never run out of fuel in the middle of fucking nowhere then.
>>
>>918746
Car camping or ten mile hike-ins? Heating water for dehydrates or cooking bacon and eggs on direct heat? You use Cast iron or Ti-meme? Elevation? Temperature? These all effect what the best stove is for your particular purpose.

>Which is better; a hammer or a screw driver?
Are you driving nails or screws?
>>
>>918910
>Car camping or ten mile hike-ins?
Van dwelling actually.
This needs to cover much of my basic cooking
>>
>>918918
Oh, shit, okay.
I'd go propane and get a heater that runs off of it as well, so you only need one big (grill-type) tank. They're cheap to exchange and will last for a good long while. I've got good makeshift plans for a 1Gal sink system as well, if you want to build a full kitchenette. Unless you have the money to throw down for electric (and a solar build, which will cost less in the long run).
>>
>>918775
Not sure the power of the different Coleman models, but generally liquid fuels stoves are the go to stove for high energy output for backpacking stoves. Perfect if you want to turn a hunk of snow into boiling water.

There are a few brands that make burners capable of using most liquid fuels from diesel to kerosene to white gas. Diesel is not preferred though and will wreak havok on your diffuser with habitual use.

What are you looking for in the stove? Low weight, size, temperature control (simmering), high power, stability, durability, reliability, versatility, ease of use, etc...

Isn't a ten mile hike-in still car camping? It only takes like an hour to run back to the car within that range.
>>
>>918746
Dang it bobby, I tell you what: taste meat not the heat. That's why I sell propane and propane accessories.

Ok, there are various levels to commit to, largely based on use and convienence.

Starting small:

MSR Pocket Rocket with MSR Titan Kettle.

EASILY the most miles under it, my lightest "go to" hiking rig.

Gas One Compact:

I cannot tell you how much I love this portable stove! Cartridges are ~$2/ea, far less than the 1# propane "green bottles".

Which, for reasons, I VOWED YEARS AGO, to never buy another!

A true Rocket Stove, by Stovetec:
Excellent quality! Far better than "the other guys", which I had, but arrived dented out of the box. I figured, ok, I was just going to use it anyway... but when my excellent Stovetec double walled pot didn'really fit properly, back it went for the Stovetec. Much nicer.

A whole nuther level:
Q-1200 with 1 gallon propane tanks.

You might get static from refill attendants if you have the "petal" valve handle (connected) vs. the "triangle" valve handle OVD valve. So look for the newer version tank valve.

Else, a GREAT compact grill. Next size up is the Weber Q-2200, but I wanted the smaller version for travel, that's why I paid a bit more for the 1g vs. 5g tanks.

By master your fuel source, I mean own it.

Bulk on-line gets these at less than $2/ea. Compare that to the green 1# or "Primus" type isobutane at $5/ea.

>own it and control it

By control I mean pic related. With special adapters:

I can refill Lindal valve "Primus" type containers from $2 butane cartridges.

Transfer isobutane from Lindal valve to Lindal valve container. (Mounted)

Adapt Lindal valve appliances to butane cartridges. (Orange)

Adapt Lindal valve appliances to 1# propane bottles. (Silver)

Plus a few other combos that lend to controlling my consumable fuel sources (vs renewable, like wood).
