>tfw perfect day to be outside fishin

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just did a trout one.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Best reel I can get for less than 100$?
Should I be aiming for reels w/o any plastic hardware?

I just want something that will last for a while, it doesnt need to be any good besides that. Websites with reviews seem to say there are tons of options, maybe that's true and I should just pick one of the popular models but I dont trust the reviews

I was gonna say Lew's has a handful for <$100 and they seem decent. But I really like how the Abus feel while palming them and even that $60 SilverMax hasn't given me any issues in the two years I've had it.

It's worth checking out the Bass Pro reels too. I reccommend playing around with a couple different ones in a store and see what feels good.
Or search around and see if you can find a Revo S for ~$100 and buy it.
>>
>>916150
I've bought some nice Abus in flea markets for $10-$20 and fixed them up. Usually $10 in parts will do it. My current reel is a Ambassidor 5000 that I got for $10 and fixed it with a $3 part. As long as they aren't rusted or corroded to shit youd be ok.

Anyone from Southern Florida want to answer a question?
I'm going to the St. Petersburg area over spring break and I want to fly fish the freshwater but dont want to pay for the nonres licence. Does Fish and Game actually patrol and check? Is it absolutely necessary?

pic is Montana Brook Trout
>>
>>916176
I'm sure it's like everywhere else and you could get checked at a popular spot. But you could still buy a daily or 5-day oe whatever they have and it will be reasonable. Chances of getting checked at most spots are probably slim but the consequences of getting caught without the license are rough.

So...like half of Pepsi's yearly tackle fund. Still well worth it.

literally any medium action 7ft spinning rod. anything that's between noodle and catfish sensitivity wise works for this kind of fishing. I use some old kunnan glass rods for that style of fishing.
>>
>>916253
You like medium rods for that? I tend to like really fast rods for that stuff because with the braid I can feel exactly what the bait is doing. And then medium action rods feel good for spinners and stuff where you can rip them around and they end up with a more smooth and natural look.

But it's the same thing I always say about rods- so much is preference. I would just end up reccommending a fast actuon medium weight rod like that Vendetta since it is fast enough to give decent little twitches but slow enough to feel good ripping other hardbaits across the lake.
>>
>>916260
I do a lot of my rod and reel fishing in rivers that hold trout and shoal bass. The medium helps work the fish closer to me and keeps the trout from shaking the hook. the sensitivity is okay for jigs and shallow cranks in the 1/8-1/32 range and they toss real nice on 6lb mono

It's also sticking your hand in to a hole to rip out a catfish (noodling) or an extra slow action rod usually for trout fishing that allows for use of lighter line/smaller hooks without the fish shaking the hook or breaking the line
>>
>>916331
Noodle is a device, noodling is a technique.

Just remove one of the stands for wider access for the fuck huge reels.
>>
>>916363
>>916351
Well what is a rod? It's a pole with eye guides and a reel seat
And what is a screw? Its basically a nail with a slot and threads.
A rod and a pole both do the sAme job. A nail and a screw both do the sAme job- rods and poles both help you catch fish, nails and screws both hold wood together. A rod can be used just to dip a bait in the water with no use of the reel, and a screw can be smacked in to a piece of wood with a hammer, but that doesn't make the screw a nail or the rod a pole.
Where is the anslogy bad?

Anything rendered to it's simplest form barely resembles it's self.
A motorcycle in its simplest form is a weed whacker engine in a bicycle. A boat in its simplest form is a few logs tied together. Metal in its simplest form is angry surfer music. And we distinguish these simplest forms as separate things, mopeds and rafts. While a moped is a type of motorcycle, is a Harley a moped? While a raft Is a boat, is a boat a raft? No, it's not. And if you said "look at my motorcycle" while pointing at a moped, or said "let's go out on my boat" while pointing at a raft, everyone would think you're an idiot because of the clear differences. So why is it okay to say "look at my pole?" And point at a fishing rod.

You gotta scope out little lakes and ponds in commercial, industrial, and residential areas that aren't overfished. They are normally smaller where it is easy to fish from shore plus they keep the grass cut so you aren't walking through tall ass shrubs.

I see no good reason to fuss with a screw or plug.

And I don't care if the hole lets sand and stuff into the reel - the point of this reel is that it's a tank and easy as hell to disassemble and clean. Plus the hole itself will let me dunk it to rinse debris out without really worrying. If it ends up rusting which it won't if I take care of it who cares it was 40$ on eBay lol

Paint
>stripped it with aircraft paint remover
>sanded it and wiped it down with alcohol
>used aluminum primer and let it dry for 3 days, don't use regular primer
>forgot to sand the primer like an idiot and sprayed it with 3 layers of automotive paint, let it dry for a week
>sprayed it with 2 layers of automotive gloss clear coat

Slots
>made a template with graph paper and taped it on to the sides
>drilled a hole on the top and bottom of each slot, used a dremel to cut between them
>filed them clean
>used a drill for the bottom holes.

Bailess conversion
>used a dremel to cut the bail close to the roller
>used a dremel sanding drum to shape it and make it round
>finished it off with a good sanding
>>
>>916585
In the spool there is none, I thought the slots were going to.be in the main body with the gears and grease. In that situation, the advantage is you don't have sand grinding in the gears till they're smooth. I admit that where the slots are plugs are worthless. I admit I read wrong. But if you drill a hole in the main body of the reel sand will kill it
>>
>>916588
Maybe a modern reel. I'll post a pic of the internals on the main body. I seriously doubt sand could fuck it up. A rock, sure, but this thing has giant thick as fuck machined gears. And will be packed completely full of marine
grease - so it shouldn't need any drain holes

But ya I see what you're saying

>>916587
TY mate. Did you just have a sprayer around? Idk if it's worth grabbing one for one project. How awful would doing it by hand turn out
>>
>>916588
There's no point in that either. The side plate has literally one large flathead screw that can be taken off with a coin.
>>
>>916590
All I'm saying is I thought someone wanted to.cut slots in the body of the reel, for some reason or another, and I was saying open holes to the inner workings of the reel was a bad idea

Anyone have experience with these buzz plug things? It looks cool so I got one.
>>
>>916695
That's cool. I feel like regular buzzbaits can be too big of a target when the bass aren't super feisty so that may help in that situation.
>>
>>916695
I'm betting the designer of that lure was high or drunk and happened to think "dude, what if I switch the hook and blade to the other sides?"
>>
>>916696
You can buy some wire and buzz bait blades in many sizes. Then you can make all sorts of sizes and styles.
>>
>>916696
my thing is i hate how fast i have to rip a buxzz bait, allegedly this will stay at a float even while still, so the bas dont have to do a huge chase to get it or if they miss it. i can reel it slower, pause it, whatever, and i think it will work. i got it in black specifically for morning and evening.
>>
>>916699
Different buzzbaits run at different speeds too. Get one with a fat blade and run it on braid and you can go pretty slow. But between the speed and the shape of buzzbaits, you do end up with a lot of near misses.

You could do that on a M with Fast or even X-Fast action for sure. Or a MH with Med-Fast action and that will have a similar feeling at the tip as the faster M but will have a bit more backbone if you land something heavy.

You better get a 300yd spool of 20lb braid for that 4500 because that fucker will hold a ton of line. Might even take more because lots of those saltwater spinning reels have deep spools and hold a lot of line.

Most times you have to have a dressed hook for bass and a bare hook for trout. That is the main difference for inline spinners.

>>916980
>>916800
Bass will hit bare hooks on inlines too. Almost any predatory fish will hit basically the same lures but different sizes and some prefer different colors but a natural gold will always work.

>>917016
Yeah that shit sucks. That's also why I refuse to go above Size 10 Rapalas for bass. They add the 3rd treble hook for Size 11+ and they get caught in everything including the fish's body and face.
>>
>>916983
Any fish will hit any lure. However, the best inline lures are dressed hooks. It is the difference between getting 5 bass a day and 20 bass a day if you want to use a poor example.
>>
>>917016
>>917039
I'm literally in the process of designing and pricing a light weight, stainless steel "chainmail" fishing net using 1" split rings. The cheapest I can find is about $0.16 per ring. Thus, it'd cost about $50 for an adequately-sized net for average-sized bass I think.

As much as I search, I can only find fetish clothing when searching for a net of this type on google. Anyone else have luck finding such a net online? Finding SS cable "netting" is easy enough.

>>917039
You can remove extra hooks or even replace them with single hooks. If you replace the treble hooks with weedless hooks, they should never hook the fish outside the mouth and will hook your nets far less. You may need some split rings, if the lures don't already have them. In that case, cut off the eye of the original hook and replace it with a split ring.
>>
>>917039
Just take the middle one off mang

>>917047

>>
>>917066
They strike from diffetent angles. Predators will often come from deeper down and strike baitfish near the surface so that middle treble helps. You can always swap out hooks but you will eventually miss a fish you woulda landed with trebles.

>>917048
That will rub my 'tism the wrong way
>>
>>917079
Yeah looks like a small brown
Relitivley young they look like that

A Brooke of that size would have grown out of those colors by now plus anything caught this time of year would probably still have wicked spawning colors

Though different strains of browns look different at different ages

Courtlands are pretty plain and average

Seefs grow stupid fast but don't have the best colors

Plus there can always be differences within the species depending on hatchery vs native fish
Plus where shit lived also can change its coloration slot

Plus some hatcheries feed their fish certain feed which can improve coloration etc ( though ive only ever seen it used on larger fish )

Need recommendations on cheap reels

I'm totally setting up my ice fishing shit for this upcoming year and I'm going to need to buy maybe half a dozen reels

As for where to find them cheaper, Idrk, It looks like the older models go for around $20-$25 so maybe you could look into that, If it were me Id pay the extra $5 to not have that faggy light blue colored spool though.
>>
>>917261
I'd have no issue buying one of the new ones for $30 but if I'm going to buy half a dozen of them that's $180 and the rods I'm going to be putting them on are only $10 each anyways

I have some cheapy ice fishing reels but id like something more solid

shimanosedona fec 2000 and 1000 are like $16-$18 on amazon right now. I have no idea what's the C part at the end of the FE is for though. Sedona in generally is supposed to be a tier higher than sienna reels though.
>>

I like to have a handful of rods with different stuff tied on with me so I don't always have to untie and retie

Plus I often fish 2 rods at once in 2 holes side by side with different offerings to find out what's wanted

Also going to have some of the rods on homemade jawjackers when I feel like fishing for walleye or bass

Also I help teach a kids ice fishing class and sometimes I have to lend out rods

That sucks. Mine does make a little hum but nothing where there is any resistance or issues. And obviously it isn't wearing out since I use that reel a lot and still no problems.

I still want to grab another one of those Okumas some day. Might just get a 35 or if they go on sale again, grab like a 10, another 25, and a 35 because I like them so much. And that 25 is the perfect size for 10lb-15lb braid and going for anything from panfish to larger bass. The reels are just butter smooth and they look good as well. I definitely prefer that to the Sienna.
>>
>>917285
It doesn't inhibit its ability to spin and I can get solid 10 spins if I do a fast turn and let it spin on its own but that noise it makes and wobbling triggers me a lot

Idk what the wobbling could be. Maybe it got bent somehow either in the shipping or at the store or you bent it without knowing. Did you get the combo or just the reel? If it is newer, I would send that shit to Abu and get a new one.

Or just wait for the Stratus V to go on sale for $29 like they always do and grab one.
>>
>>917290
Those reels look sweet too. I would consider it if I wanted to drop that kind of money on a spinning reel.

Who was it that bought the W&M reel for $60 on that flash sale? I still kinda regret not getting one of those.
>>
>>917291
I bought it by itself from Shitmart. It was in the plastic packaging so I dont really so how it could get bent but maybe idrk.

Ive had it since the summer, only thing wrong with it is a few small scratches on the shitty little chrome piece on the bottom of it. Think they'd let me return it or something?
>>
>>917297
It probably has a 1yr warranty through Abu so you would have to send it to them. But Walmart is pretty lenient so maybe you could go in there and say you got it for Xmas and threw away the packaging and used it for the first time and noticed it was messed up. I bet they would let you exchange it.
>>
>>917304
hmm.. Might have to give this a shot in a few days. Ill tell them I took it ice fishing and its garbage. Worst that could happen is they say no.
>>
>>917305
They don't give a fuck. Everybody will be returning stuff after Xmas. Especially if you say you just want to exchange it for something else, 99% chance they will do it.

And if they don't have anything good in the store, get store credit on a gift card and use it on Walmart's website. They have tons of shit on there.

Story Tiem:
>be me, dumb bored kid in HS on a Saturday night with friends
>have a brilliant idea, everybody pitches in a few $$ and we go to Walmart and buy a $40 microwave
>bring it back to my house, cook anything and everything that is supposed to be cool or bad to put in a microwave
>aluminum foil, CDs, marshmallows, whole eggs, etc
>by the end, microwave is totally shot
>put bag of popcorn in it and it takes 10min to pop one kernel
>microwave is full of marsmallow, bits of CD, and chunks of egg
>box it back up, bring it to Walmart saying it stopped working
>they give us our cash back
>>
>>917312
lel, Ill exchange it for a sienna and be a happy lad.

Only problem Is the Cardinal has a whole spool of 6 pound braid that I gotta figure out how to get off without wrecking it
>>
>>917315
You have an extra reel with no line on it? I like to do that on this old Quantum reel I have if I need to transfer line like that. Otherwise just hand spool it onto whatever but it takes a minute to move 150yds of line.
>>
>>917321
I tried that one time. Lets just say I ended up throwing out almost an entire new spool a #30 braid because it was so tangled. Im just gunna do it by hand, hopefully it doesnt take forever
>>
>>917073
Lifetime =/= 5-10 years.

I'd rather pay $200 for something I can pass down than $50 for something I'll have to pay $50 again for when it breaks in the next 20 years.
>>
>>917330
I feel the exact same way. This was the first reel I strayed away from that concept because I cant accept paying a lot for a small reel that I will only use to perch fish. At lease the sienna should hold up for a while if they let me swap it
>>
>>917330
>>917333
oh whoops I just saw the (you) and assumed you were talking about the reel.

That net was only like $25 which is less than I pay for some higher end lures. If and when it breaks ll just get a new one
>>
>>917330
Fuck it, if a net lasts for 20yrs, I'm straight.

>>917333
Checked.

And even cheaper reels will normally last bretty gud as long as they come from a good company and aren't plastic. I would be more concerned about the $500 reel with all the carbon fiber parts not lasting as long as the $60 President. But if you buy a $1000 solid metal conventional reel, that fucker should last a long time.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of large ocean fish that you're not even allowed to keep. I'm not exactly sure on these because I don't live on the ocean or fish salwater ever, but Goliath Groupers and Sawfish come to mind. I don't think you're allowed to keep either.

Caught my first ever fish through the ice today! What a blast. Felt like a monster on my little ultralight rod. She's a dink but one of the most beautiful fish I've ever caught in my eyes. I don't know why I never went sooner. I'll never go another winter without catching a fish again.

Only once in the past 50 years has it been cold enough for long enough to allow people onto the local lake. The ice was 9 inches thick. People were driving 4-wheelers around on it and shit. It was making making creaking and cracking sounds the entire time, but never broke.

Most of the winters it may get -40F but a few days later it'll be in the 40F-50F range. Normally the thickest ice is 3-4 inches because of such fluctuations.

thats really weird. but theyre pretty. also, im amazed how many people ive talked to who fly fish and dont have anything below size 16 or 18. in ohio at least, all our midge larvae and mayfly nymphs are tiny as shit, ive never seen a mayfly nymph in any creek river or lake that could possibly be bigger than size 16.
>>
>>917513
down south and 8 months of the year i'm fishing big flies but nov-feb i usually stick to stuff below 16. midges are often below 20 with the bigger stuff being peach eggs. i'll sometimes throw some bigger flies if there's a hatch and i'm running bluelines for brookies

come summer i'm keying in mostly on native river bass and stripers i'll be pulling size 2 articulated streamers on the 8wt and fatty size 12-8 foam terrestrials and hoppers on the 3. it's warmed up a bit so i may pull out some bigger red ant patterns next time i hit the water.
>>
>>917516
aye. trout ae super limited here in ohio, so i spend mosst of my time chasing bass carp and pike on my 8 weight. ive yet to land a carp or hook in to a pike though
>>

seems like ohio is oddly not a very out state. i've got a river ten minutes from my house in atlanta that i can go to and catch browns, bows, stripers, 3 species of black bass, and large panfish year round. never bothered going for carp. we've got two species of small pike in small numbers but i've never hooked into one.

Beginner question,

How the fuck do you guys fish freshwater lakes that are riddled with nothing but weeds/logs? There's this lake I've been hitting up, going to go there this morning as well.

The fish bite there, however, the biggest pain in the ass is fishing through the weeds and logs that are fucking everywhere.

Even with a typical weedless set-up on a lizard/worm, I drag a plethora of fucking shit that I have to scrape off the bait. It's not a big deal but jesus it's annoying doing it every time I throw it out. When I reel a fish in, it's almost entirely covered in shit.

Not only that but if I ever want to wacky rig something I get caught up on sticks/logs, so that's out of the question for me. Which is a shame because that's what I get the most fish on.

TL;DR: Any way easy way to avoid hook getting snagged on logs?

Eh you are kinda limited in lure choices if you can't find any clear spots unfortunately. Braid helps in those lakes because you can still drag fish and lures out of the weeds. I like to cast Texas rigs out past the weeds, retrieve them slowly right to the edge of the weeds, and then just rip it across the top of the weeds so I don't get caught up. Those Storm and Tsunami swimbaits with the single hook on the top work bretty gud in those spots too, they don't hang up much.
>>
>>917593
When you're fishing around logs be gentle when you feel the lure bumping into them. i think it helps a lot with snags if you aren't slamming the lure into the logs lol.

For fishing over grass I like weightless senkos, chatter baits, lipless cranks, and top water.

Looking for anyone who ice fishes
I'm in need of rod recommendations
Looking for a relitivley short (24-27 inch)
Somewhat stiff but still flexible rod to use with my jawjackers

they're all pretty similar. Just go to the nearest place that has a decent brand selections and see how they feel in your hand. My personal preference is a 27" medium light
>>

For jawjackers use?

I have jigging rods but need to find some for my jawjackers
>>
>>917660
At what point is it no longer fishing? I mean we have bait casting devices, hooking devices, and reeling in devices. We could literately hook this stuff to a raspberry pi and have it do everything for us while we sit back, drink beer, and shitpost.

Jawjackers are best used with med and med-heavy rods. Too light and they won't set the hook properly.

Oh carp are fun I have a hard time getting them to take the initial bite but they fight hard. I've heard then called golden bones and compared to steelhead. It's not the same kind of fight but it's hard, it's like if you tied a rope to a garbage truck, where the others are like you tied off to an f1 car. Same power, different application of force
And all Ohio has is deer and steelhead, other than that it's worthless.

I find that chumming with bread balls works really well. Doubly so if the area is a tourism spot where people toss bread to them.

In Ohio there's the spillway at Pymatuning Reservoir on the Ohio/Pennsylvanian boarder.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbB7myFQb7s

They enter and exit that spill way on the other side of the road where you can fish for them and catfish.

Carp are bottom feeders. They eat plants, larva, worms, invertebrates of all kinds. Red worms, drifting plant matter, and crayfish patterns are usually the best. Corn, dogfood, and bread patterns exist and work well in areas where carp are familiar with those things.

I go to northern Canada every year for Pike. They are definitely good eating but usually we try and get a few walleye for eating and release all the Pike since usually all the places you Pike fish up there have tons of big (better eating and easier to clean) walleye. They're pretty easy to catch too, finding big ones on the other hand is not

Na a big Pike isn't going to attack and kid or a dog lol. The monster's are territorial but they usually roam around big deep areas of water. And like that one anon said you need a leader, whether it be steel or fluorocarbon.

My favorite Pike attacks are when you arnt even trying to catch one and you have a few feet of line out and your just running your lure back in forth by the side of the boat when your changing locations and one will come up and slam it right there 2 feet away from you. It'll get your blood pumping for sure
>>
>>917875
Yeah the Sellus rods are a bit heavy without being super sensitive. Those Lightning Rod Shocks are just great all-around rods. They remind be of a $100+ Abu like the Veritas.

Maybe I will convert some more people who thought Ugly Stiks were the end-all of rods <$70. Even if you wanted to go a little more expensive for your next rod, those Fenwick Eagles feel nice and Dick's has like $10 rebates on them a ton although I'm too lazy to mail it in for $10.

This is the standard method for reeling in for me. I'll do a figure eight in the water for about 30 seconds. It has resulted in many strikes and catches.
>>
>>917875
If you find one get a no. 8 blackout. They're very good rods. I've seen some people say they haven't held up, but I've had mine for a good while now and it's still going strong so I don't know what their problem is. They were $80, but they stopped making them so you might be able to find a good deal on one.

so i caught my first carp today, but i'm not sure if i did it legally. went out lookin for bass but the swamp i usually fish was frozen over completely. Hiked down farther and found this stream type area and saw a school of like 12 big carp moving around beneath the surface. didnt have any sort of carp bait with me so i just tied on a treble hook and threw it at them. to my suprise i managed to snag a 20 something pounder. and then another, and another.
was crazy fun fighting them and pulling them in but i feel kind of bad about it in retrospect. hook tore a big scale off a few of them and one was bleeding a bit. not sure how fragile carp are. i think they are an invasive species here, my state is open season no limit year round, but i dont like killing a fish if i'm not going to eat it.
should i feel bad bros? didnt really think about it at the time, just wanted to catch a fish.

There is one lake I have been to where there are signs saying specifically not to target the carp there and to release them if you do catch them.
