Get a jet butane lighter and just grab a coal to use as a starter. Once you get one going, pile them up and the others will soon take. Just add a bit of air pressure.

I just use newspaper to start mine and have never had an issue.

Sometimes I just cook food right over a chimney, Absolutely insane heat flows out the top so they are good for flash roasting kabobs or even just putting a grill grate right over.
