I stop at a vending machine that are at shelters every 5 miles.

This isn't man vs wild. This is America. You're never too far from a vending machine or road on trails here.

A flask and a drop counter with bleach will suffice.

2 drops of bleach every liter of water (8 drops
every gallon) will disinfect water after 20 minutes.

You can filter the water through a natural filter (coal, sand, grass) or through a shemagh / bandana, then boil it and finally add 2 drops of bleach per liter and it will be as good as tap water.

A small flask of 250cc will let you purify around 2500 liters of water.

i love visiting usa and the signs that warn you that there won't be a gas station for FIFTY WHOLE MILES or something

Sawyer mini.

It's only a little more expensive than LifeStraw but much more convenient (drinking straw, cleaning syringe, pouch, can be screwed on a soda bootle) and can filter a lot more water.

Other than that water purification tablets if you don't mind the taste.

How long is long for you? 1 month? 6 months? 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
>>

And get cancer too
>>
>>910768
why would you drink from the loo?
>>
>>911768
Thats the ammount of sodium hypochlorite thats used worldwide for tap water balong with some other chemicals like fluoride.

If you drink tap water youll be drinking water with bleach on it.

yes. boiling kills everything. but it tastes flat.

filters miss viruses so some people filter then treat.with bleach or iodine. bleach or iodine alone don't always kill protazoa unless you let it sit. they pretty much all get rid of bacteria.

People there must feel great when they find a spot to camp where they don't see someone's backyard.

+1 for gravity. i used to be gung-ho about the sawyer mini, but it's really only practical for a couple people for a couple nights when you'll only be needing 2-3 liters per person per day. if it's hot, or buggy, or you have more than a couple people you'll get real sick of squeezing those bags real quick.

>>911937
viruses are generally not an issue for people in areas with the money and leisure time to go /out/. most don't survive outside a host in water very long, and any reputable filter will keep out bacteria and protozoa. no funny taste, no waiting.
>>
geiggerrig with a pair of virus filters, good for 100 gallons each i think. prestrain with a 1 micron bag filter (not 100% 1 micron though so not enough for the critters sadly)

Add to that a bottle of polar pure iodine crystals good for up to another 500 gallons. Can also use it to treat wounds and maybe flood the thyroid in a nuclear fallout situation, though Im not sure.

And a pot for backup if either of those fail
>>
>>912029
I used a Sawyer mini in a gravity feed system for several short trips last year, and then for three straight months while hitchhiking this year. They're pretty awesome, actually.

That said, I'm switching to bleach for short trips (under two weeks), since a dropper is so much smaller and lighter.
>>
>>910768
>What kind of water treatment equipment you guys recommend for a long trip?

Chlo-Floc tablets.
A 1qt canteen
A container that can boil

I don't see a filter as worth the weight and space except as a survival item you might keep in a car or something.
>>
What is the opinion on micropur tabs?
>>
>>912086
Not trying to poke holes, but it depends on the type of trip. If you're in a set location where boiling unlimited available water and allowing it to cool over time is a possibility, that's one thing; if you're traveling and can't stop to cook your water each time you refill it (and I've been at six quarts per day on some trips), that could prove to be a huge burden on time, fuel and energy.

I'm just saying that it's like asking if a hammer or saw is a better tool; it depends on what you're trying to get done.
>>
Bottle a bunch of nice clear creek water, go back home, drink it for a while

Bottle a bunch of river water, do the same

Bottle a bunch of clear lake water, do the same

Bottle a bunch of gross lake water, do the same

Bottle a bunch of water from a muddy road, do the same

Bottle a bunch of swamp water, do the same

Congrats, you now have immunity to all water diseases and no longer need a water filter or need to boil water
>>
>>910876
Ive got no proof or im reading the map wrong but that doesnt look right. 500m is a super short distance, i dont really believe youll always be within .5km everywhere on te east coast or middle america

Meanwhile residents in India can drink the tap water fine yet travelers from more filtered places can't. Immunity is a real thing retard, what do you think humans did before we had pots and fire. We just drank from the fucking water. Rebuild your immunity and you'll be fine.

it just means road. These could be service roads or old abandoned roads miles from even a small town. I wonder if this map counts in use and abandoned rails too.

You can't build immunity to Giardia. That's like trying to build immunity to bears by getting mauled once a week.

>>912934
It should only be state roads still in use and being maintained by the state. Of course, since the map was made there may be some that are no longer in that category as well as new ones not listed that were created since.
>>
>>912972
Whats wrong with a shemagh? Its just a bigger bandana.
A square piece of cloth like the bandana but only bigger, its only a matter of prefference and the area you are visiting.
