This is a bit of a sore subject for me. My GF went up there with her friends to protest for a week and camp out. It was colder than they expected and her friends noped the fuck out and turned back. My GF would have none of it and decided to tough it out then hitch back. She got taken in by an older native guy and has been sleeping in his van. I am pretty uncomfortable with the whole situation to tell you the truth :(
>>
the Indians only turned down the govt initially because they didn't offer enough money. And now they're mad when it's not even on their land. The whole "Indian sacred grounds" nonsense is silly.

I don't like pipelines at all but I don't really give a fuck about this one specifically. It's now become a meme like Occupy where leftists go camp and socialize and do nothing.

One of the multiple pipelines in the us is being boycotted. Initially it went through native land? But then they moved it but natives are still saying its their land, something about a lake they claim is holy, drinking water ect. >>
>>906259
Because we live in the real world where solar and wind and any other "renewable" aren't enough to meet our energy demands. One day the renewables may be cheap enough without subsidies that we can rely on them en masse, but until then, if you believe we have a "carbon" problem, then you should support the strong baseload tried and true non carbon fuel source that already comprises like a quarter of the US' energy generation.

>but spoopy nuclear waste
We keep it in casks until we have enough that the need to reprocess is greater than our desire to be a "good" example by not reprocessing. Reprocessing gives us even more fuel (or a bigger stockpile if we want).

I don't get it, honestly. This isn't the first pipeline to cross under the Missouri. It's not even the first to cross under the Missouri in that area. Blocking the pipeline will either cause it to be rerouted or cause the oil to be sent by train instead. These are net neutral and net negative in terms of environmental impact relative to building the pipeline as planned, respectively.

I'm all for keeping the oil in the ground and transitioning to carbon-neutral energy sources. I'm all for protecting water. I just don't see how this accomplishes either. Pushing for more stringent monitoring for leaks on the pipeline or something would have made far more sense.

It's absolutely both a property issue and an environmental issue. Its about the people in an area having a choice in whether or not a potentially hazardous, certainly polluting pipeline can be built near them.
Pipelines burst, not all the time, and many don't, but oil spills are catastrophic enough that a community should have the right to avoid the risk altogether.
The DAP may never malfunction, but if it ever does, it is just upriver from Standing Rock and who's ecosystem would be ruined.

it's funny how clueless and passionate people are about transportation in general

the ironing is that more oil was spilled by protestors driving up from as far away as the west coast than will likely ever breach from a modern pipe

also anywhere there is roads (standing rock for example) there are culverts and ditches and the possibility of tanker truck crashing and spilling 10 000 gallons+ of whatever into wherever

as someone who worked in oil and gas and now in environmental I can say, the amount of smaller pipeline spills you never hear about is absolutely insane. Fucking all the time. That being said, most of the ones these days seem to get attended to in some fashion. The old ones, someone starts digging and then they find oil everywhere in the ground from 50 years ago. Then the good thing is someone tends to address it and not just rebury it these days.

But honestly, the oil is just going to go by train or truck anyway and there are a lot of spills that way too when there are accidents. If it was me, I'd have a stipulation in there that they have to line the entire right of way of the pipeline with clay to minimize the spread of any leakage and make cleanup easier. Then there should be special safety measures in place near an body of water to put any accidental spill at the absolute minimum risk. Proper training and empowerment in regard to response is a biggie.

That's the reality of the situation. If the tribe really cared about "their" land, they wouldn't be purely shekel begging. If the protesters really cared about the tribe they wouldn't be illegally camping and being melodramatic on Twitter. Reservations are basically 3rd world countries and that isn't the fault of pipelines. If the protesters really cared about oil, they wouldn't be ILLEGALLY CAMPING AND BEING MELODRAMATIC ON TWITTER. These idiots are just being annoying until other people have to take action. Hopefully that action is beating them down and throwing them out of the state and not trying to appease these morons with some dumb compromise that just costs the tax payers a bunch of money. Which I guarantee that's what will happen. We're going to end up paying for the pipeline being moved slightly to the left because some idiots stomped their feet like children.

It's couldn't leak into the river if they actively tried.

I just got back after being out there for three and a half weeks. Being a long time Earth First!er, amongst other things, and having connections on the inside, I jumped right into Red Warrior camp, which was the more militant camp on the frontlines.

It was amazing and incredibly intense at times. The water spraying and less lethal weapons hurt a lot of our people on the 20th and more were arrested in an action following in Bismark. We tried to take Turtle Island, the site where drilling is taking place on (no)Thanks(no)giving but were stopped by main camp peace police.

I returned from camp recently, after the disbanding of Red Warrior. This happened due to the main camp, which has become more and more "peaceful prayer" only pushy. On the 24th, when we tried to take HWY 1806, peace police from main camp came & told people an (un-named) elder had said this action was unsanctioned & told people to leave.

This caused many people to leave and the resulting large number of police came to Turtle Island, which we had gotten to via boats and a bridge we built on site, during the action. With the large number of cops arrived with pepper spray, tear gas, rifles with rubber bullets and live rounds, etc. we were unable to advance.

On the 4th, a large number of vetrans came in. They did one march, then largely stopped contributing to camp, sucking up resources in the freezing cold. An influx of tourists, unprepared for the -10 degree temps and -30 degree windchills also hit main camp hard. When the drilling post-ponement announced, the media hailed the vetrans as heroes, largely ignoring the ongoing struggle of frontline warriors. This was just another extension of imperialism. As one woman in Red Warrior said, "Thank God for the US military, coming in to save us poor little Indians."

In addition, DAPL Dave, tribal leader for the Sioux, put out a statement following the announcement that the drilling at Turtle Island must be temporarily halted, telling people, "it's time to go," thanking Obama, and saying he wants to re-work to healthy relations with police. The main camp responded by largely not leaving, showing that DAPL Dave does not speak for the camp and with Trump coming in, the unification of tribes at Sacred Stone and the resistance to DAPL is more needed than ever.

The actions of Red Warrior and other frontline warriors at camp, from lockdowns, to blockades, to heavy machinery destruction cost DAPL millions, to other actions brought huge publicity to camp and cost DAPL millions. Despite this, tribal leaders have turned to complete refusal to allow "non-prayerful" direct action and were obstructing actions. And so, Red Warrior disbanded last week.

Personally, I found this an incredibly amazing experience. It was a combination of comradery, building structures, planning and acting in acts of resistance, cooking, music, and community. It was all volunteer and you could do whatever you wanted. Food and camp gear was available via donations that came in and were cooked/distrubuted by the camp.

Waking up in my tent on the plains to people singing in main camp was one of my favorite things here.

During the second concert at Red Warrior, standing in the dim fire light, listening to and indigenous hip hop warrior rap militant lyrics from a car battery powered speaker, dancing with my comrades around me was another favorite moment.

Also, eating a ton of hunted food and bison was awesome.

The fights is not over and while the winter and the order of the Army Corps has stalled the pipeline, it will likely continue. When it does, we will return to fight. In the meantime, we will organize in our own communities and fight with other struggles. No compromise in defense of Mother Earth!

>On the 4th, a large number of vetrans came in. They did one march, then largely stopped contributing to camp, sucking up resources

People take veterans seriously and the impact on the media was HUGE when those guys went up there.

Also, what people really need there now is firewod, propane, wood stoves, and warm structures, such as tipis or yurts. There are tons of clothes already. Wool blankets would be good also.

If you donate cash, donate to the overflow camp, the Oceti Sakowin camp, which houses the about 900 or so people there now. The main camp, Sacred Stone already has a ton of donation money.

Image is from the arm of the woman who was blown up by police on the 20th.
>>
>>910888
>People take veterans seriously and the impact on the media was HUGE when those guys went up there.

Hence the problem. The indigenous warriors and other people there had been struggling intensly since April. I watched a young woman, a photographer, take a rubber bullet to the chest point blank by laughing police during a march. I watched people sprayed with water hoses during a peaceful march in 20 degree weather. The camp was built from a few tipis to thousands of people in months. The dedication of people there to work hard and to resistance the entire time was huge. This was also the largest unification of tribes in almost 100 years.

Despite this, aside from liberal news, the the struggle got almost an entire media blackout. It wasn't until vetrans came in that the news reported or the army corps acted. Not until the old armed force came, doing a simple march, that action happened.

This shows how deeply rooted in imperialism this country is. The voice of the people, the actions of the people are so easily ignored, unless of course they are military, police, politicians, or big money.

Also, as stated before, the vetrans, who largely came in unprepared, put a huge strain on the supplies and food of camp, which was highly damaging to the camp, as an extreme winter storm came in at the same time. Them being vetrans is not an excuse for coming in without the ability to be self sufficient and able to work at camp. To the ones who came in prepared, ready to work and fight for the struggle, props to them.

Im pretty sure you have that backwards. They originally had it, they fought and lost, so its "ours". Thats pretty much how it goes, not necessarily right or moral.

And saying "their pleasure only" implies any of the tribes could actually do something to make the US gov leave. They will most likely never be genocided again but the power dynamic hasnt changed at all since the 19th century.

Get people totalk about what exactly?
All this mess of a situation does is polarize people on their stances on property rights and environmental issues. This absolutely did not help a single person.
Allow me to explain.
The initial protest was never about environmental issues, it was a property issue. Mind you, the pipeline doesn't cross native American property unless you refer to an old treaty from over a century ago that says otherwise. I'm not clear on that though.

So, to garner support because of the lack of footing the Native Americans had, it was slowly transformed into an environmental issue and a Native American rights issue. By continually changing what the problem is, you start to get people to think you're lying to them, which is where people first started to question the protests.

So let's give the protestors the benefit of the doubt. What exactly is the environmental concerns here?
>The pipeline is set to destroy sacred land.
Not true, the pipeline runs under ground in the concerned area along side a pretty existing natural gas pipeline
>it runs under a source of drinking water and is a hazard to the people there
Maybe, but there are already hundreds of pipelines that run under water sources and very few have been at fault for contaminating shit. If anything, oil transported via truck and rail have caused more harm than pipelines ever have.
>but muh native American rights
This was delegitimized when it was decided nothing was running through their land

Cont 1/2
>>
2/2 cont
>>911234
So at this point, environmental concerns about pipelines are delegitimized and people who never cared about them in the first place all of a sudden support pipeline building because they feel lied to and are being told if they support the pipeline, they're oppressive. This is the mentality that got trump elected president.

On the other end of the spectrum, you get easily impressionable dumb asses who focus on this as a huge issue, when in reality, it has nothing to do with any of what they're concerned about. So they begin to eat up lies and base their opinions on pure emotion.

So this whole thing has accomplished dick. If you want people to start talking, focus on a real problem based in reality.

I am all for switching energy sources away from oil, but this bitching done by emotional retards is slowly creating a large group of people who won't listen because they're constantly called names and lied to. How else do you expect people to react? You think the talk and discussion is at all useful now?

Also, that picture is of a failed attempt from one of the protestors to rig an explosive according to investigators. Fuck off with your propaganda

>>

From an ecological point of view, solar is Satan.

First, they require rare hearths and that is not only a non renewable resource that will run out before oil, it also pollute a lot to dig it. Also, slavery. But manufacturers just have to use less rare hearth, right?

Then you have to actually make the solar panel. This kill the worker, but worse: all kind of chemicals are released in the environment. Hey, but we (not me, really, just you) just have to use less solar panels, right?

And then it is not over, because solar and wind only produce when it can and you don't want to wait 6 hours before turning the oven on. So it require batteries.

Think of a billion car batteries just for the upper American class. Think of a million billion car batteries for the entire world. Have to be changed every 10 years.

But we just have to use less batteries, right?

So, stop paying the electrical bill and wait a little, you will do your part.

>wasting this much effort on the environment of North Dakota

lel

ND houses SAC missile farms housing 400 Minuteman III silos with 2 to 3 russian warheads targeted per silo(that many is needed to kill reinforced hardened silos) fired from silos in eastern russia trying to bushwack SAC before they can fire back

30 minutes after russia opening fire 800-1200 warheads(240-360 Megatons at least total) would land on the Minuteman silos within the space of a few mins and the fallout would form an even bigger dead zone

FUN FACT:

The Europeans bought Manhattan from the Indians for roughly $14 dollars.

This is somehow considered a "steal" by those ignorant of monetary worth.

Had those Indians invested their $14 at 6% interest, they would have been able to buy back the entire island of Manhattan sometime in the late 1980's, early '90's.
