I want to strap my rod to my pack for hiking, but I don't want the line and etc to be caught on branches. Are there any affordable nylon cases designed for a broken down fishing rod?
>>
>>904302
There's a ton of them.

But you don't even really need one. Get a 2pc rod (or even 3+) and when not in use put the reel in your backpack and just strap the two rod sections to your bag however you want. If you want to go light, just get one of those rod socks and attach that to your pack.

And when you find a fishing spot, it takes 2min to put the reel on the rod, pull the line through the guides, and tie on a hook or lure.
>>
>>904307
I see, simple now that you mention it.

Carolina Skiff are trash for choppy waters. Even their v hulls are shit compared to other v hull boats. Only really good for a cheap center console for rivers and lakes. Maybe saltwater flats like Florida and Louisiana has but will break your back and knock your teeth out in choppy bays or oceans.

>The unique hull design of the DLV Series appeals to both the shallow water angler and the enthusiast who like to venture into deeper waters. The modified Tri-V hull design allow for a smooth, outstanding performance dry ride. Delivering peace of mind on the water and giving you more boat for less.
>Quality stainless steel components, plentiful storage space, wide open deck space, large front and rear fishing decks, rear cushion jump seats, console with an open face for mounting up to a 10" flush mount electronic screen and 3 stainless steel cup holders, stainless cooler seat frame with adjusting flip flop back rest and your choice of a bimini top or a T-top, give you a great boat for anything from a family excursion to a day of fishing.

>The DLX-Series flat-bottom skiffs can be used for work or play. The DLX can be used for almost anything. From a day of fishing, cruising or commercial boating, to search and recuse, filming or photography. The stable, durable and fuel efficient DLX can carry more weight further and faster using less horsepower. You could say the is like a pickup truck of the boating world. The DLX draws very little water, so getting back into the shallow areas isn’t an issue for the flatbottom skiff. The DLX-Series is a patented hull design with bow splash guards to help keep you dry from bow over spray. The DLX also has positive tracking keels on the running surface, keeping the boat tracking true while maneuvering without the typical flat-bottom slide.

Holy shit can you not read?

>>904382
My personal experience with carolina skiff is limited, however, my grandfather has one. He said it was one of the biggest mistakes hes ever made and that the boat is garbage. He takes really good care of it and it still pretty much sits in the shop getting worked on. Thats all the anecdote i have to offer. Take it with a grain of salt.
>>
>>904393
What in God's name needs to get worked on besides the outboard motor?
>>
>>904393
Would never buy them used. Nobody ever takes care of skiff boats. They beat the shit out of them.

Id personally buy a Mako 19 CPX or 18 LTS. Mako makes solid boats. My Uncle has a 21 LTS that he uses for catfishing but its more expensive. Its very sturdy and stable. It doesn't rock much at all. It has a large casting deck and could see it being used for bass. Its a saltwater boat so obviously it would work there.
>>
>>904399
Electronics. Hull work. Paint needs to be re done once a year if you keep it in water. Etc. Boat ownership isn't cheap as just buying one and keeping it full with gas and oil. Problem is 99% of boat owners don't do any of that maintenance and then complain its broke all the time and sell it. Used boats are mostly trashed by lack of maintenance or by hardcore fishers that have drilled a hundred holes in it for rod holders and have tore up the upholstery and electronics all gone to hell because they try to nigger rig things instead of getting them professionally installed. Literally seen a boat for sale with a diy trolling motor mount out of ply wood and a bunch of holes drilled for pvc pipe rod holders. Expected to get full resale value
>>
>>904399
His grandfather is clearly a fucking idiot who beats his boat to shit and then blames the boat
>>
Pretty good chance I'm going to Islamorada for spring break with some buddies in March. Anyone ever wade the flats with a fly rod for bones there?
>>
>>904408
As do boomers do with every thing they buy.

They go buy a toilet and throw it on the truck then throw it on the ground when they get home to find it broken when they open it then go leaving bad reviews of on every site they can find and condemn the company to hell and back.
>>
>>904406
My grandfather is a mechanic and carpenter trying to enjoy his retirement. Hes taken the fucking thing out on the water maybe 10 times and has owned boats before. Skiffs are just junk.
>>
>>904405
>>904416
How the fuck could a boat take more time to fix than you use it? The only thing that can really fuck up badly is the engine.

Even holes in the hull are as easy as slapping on some fiberglass, electronic issues can be fixed in an hour and "HURRR HOLES EVERYWHERE" is a stupid argument and noone actually does that shit to the point that the boat would be a piece of junk.
>>
>>904421
It has been engine problems. Dont know the specifics. Doesnt help that the guys at the marina that work on it arent exactly geniuses either.
>>
>>904423
so buy a new engine or find competent people to work on it for you, I still fail to see why everyone responds to people interested in used boats with "NAH BRAH IT AINT WORTH IT"

Yeah it's not finished yet. I still need to build a platform for the seat (just a few inches, enough room to slide a tackle box under), build a cart, and eventually buy a fish finder. I don't plan on taking it out until spring, so there's plenty of time to add all sorts of shit. I thought about going the jon boat route as well but a kayak seems slightly more convenient to lug around in a truck bed.

>>904621
Dunno haven't taken it out yet. I hope it's fast. I got a 45 lb thrust motor which is probably overkill. But I plan on hitting the river sometime and have no idea how strong the currents may be out there.

Carolina Skiff boats are decent I guess. They're basic fiberglass center console boats with not much luxury or comfort. Good entry level center console boat that is sold in masses and abused a lot.

The DLV is a modified Tri-V hull.
The DLX is a flat bottom skiff.
The JVX is a modified V hull.

They're all about the same. I'd personally go with a JVX or DLV if you were doing deep water, but they are still shit for deep water. You would want a deep V hull.

Their other company Sea Chaser makes actual deep V bay boats.

The F series stands for Flats. Made for more shallow saltwater down in Florida and stuff. You'll see them everywhere.
The HFC is a hybrid fish and cruise center console.
The LX is like the standard center console bay boat.
The Sea Skiff series is like a mix between the F and LX series.

They are decent brands. With Carolina Skiff you probably won't be able to fish in choppy waters as much and will only be able to go out in the bay when the weather is perfect, unless you want to be uncomfortable the entire time. On the other hand if you get a Sea Chaser, you won't be able to go fishing in as shallow water because of the deep V design.

I'd personally go with a Mako inshore boat. Either the 18 LTS or 19 CPX.

Either way, research each model. Look at all the specs. Take reviews with a grain of salt. And always always always go out for a test ride before you buy one. That way you'll know if you'll like it.

It's up to you though. If you'll be bay fishing mostly, go with Sea Chaser. If you'll be bass/shallow water fishing mostly, go with Carolina Skiff. If you want an even mix, go with Mako.

I'm seriously depressed... should I actually try to get help anons? I keep getting a rope together to hang myself but end up not doing it. I often just want to blow my brains out with my .270 winchester but it would make a mighty mess and horrify my wife when she found me. Hanging is a lot less messy but I'm scared of the minute or so of horror till I pass out and die.

Fishing doesn't even make me happy anymore. No one cares or wants to go with me. No one wants to go hunting. No one wants to go shoot arrows at the range for fun. No one wants to blow up soda cans with a shot gun. There is just no hope for friends as an adult. Everyone is too busy with work or their kids or some other horrific boring thing.

Everyone just wants to drink beer, or watch tv, or sit on their ass and get fat.

I'm basically an alcoholic and need to stop and I don't know if I'm going to make it to the new year guys.

If I don't make it keep shit posting for me guys.

I'd consider talking to a proffesional. We all hit ruts in life but it sounds like you're taking this one pretty hard, which is fine it happens. Talk to someone about learning CBT as someone who got pretty messed up by depression it's one of the best tools i have. Being able to talk yourself through it (CBT) and talking to someone is really relieving. I'd give that a shot before doing anything drastic. I lucked out and a bunch of my friends went from gamers to gamers who go camping/fishing. Find an interest group (maybe on social media) and try to find other who share the same interest as you. Failing that share you shit here or on adv plenty of anons would be willing to lend an ear myself included. Good luck anon and i'm hoping for you.

That sucks man, you'll get through it. Down periods suck and I'm a people hater so when I get down it's worse, no social circle and all.
Most areas have all sorts of groups, ie fishing, hunting, that meet once a month during the off season. See if you can find any that have your interests.
Find new hobby to immerse yourself in. Helps if you're spergy and go all in learning.

Go to a prof if you're really to the point where you're actively thinking of ending it.

Otherwise I'll be sure to shitpost & troll harder.

Good luck anon

Since my mom died and my dad lost our house (mid August) that's how I've been
I only got a job at Dicks cause I couldn't keep commuting to McDonald's and spending more on gas than I make in a day. A good day is one where I don't sit with a gun to my head trying to work up the nerve to do it.

Where do you live? If you're near Ohio we could ride my motorcycle in to a brick wall together
Or maybe try being friends and see if that works first

Was probably 10 inches. Very fat though. Usually I catch 4-8inch croaker. We get rays, shark, mackerel, and striper but a wire lead does sound smart. I have a ton of it for making inlines I'll just need to whip up some haywire twists
>>
>>904826
I'd say #3 is ideal and that 10 inch I wouldn't hesitate to fish
Rig up a #50 shock leader, put on a pyramid sinker, and 6-8 inches of 43 pound (or heavier if you want) wire with a swivel at one end and a 6/0-7/0 octopus circle hook, you'll have fun with a shark or ray, or fish it higher in the water and get a mack or shark

The best eating croakers are in the 12" range easier to clean but still young and light.

Skin and fillet them out.
Clean out any left behind or pin bones.
Cut into 1/2 inch wide strips.
Coat in mix of corn meal with salt and pepper.
Fry in oil till crispy and golden.
Place on two warm corn tortillas.
Top with cole slaw, chipotle mayo and a squeeze of lime.

>>904862
hali's swim all over the place and all over the water column. its when they are mating they settle into dips. croakers make good live bait, lings eat em' just not off the pier there because not many predators cruising through. smaller live mac as bait will get you bit from the pier easier. hali's striper ect will eat live macs.

also dont eat croakers bro. mercury is high on them here.. if you want to then eat the younger smaller ones, less time alive means less parasites and low merc levels.

>>904892
I'm not worried about losing meat. I get most of it when I skin and fillet them, learn to do it right and there is little "waste". The rest I grind down for chum or bait for traps. It is also faster than cleaning and scaling.
>>
>>904901
Lol thats what I thought, I was pretty sure croaker are trash for eating. I have yet to catch anything other than baitfish and perch off the piers here, but I've heard that Walleye perch make fantastic sashimi. I've only ever cooked Barred Surf Perch filleted and fried but that was delicious

I eat them off the bone 99% of the time but it all flakes of the skeleton so easily theres no reason to let it go to waste by filleting it

>>904904
True but I don't use my leftover fish for chum so I like to get as much from each fish as possible. I fillet large fish like trout and catfish but anything under 15 inches or so gets its head cut off and cooked whole.

You lose about 30% of the meat on panfish between the bones and around its neck when you fillet it

Float/worm questions: If you guys fish with a float and worms, how is your setup like?
Do you put the float directly on the braided line or add fluorocarbon/nylon leader and put it on there? Do you attach a single worm or a ball of worms? Do you leave the bail up or down while the float is on the water? Also do you add a split shot betwwen worm and float?

Its a type of fishing i'd like to get better at. There's a guy who comes to my usual spot some times and ive seen him leave with some nice size trouts on days where I dont catch anything.

put a bobber on your line normally, and if you do a split shot, you either want it 12-18 inches from the hook or half way between the hook, so the bait moves naturally. as for hooking the worms, you can gob a single worm on the hook, you can hook the worm once, you can use one worm, you can use many, its all up to you. dont hesitate to play around a little

So i was planning on taking my boat out for the first time to a local lake to make sure the motor runs good before i go and take it out on a river.

But I am not experienced in lake fishing (with the exception of trout form shore), so i will be somewhat clueless out there.

The lake i will be fishing has bluegill, crappie, bass, and trout

What lure could i use to effectively target as many of those fish as i can?

Or would i be better off drowning a nightcrawler on a dropper loop?

Should I even bother fishing lakes from the shore? It seems I can never get any bites from the small amount of water I can actually access. Shore fishing just seems significantly suckier than fishing from any kind of boat.
>>
>>905141
It is, people don't like to admit it, but it realy sucks not being able to hit the best spots.

But when your poor your poor so you make do and try to convince yourself it's not that bad.
>>
>>905141
Depends on the lake some have plenty of good places you can hit where you can find space to cast but most of the large lakes that I've tried to fish from shore kinda sucked cause the trees went right up to the water so there was no way to get a cast out not to mention all the time walking from spot to spot not that walking sucks it just means less time you've got a line in the water so I've just stuck to ponds and smaller reservoirs

And shore fishing is worse than a boat no doubt but boats are money pits unless you get a plain John boat with an older motor in good shape that you can easily work on yourself when something inevitably breaks and even then you've gotta pay registration fees on it

Boats really open up a whole new world of fishing opportunities though and I hope to get one relatively soon myself

I swear, im happy as fuck if i manage to get a single seabass. Or single any fish i fish for.
I wouldn't catch upwards of 5 anyway most likely, unless i had a family get together going on in the near future.

Although in USA i did catch...several...red snapper, but in my defense it was my only fishing trip while there, and i gave away most of them, the rest i ate.

just make sure you buy a new (small) reel for it. go in to gander mountain, grab the combo (presumably youre going spinning) then hold it up to the other spinning reels till you find one similarly sized. 1000-1500 should be about the right size.

look at the bright side anon, at least you got a wife. at least someone in your life is concerned about you.

I probably speak for a lot of anons when I say I'm very lonely.

I dont have a wife or gf or any future prospects. 33 years old and the game is almost over for me. Not many guys can get a gf this late in the game.

I go to bed every night alone. Wake up every morning alone. No one cares if I live or die. Sometimes it's soul crushing. Especially in the holiday time of the year.

I often fantasize about how nice it would be to fish and kayak with a girl I'm in love with. One that's my best friend.

But alas it's not meant to be.

At least take pride in the fact you are at least normie tier.

Anything is better than being a manlet (I am) or a robot.

33 is prime male time my friend. I met my wife around then, had a kid a few years later. Up to 40 you are golden asuming you're in 1/2way decent shape and have a job.

Can't help you with the manlet thing. Only advice I can give with that is most manlet try overly hard to be funny, at least from my observations. Chicks dig funny, they don't like obnoxious loud wannabe funny.

I do have a job and in shape though. But manlet (5'6") is a cruse.

>>
>>905385
>>905382
Is that a river? Because even without the cover, you want to figure out what the current is doing. The predators will hang out behind some underwater obstacle or bend or anything that could cause an area of slower moving or still water. They will sit right on the edge of that stagnant water and wait for the baitfish to come cruising downstream in the faster current.

At least that's what the interwebz told me.

>>
How often do you folks go fishing
>>
>>905388
I mean you should be able to tell by looking at the water. Or at least how the lure or bait is moving. But finding the calm spots is sometimes easier said than done.

But the rule of thumb with lure fishing in rivers is to cast upstream and retrieve downstream right on that edge between fast and slow water. The predators sit in the still water facing upstream waiting for a meal to swim or drift down towards them.

Bends in the river create deep spots on the outside of the bend which can result in slower water I believe. And then you just get random sandbars and shit and fish will sit just behind those. But I don't river fish much anymore so I'm mostly just repeating what I have read.

I try and get out at least twice a week for a couple hours. But I don't really do the 8hrs on a boat. Every couple weeks I will spend a whole Saturday pond hopping tho.
>>

Id recommend just getting a 5ft light or ultra light rod and a 500 or 1000 size reel. You can strap the rod vertically to your pack and stow away the reel.

Any "compact" or pen size rod you get will be complete ass. Trust me I've bought a few

I get 4 day weekends because I work 12 hour shifts and head down to Williamsburg where my family's camper is at a campground. First day off I'm usually doing chores for my Grandma to get the keys to the camper then head down there. I'll buy some groceries and get my gear set up. Next 2 days I'm fishing from sunrise to sunset. Maybe come back in for lunch to get a bite to eat and gas up. Then the last day, I'm cleaning off my boat and gear then heading back home.

April-May: I'll start going back out in the bay when it's warm. Catch some Flounder and Tautog around the CBBT. But I mostly stay in the river bass and catfishing. It's only fun catching the small saltwater fish when you're taking family. They enjoy it.

June-October: Spend most of my 2 days fishing out in the bay or offshore if the weather allows my 22' boat to survive out there. I'll usually bring a sleeping back and camp in the bed of my truck instead of driving all the way back to the camper for the night. I'll sometimes stay in the river instead when I feel like catching Gar or my family wants to go catfishing. During these months things really pick up. I'll catch some shark, Cobia, Amberjack, Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, etc.

November-March: Don't really do much. I may go out for a few hours the first day to see if I can catch any bass or catfish. But I mostly just go down there to enjoy the seafood restaraunts and shopping.

Right now since it is winter about 1 or 2 times a week. I get off work at 4 or 4:30 and the sun is down within the hour. Blows cocks, if I want to fish during the week I go down to the pier after dark and toss a carolina rig or high-low and slow retrieve.

During summer I had 3-4 hours of light every day after work to go surf fishin' - not only that the tides lined up perfectly so that I could get off work, grab my stuff, and head out for the rising or falling high tide

Also since I've got a bit of money I will go on fishing vacations once or twice a year. This year I hit colorado for some fly fishin (pic related - girlfriend's first fish ever) and in February I'll be in Hawaii surf fishing for a solid 7 days

Ideally I'd do like 3 days a week but having a job, woman, and non-/out/ doggo makes striking a balance a bit hard.

I actually like the sun going down a bit earlier. It was the best right before daylight savings because it was getting dark at like 6:30pm. The hour before and half hour after sunset seems to be the best for fishing. So I could get off work around 3pm, go home and relax for an hour and a half, head to the lake around 5:30pm, and then it would be too dark by 7pm so I could go home and get some sleep.

I wake up at 4:30am for work so it is rough trying to fish sunset in the summer. I would be out there til 9:30pm. End up getting home around 10pm and by the time I catch an hour of TV and eat some food, it is midnight and I get like 4hrs of sleep before I have to wake up for work.

I mostly use a senko-like bait texas-rigged as that has given me the most success in the past and is least likely to snag, I'm fishing mostly in fast-moving rivers because that's what's available to me. When fishing in rivers I cast upstream try to cast into bends in the river which are likely to be holes. When fishing the senko I cast it out, wait for 15-30 seconds, give it a tug, let it settle, repeat. Because the water is cold I fish it pretty slow.
I use spoons and inline spinners when the water is pretty clear of weeds, I reel at a constant velocity while pulsing the rod back and forth. I've had VERY little success with this.
I also sometimes fish nightcrawlers, I attach sinkers above the hook to allow me to cast it farther and cast it out and wait.

Get on the Z-Mans. I really like a lot of Culprit baits but they get torn up fast too. If the hook pops out once on a weedless rig, it's time for a new one.

Zooms hold up fairly well compared to some others. And the Strike Kind plastics are decent. Certain Strike Kings actually use the same plastic as Z-Man too. It is really stretchy and soft and doesn't tear easily.

Still tryin to get over to that lake and meet up with anon to go fishin but Florida local and state authorities are terrible at dealing with accidents and traffif control and all the other people driving like cunts doesn't help.

So i finally bought a $100 rod/sedona combo and some braid line. Am i correct in thinking i should buy an empty tackle box and build my own collection? I can see a bunch of collections on bcf (ausfag) but they don't look very good, but i don't know anything. Also what should i get next? I want to freshwater fish (though i am going to the coast soon). I could probably get a bunch of cheap gear at the coast since it's near christmas. I literally only have a hook, leader and swivel that i salvaged from a inredibly old family tackle box that everyones already had a go at, there's also an old yellow lure? I'm thinking of going to a nearby river or lagoon to fish with the leader and lure, probably won't catch shit but i've been wanting to try my rod out.

$1,000 minimum for an "economy" Shark/Goliath Grouper rod and reel combo. Over $2,000 for a "standard" combo.

$500 for a standard trolling rod and reel combo.

$20-$30 for a basic lure. $200-250 for a surf fishing lure kid. $100 for a top water lure kit.

No wonder the saltfags stick to pier fishing catching dink bait fish. I couldn't afford real saltwater fishing. Top that on top of a $60K bay boat minimum. So much for the idea of that hobby.

Here's my little baby one.

I need to look at the saltwater X-Raps more for bass. A Size 12 would definitely work. That long cast one is cool. I hate using Husky Jerks or Originals larger than Size 10 because of the 3 treble hooks. They aren't really any larger than a Size 10's trebles so they don't hook bass better and they like to get caught up on the fish when they are fighting. With catch & release, I don't enjoy pulling trebles out of a bass's cheek or eye.

Anyone? I found a nice looking beginner tackle box (~$25) and was going to get a spoon, jig, spinner lure plus some hooks and sinkers. Any recommendations for products or brands? I might get some hooks to replace the shoddy ones on the lures as well. Should i buy a scaler and knife ? I need an adult.
>>
>>905630
I would get a tackle bag and buy your own shit. Those tackle kits often come with tons of crap you will never use and not nearly enough of the stuff you do use.

If doing freshwater, get assorted Aberdeen hooks for live bait, assorted split shots, and bobbers. Lures totally depend on what you are fishing for. I always reccommend Rapalas and Mepps because they are easy to use (both technique and setting the hook) and basically any predator fish will go for them. But you have to find the correct sizes and see which colors work best.

You will snag and lose lures as well, so you can get away with cheaper brands. In the US, Bass Pro Shops has their store brand Rapala-type lures that are like 1/3 the price and work well. And Rooster Tails are just like Mepps but a couple dollars cheaper and they aren't bad. Especially since you are just building your collection and not sure what sizes and colors will work best for your area, it probably isn't worth buying top of the line lures.
>>
>>905630
Oh, and a knife is a good idea. I never eat my catch so idk about the scaler. Make sure you have a solid pair of needle nose pliers too for taking hooks out among other things. If you have fish with big teeth in the area, you might want one of those lippers but even when I get sneks with teeth I survive without the lip gripper.

That smol as fuck. The LC xrap is probably too big for you.

Ive come to find that lure size isnt that important with hungry seabass or bluefish. Ive caught fish where the lure was half the size of the fish itself....

Yeah get one of the flat, clear boxes with the snaps. For basic starter gear I would get a spoon, a spinner, a couple sizes of jig head and a couple types of soft plastic. Once you find out what's working you can build your collection further.

Why do white people buy boats with 2 or 4 outboards on it? Do they not realize 90% of the time an engine won't start, it's because of flooded engine or dead battery/bad starter? If one won't start, none of them will 80-90% of the time. Even your big charter boats and commercial boats have 1 engine.

Awesome thanks man didn't even think about a pair of needle noses. Yeah that what i figured in regard to the prefilled boxes. Alright i'll see if i can buy similar to those brands in kangarooland. I am planning on eating my catches but given the luck i've had prior to buying my own rod i won't get ahead of myself.
>>905644
Thanks a lot! I think my grandmother will let me keep this old box that's essentially what you described.I'll probably go a bit cheaper for a lot of my first purchases like pepsi suggested and get as much of those as i can.

Thanks for the advice guys!

The one in the pic is probably a Size 4 or 5. That's like a little bluegill ultralight lure. I would never use that for bass. Size 10 is still my favorite for largemouth and the 12 would definitely work. I just hate buying Size 11 and 12 Husky Jerks or Originals because they all have that third hook. Size 12 just means 12mm so it's only like 4.5" which is a good size for largemouth.

Anything smaller is normally for panfish or if the bass are being really picky and don't want to go for a big bait.

>>905645
Because they have the money to buy a boat with 4 outboards.

>>905649
Yeah, you definitely want a good set of needle nose pliers. A good multitool works well too but sometimes for species with small mouths, they can be too big to use effectively.

I'm gonna post the pic of my freshwater lake and pond assortment. That covers pretty much everything I would use in the US for smaller fish from ~4" bluegill up to 24"+ bass and other predators. A lot of it is the same exact lure but in different sizes. Big predator go for medium sized fish and other creatures (frogs, lizards, crayfish), medium predators go for small fish and creatures, and small fish eat tiny fish and creatures so your bait is supposed to minic that.

And I suggest looking at tackle bags instead of the old school toolbox style plastic boxes. The tackle bags use the flat clear plastic boxes with dividers and you can add or swap out boxes depending on what you are targeting that day. Or even just use a backpack (they make specific tackle backpacks too that are designed to fit the flat clear boxes).

Well I went to the pier and all I caught was a seagull

>casting a carolina rig with cut squid
>getting no bites, but fuck it I have a few other baits and lures to try
>cast a hard sidecast looks like it's going about 75-100yards
>seagull swoops down and directly into line
>gets tangled in one wing
>flips out and starts flying in circles tangling itself significantly
>keeps flying around getting more tangled
>i open the bail and he falls out of the air into the water
>floating fine but still very tangled
>shit I should cut the line and bounce
>look around
>20 people watching me, at least 5 camera phones filming this go down because I've been struggling for more than a minute now
>oh fuck here we go
>put my gloves and sunglasses on
>tighten down drag to max
>start reeling in this 5-10lb giant ass bird
>rod just about at the breaking point
>just as I'm about to bump him over the rail some lady comes up and offers to help
>take my rod while I deal with this fucking bird I have gloves on
>she takes rod
>bird struggling, running around, trying to peck me
>rip sweatshirt off
>wrap bird head in sweatshirt
>immediately docile
>untangle a bit then snip the line in a few places
>bird free
>release

jesus christ
kill me now
>tfw the biggest adrenaline rush I'll ever get fishing is from catching a god damn bird

why do I even try anons
>>
>>905663
Birds fucking suck. Especially the ones that are too comfortable around people. I got my line all wrapped up around a duck's neck a month or two ago. I cut it at first because he was getting choked trying to bring him in. Then he had like 20yds of braid trailing behind him so when he came to shore I had to chase him down and cut most of the line off. Then he finally got the rest of it off after I cut most of it.

But at least it was freshwater so I didn't have a bunch of people pointing cameras at me.

>Surf fishing
>School of bunker w fish working it
>Birds
>Start Hucking 3 ounce diamond jig
>Catch fish
>Whip it out there again
>Nail a seagull with 3 ounces of lead
>Knock the thing out of the sky ( but not tangled with it )
>Guy I had just met comes over to me somewhat stunned
>"Good shot I guess "
>Bird eventually fly's away after 10 min of floating

Nice i've saved that photo and i'll look into to the bags when i look to go beyond cheap gear. I have a multitool but i'll have to see how it fares. I've got some basic lures and gear lined up so hopefully i'll be able to post a fish i've caught sometime within the next 12 months. Thank again for the advice.

If you want to stay cheap, just grab a couple of the Plano flat boxes and throw them in a backpack. They are <$5ea. 3600 is the medium size and 3700 is larger. But if you get a couple 3600 boxes and you want to grab a tackle bag in the future, you can use those same boxes.

>seagul starts eating someone's squid
> he comes running over shouting "get out of here you fucking bird"
>it picks up a whole squid trying to fly away
>the guy throws a 5 ounce pyramid sinker at it
>hits it, it falls out of the sky
>it's dead for sure, bleeding from it's beak
>he throws it off the side of the pier so the ranger won't find it
I just looked the other way because I was 14 and this guy was 6'4" tattooed trailer trash

You should book a charter boat instead. that way you can use the boats gear and not have to invest in gear you wont use a lot.
IMO goliath groupers are over rated, they pull like a truck but lack stamina. you dont really need igfa class gear to land one.

pic related.

>Probably about 5 years ago
>With father,brother,and uncle
>Out fishing some kelp forests
>Fishing with fly lined live anchovy's
>Birds fucking everywhere
>Keep going for our bait
>Gets to the point where we can barely cast with our bait unmolested
>Constantly rebaiting
>Brother hooks seagull through tongue
>Yanks it in, unhooks it fly's away
>I Cast
>Fucking big ass pelican goes for it
>gets tangled in my line
>Haul the big fucker in and line is tangled around a bunch of his feathers on one wing
>When he is alongside boat pull his wing up and cut all his tangled feathers off with knife
>Retie and cast again
>Fucking cormorant goes for it and is hooked
>Mfw
>Bring it into the boat and it wont hold fucking still
>Whack it over the head with the handle of bait net
>Calms down, holding it behind the head i unhook it
>Toss bird over the side expecting it to fly away
>Just splats down and floats face down in the water, twitching occasionally
>we are all quiet as it slowly drifts away
>A couple other birds land next to it and stare at it
>The birds calm down a bit and we leave shortly after

Fuck birds
