>iodine as a water purifier
Is boiling water enough or should you both boil and use iodine?
>>
>>901758
It usually depends on the quality of the water you're starting with. If you have fairly dirty water, make sure to filter it somehow, and boil, but iodine is really the best way to go
>>
>>901760
Let's just say collected rain water in an area where acid rain isn't a huge issue. Your average rainwater.
Iodine is the best way?
>>
>>901762
Iodine is a chemical that kills bacteria when added to the water. Some people are allergic to it, so keep that in mind. Boiling kills water as well, though sometimes it's not the most optimal choice, and iodine can be used far more quickly and easily. I exaggerate when I say it's the best way to go. It's my way to go, because usually if I'm in need of water it's not quite as easy to light a fire and get my metal cup boiling than it is to just run it through a fine cloth and adding iodine drops. If you have standard rain water, it isn't too likely to have bacteria, so boiling would be all you need to do.
Overall, I'm not entirely certain, but I thin that boiling does actually kill more bacteria, but is more of a cumbersome thing to do. Consider it choice.
>>
>>901770
So ideally both but at the very least boil or iodine.
Thanks.

That creep guide in relationship trivia - I don't see the point

>looking in asia for brides
Sounds more like asking for trouble than sound advice

Cats vs dogs sounds more like interesting infodump than real comparision, it doesn't really say who should take a cat or dog

Somebody said that SHTF account from Bosnia is bullshit, but I cannot prove anything.

Just a few I got from short glimpse.
PFDs sure are better, but jpgs are off-putting a bit, at least for me.
>>
>>909445
I admit my Relationships folder needs work.

I agree that Cats vs Dogs is in the wrong folder. I just moved it to
>Interesting and Scientific/Interesting/Trivia
Thanks for the heads-up.

The SHTF account from Bosnia is BS, but there is some very useful info there despite the author never having set foot in war-torn Bosnia.

I also agree PDFs are better but not every piece of info is lengthy or worthy enough of it's own book - that's where infographs come in.

If you find any more discrepancies post them here - and that goes for everyone. The archive can only improve with constructive criticism.

Iodine is fantastic for quicker treatment. Still need to let it sit but it's quicker than boiling.

You can also use iodine to treat wounds. In planning a backpack or really anything it is good to have multiple uses in mind.

My backpack has a geigerrig bladder with two virus filters, a 1 micron bag filter (might get a half micron in the future, but neither is 100% so this is just to filter particles out anyway). Then I have iodine and alcohol if needed, I carry some 191 because it is a great fire starter, can clean the water, and is a worst case scenario antiseptic. Alcohol isn't great for treating wounds, but it's better than nothing. It has many more uses I haven't even touched on.

I also have a pot for boiling water, fits around my bottle.

My pack has enough room for at least 2 days of high water consumption between the bladder and bottle.

solar stills are easy as hell but won't work well in my area in the winter, not enough light usually. You can also just tie bags around trees and try to capture water from the tree, this is clean minus anything that might be on the tree where you bagged it (don't bag bird shit lol)

You can live hungry a lot longer than you can thirsty, and there isn't much safe water in this world anymore...
>>
>>902948
It's all situational. Are we talking lost while out, or teotwawki or whatever the fucking acronym is?

If you are lost there is a good chance you will be found unless you royally fuck up or go balls deep in unpopular places and don't tell anyone.

Surviving on a tropical island is a lot different than tundra.
Water is paramount, shelter/fire if the weather is outside of comfortable conditions. Tundra will be cold, deserts will be cold at night, in the tropics you might just need shade from the sun... Then food. Traps are your friend. Hunting is good but trapping is better if you don't fuck it all up. Fish traps, animal and bird traps.

Iodine is good for a back up, just incase you're un able to make fire, or trying to be stealthy.
>>
>>901758
Depends on the altitude youre in.

At sea level the water boils at 100c, which is enough to kill all the pathogens.

At higher altitudes the boiling point of water is lower so it might not be enough to kill all the pathogens in the water.

If you are over 3600mts you should use an extra way to purify the water to be sure, a couple of drops of iodine or sodium hypochlorite per liter will suffice.

You should filter the water before boiling it with a cloth or natural filter just to get rid of dirt or dangerous metals.

So I've got an idea to make a book scanner so I can update the library with all of my hard-copy books.

I've done this before with a camera and a cardboard box - it worked well but was very time consuming. I'm hoping to rig up an automatic scanner so that I can just place a book inside, turn it on, and forget it for an hour or two until it's done. Any ideas are welcome, and I'll also be posting a sister-thread in /diy/.

Wish me luck.
