What alcoholic drink do you take /out/?

I typically buy a bottle of 151. Have it all gone in about a hour. The euphoria of being so drunk you're a walking bobble head until you pass out with your dick in a fire ant mound.
>>
Depends on what type of pipe tobacco I bring. If I bring an aromatic I will bring rum or gin. Virginia blend would be scotch. A dark blend would be a porter or spiced ale.

McClelland's Single-Malt Islay Scotch Whiskey

I can get it for about $24/750ml. It's smokey and peaty like any Islay, but not like Ardbeg. It's not the finest scotch whiskey in the world, but for the price it's a lot better than Cutty Sark, Famous Grouse, and other scotch whiskeys in its price range. I prefer it neat, and drinking it a little on the warm side makes it a lot better. It's not so expensive that you feel bad tipping back several glasses of it in an evening or accidentally knocking it off a rock. It's my favorite for cold snowy nights.

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Just an excellent bourbon, especially for the price. I prefer it with a couple drops of water. Best in fall or spring, innawoods. Also pretty nice around July in the high country after the sun goes down behind the mountains and it starts to get cold.
>>
>>895825
(3 of some)

Corner Creek Reserve Bourbon Whiskey

Another good bourbon, not as sweet as Buffalo Trace and not as floral as Bulleit. Great around the camp or cabin year round. I prefer it neat.
>>

Bulleit Straight Bourbon Frontier Whiskey

I think most bourbon drinkers have had this one. Heavy on flavor, floral, smooth. Sometimes it's too much and I'll add water not so much to open it up as to thin it out, lol. I usually drink it neat, though. Good for winding down and escaping, as the aroma and taste fill the senses. I'd put it ahead of Buffalo Trace as a "dessert bourbon".

Bib & Tucker Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey

Earthy whiskey-flavored bourbon that's like the opposite of Bulleit. Unique, new to me (I've had only one bottle), but I love it. When I start on the first glass, I'll add half a teaspoon of water. By the third glass I waver between liking it neat or with a little water. This bourbon is a cool spring/summer hiking whiskey for rainy days. If you ONLY like sweet bourbons like Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark and Bulleit, you may not like this. If you wish there was a bourbon that was a little bit like a scotch, this is for you.

Linie Aquavit

A Scandinavian drink that's like a soft gin that tastes like the vanillins in a flavorful bourbon, but with the alcohol of vodka. It's kinda hard to explain. I'll take this along doing some open water paddling in the early spring of late fall, or when hiking/camping lakeshores, coasts, or rocky islands. Literally because I'm mostly Scandinavian.

There are other kinds of aquavit/akvavit out there, but this one is fairly common and mellower (and darker in color) than the others I've tried.

Try it if you want a change up. Works cold or hot.

Pimm's No. 1 Cup

Pimm's is sometimes described as a "caramelized gin", and while I'm not sure that's entirely correct this description does give you an idea of what it tastes like and how to use it. It's far sweeter and mellower than most herbal gins. While I sometimes enjoy it on the rocks, Pimm's is really at it's very best in the famous summertime cocktail named after it, the Pimm's cup.

A basic Pimm's cup for the outdoors is:

- 2 oz. Pimm's No. 1 Cup
- 3 oz. ginger ale (a good one with bite, like Goslings)
- A couple cucumber slices (refreshing)
- Orange slice.
- Crushed mint leaves.

A lemon slice or lemon+orange zest can also be added if desired. I prefer mine as outlined about. Double that recipe for a pint glass, add ice, and you have the best hot summer day cocktail ever, perfect for fishing by the lake, sunning on the boat, or cooking on the shore. Two pints of Pimm's cups, and you'll be happy all afternoon without feeling dehydrated. Definitely a daytime drink, it's too light for afterdark IMO. Bonus: chicks love it.

>>
>>895874
Johnnie Walker Black Label is very balanced and great as is. I even like Red Lable, but there's definitely a difference. It needs no water at all, so it's great for a flask.

It's hard to find a similarly balanced scotch whiskey at JW's price point, fyi.

Recommendations:

- Highland Park 12 is well balanced single malt, overall a better whiskey and an easy step up from JW.

- Talisker 10 year single malt is close in many ways, but again a much better whiskey

- Dalwhinnie 15yo

1 bottle of Pimm's, a can or two of ginger ale, a small cucumber, and few mint leaves don't take up shit for space. You can fit the cucumber and mint into your steel cup along with other stuff.

If you're one of those ultralight faggots, what are you even doing in this thread? You guys don't go out to enjoy the experience. Obviously it isn't going to fit in your tissue-paper thin 8-day hippack.

id maybe start with bourbons and rye's with some mix, adjust your palate for a while. when you move to scotch aim for something in the 50-65 range, i prefer single malts youll find what you like with trial and error.
a small amount of water tends to cut scotches nicely and opens them up flavour wise.

No, Jameson is pretty terrible straight. Irish whiskeys tend to be pretty bad straight. Go for a Bourbon to start. Maker's Mark is a good starting point. Generally cheaper than $28 for 750ml and it's amazing straight.

Not liquor, but Ballast Point makes a beer called a Habanero Sculpin. I've had a few bottles, and I'm convinced they've just bottle actual heartburn. It's not bad though. I have a bottle in my fridge now I'm saving to try and beer batter some fried fish with.
>>
>>896659
Start with flavored whiskey, on the rocks.

If you get some honey whiskey like Tennessee Honey or American honey, and have it ice cold on the rocks, it's so smooth you'd swear it's not liquor.

That can get you in the zone to start and appreciate liquor. It's not something that happened overnight for me, but now I can enjoy a good bourbon and not just wince with every sip.

Some very old people can still speak Norwegian, and a handful of young people attend Scandinavian studies programs and learn it. There are a few small towns in Minnesota where many people speak it, but many rural English dialects are heavily influenced by the language and cadence of the language. As to learning/knowledge about Norwegian culture, we have all sorts of shit like this:

http://www.hcscconline.org/current-exhibits/hjemkomst-viking-ship/
http://www.stoughtonnorwegiandancers.net/
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/washington-island-stave-church
http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/norwegian-heritage-center-opening-saturday-doubles-down-on-stoughton-s/article_111b2c4d-e6ab-54b6-9e24-749ae0737934.html
http://hostfest.com/about/
https://www.sofn.com/
https://midwestweekends.com/plan_a_trip/history_heritage/heritage_travel/norwegians_minnesota_wisconsin_iowa.html

Etc.

As far as knowledge about contemporary Norway, most Norwegian-Americans don't know much more than other people in their income and educational demographic. The emphasis is primarily on Norwegian history during the 19th century and the history of Norwegian immigrants (which makes sense). Norway is also a popular vacation choice for Norwegian-Americans, and while I've never been several of my family members and a few friends have. (One went to school there for a year). I've even heard NRK's Alltid Folkemusikk streamed at a couple holiday gatherings (again, the emphasis is on the past). And, we always cheer for you in the Olympics (after the US team, of course).

If you look at a list of the 37 universities in the world offering Scandinavian or Nordic studies programs, 10 of them are in the dark areas of that map, and 5 of those are in Minnesota alone.

It's a thing. The German-Americans do the exact same thing across the Midwest, and the Finnish-Americans do the same thing in Michigan (and in one Finnish town in South Dakota).

Guys, I found a steal for a backwoods whiskey. Mellow Corn, a bonded corn whiskey for under $15 a liter. Not only that, but it's actually really good. Not complex, but quality. The flavor is light enough to make it a year-round camp drink. Maybe too light for the depths of winter (for which I prefer a scotch or heavy bourbon). This is going to be a fantastic summer whiskey.

IKR?

Definitely not the scotch to introduce scotch to a non-scotch drinker, though. Unless they already smoke a pipe and have wood heat in their house. But yeah, if you like Islays, it's great for the money. I don't think there's a better Islay -- single malt or blended -- for the price. Not a god-tier scotch at all, but a good regular drinker.
