I'm also looking at getting the REI Flash or the Recon 3 (pic related)

I think the Flash is lighter (1 lb vs 3 lbs) but that also means not as heavy duty. Both about the same price...

I've got the Igneo.
Would recommend.

Always try a bag out in person before buying. Roll it up and see how big it actually is. Zip the zipper a few times to see if it snags. It's one of the most important /out/ items you will ever buy so take it seriously and never buy sight unseen.

Take a look at the Kelty Cosmic 20, it's rated at a lower temp and is about $50 cheaper than the flash. It does weigh a little bit more though. I think around 10oz....
>>

100-150 buck budget, any recommendations?

it's compressed size is 10L, compared to 3.7 for the flash

>>
>>895185
Just purchased the KLYMIT KSB 20 Degree Bag.
Amazon sells it for $140.
Packs down to approx the size of a rugby ball.

I haven't tried it yet, so take all this with a grain of salt. but it seems comparable to the Kelty Cosmic 20. But with the addition of "flexible baffles" that allows for a wider range of motion in the bag without sacrificing heat as they contour to whatever position your in.
>>
>>891648
FYI, only part (blue baffles) of that bag is down. The majority is synthetic and it probably won't compress as much as you'd like.
>>
>>896242
Try TNF Furnace. I have the blue one (forget the rating) and it packs down really, really small.

Also if you can go to the store and try it out. A lot of them pack down more than the internet says. And some of them are shorter than what is said on the websites. I tried the Cosmic and it said it sleeps taller people than me and it definitely does not. Which is why I went with the furnace.
>>
>>891648
note though that it has a LIMIT rating of 29 degrees. Usually it's a good idea to orient yourself at the COMFORT rating of a bag which in this case is 41 degrees

I mean to be honest the comfort rating is targeted at a standard women and the limit rating at standard men but I've found the ratings to be rather optimistic. Also they are calculated expecting the person to be within a tent and wearing one layer of thermal underwear.

That being said the bag looks pretty good for the price

>29 american degrees limit
Just remember that a sleeping bag starts to feel cold before you reach the limit. I like to give myself an extra 10 degrees or so. If it's going to be freezing or below, I tend to use the -15F winter bag. My summer bag is an 800 fill down <2-pound +20F model, but I tend to feel cold in it if gets down to +30F. When I'm uncertain how cold it's going to be, I have a 1 lb polyester (?) over-bag for the +20F bag, which allegedly gives me another 20 degrees lower. Pic related, the Moonstone Lucid, the +20F bag I've been using for years. I think the company is gone, however.

What is the price range on bags to -20celsius?
I had the german algemein 2 arma bag.
When you get in its hot as hell, when you start sleeping you cool down and thw temp is ok.
I hated the plastic inside of it.
Also slept outside without isomattres or tent, just in the open. In the morning it had a layer of frost on it.
>>
>>891648
I wouldn't; I've owned an REI bag for less than 2 years now and it sheds clusters like fucking crazy, the stitching is coming undone and though its a 20 rated, I was often waking up cold in 40 degree temps. That and it loses a ton of loft after being compressed, not sure where they get their down but I've been washing my bad with down wash every other week now just to make it usable again.

Of course If you're a casual and don't sleep below 30 degrees more than a few nights a year, you should be fine.

>>
>>904446
Dude, do you current price?

Or is it cushy hate? And YES! 4" of fucking backside love!

I would not use the Nemo Stratosphere w/o insulated pads. There is no fill on the bottom, that saves weight.

Much like the Sierra Designs Backcountry Bed is only half fill on the backside.

The B/A insulated Q-Core long, wide <barely> fits the zip pocket, but does and holds in place tightly.

REI takes returns like a crack whore sucks cock...

>anytime, any reason

I returned the Nemo Mezosphere bags when the Stratosphere went on sale. (Because they had a dog hair on them both.) Less weight, less bulk, more insulated.

Still a heavy combo option. About 4.5#'s each.

GREAT for car camping in my Tikla Teahouse 3.

Really nice and roomy setup for a rainy day and saucy puss.

Is it possible to find a double sleeping bag no more than 5 pounds that can handle 20 degrees?
>>
I got the Klymit KSB 0˚ Synthetic Realtree® Xtra Sleeping Bag last week for an unexpected $40 discount. I'm vegan and wanted a bag to replace a traditional sheets and blanket bedroom set up, and this was the best I could find in terms of functionality and style.

I got my order this week but Klymit fucked up and sent me a 20 degree instead, which was either them intentionally trying to gyp me (which seems unlikely), or they just send this stuff out manually, in which case the representative probably saw the $180 price tag and assumed I was getting the 20 degree instead. I called today and I will be getting sent my bag in the coming week.

Anyway, this bag was unexpectedly light. Not too bulky either. It was very warm inside and pretty comfy. I also really like the design; it's one of the coolest looking bags, synthetic or otherwise, that you could buy. It's soft and roomy. And finally, when you zip it up, it zips without catching on any of the bag material, so there's no pain in the ass there.

Pretty good bag. I might think twice before recommending the company, as I did get a fucked up order, plus the bag is made in China, but they were good enough to give a discount on Cyber Week and they aren't going to charge me for their mistake, but as far as the bag goes, it's pretty cool and you should consider it if you have similar criteria as me.

>>906041
Looks like those don't exist. Consider getting one of Nemo's double sleeping bags and getting a liner that will add the extra 10 degrees of warmth.

you're buying a fuckhueg backpack, a sleep system that will be too hot if it isn't literally freezing, and a cookset with no stove to use it with.
>thoughts on getting this setup?
you are spending almost 600 dollars to sweat while you sleep and have something fancy to pour a cold can of soup into. Doing an overnight trip or two with cheap gear instead of spending the better part of a grand on gear you can't utilize effectively would help you far more

If you have money, you're better off buying good shit once rather than cheap shit twice. As long as you know what you're buying.

I use a -7C sleeping bag for 3 seasons, but I am in Canada. On the warmest days, I use it as a blanket only and don't zip it up, but I can use it well into spring/fall or even early winter. Personally I think it is a great choice... for where I live.

Cookset / stove choice very much depends on how you intend to eat. Some trips I don't take a stove/cookware at all and eat only uncooked foods like nuts/berries/jerky. Some trips I boil water and eat rehydrated food out of the bag (no cookware). Some trips I do actual cooking.

A 48L bag is by no means "fuckhueg" for overnight trips. The size/usefulness of that bag is further reduced because it has all those side pockets, rather than simply one large central pocket. This means packing can be "organized" but in reality is just going to make it more difficult to fully utilize the space - space that is included in that 48L measure. If you actually have money, you're better off getting a Osprey, Gregory, or Deuter pack.
>>
>>911422
i'm arguing he's better off buying cheap shit once, learning what he wants out of it, then upgrading to good shit if necessary. spending 600 dollars without even covering the basics because "i want to do more outdoors stuff" is a poor way to get started.

>>912930
no bags are waterproof less than very expensive. they are water /resistant/

>>908045
So I got the bag I paid for and used it yesterday and today. Honestly kind of disappointed.

So the bag really is pretty huge in its pack. Much bigger than the 20 degree. I would be fine with that if it were better. It's more padding so softer though. The bag does a good job in trapping heat. However, the hood doesn't protect your face at all. I might be remembering wrong, but I believe the 20 degree bag did a better job of that than this 0 degree. My face is exposed to open air unless I dip inside the bag more, but there's still nothing to do about this hole. It's as if they expect you to wear a neck gaiter or something. There's no way to tighten it up as far as I can see.

They also advertise the bag as having an internal pocket but I found no such thing. All there is is some small padded buffer that you could place things under that circumscribes the bag near the chest, but that's not a pocket. The bag also has a lot of straps and loops that are apparently useless.

If you're looking for a replacement for a traditional bed setup and have a more or less insulated room, then you'd be fine with the 20 degree bag I think.

I would definitely look these guys up. I just spent this weekend at RMNP with -30 degree temps and was just fine. It's 850 fill down and compresses down incredibly tiny and only weighs 3 pounds. I used it, a bivvy, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag liner and was perfectly warm. I bought the 0 degree down one
>>
>>903456
It respectively sounds like you're the casual, mate.

The low end of sleeping bag ratings is factored in with a thermal barrier between the bag and the ground, as well as a sleeping bag liner, or wearing full clothing.

You are also not supposed to store sleeping bags in compression. They should only look be compressed for the duration of your hike in and out. Common sense to fluff your bag before and after every use.

I own a Kelty cosmic 40, and have slept comfortably in temperatures slightly below that with a sleeping pad and a liner. I sleep naked too.

Check out the SOL escape bivvy. It's made from 14S Tyvek, So it's basically the lovechild of goretex and mylar; Breathable, water resistant, thermally reflective. I use just this and a Thermalite Extreme liner (and a CCF pad) down to ~30F. Including my ground cloth and CCF pad, my whole bed roll weighs less than two pounds. It's a little scary the first time you take it out, because there's only 1/32 inch between you and the cold, but it works!
