marker bouy. it has a soft piece of lead on the end. you find an are you want to mark be it ledge, rock shelf, reef, drop off and you drop it off the side of the boat. it marks the location of the structure you would like to fish.

I use my fish finder to do this now a days.

It's still useful, can mark where a nice hole is, allowing you to drift over it easily.
Can mark where you lose something overboard as well, this got me a fairly expensive reel back when my little niece decided she wanted to cast by herself.
