Guys I live in the city with no reliable means of transportation to go someplace cool. I'm also in college so even if I were to bike somewhere far and try to stay out there for a bit I would have to come back of course.

So for now I'm just planning on going to the pic-related area, Mt. Airy Forest. It's only like 1500 acres but I want to just get out there as much as possible because I'm tired of sitting around at home.

So I went ahead to their website for a map and this was the only one they had. Apparently all the trails in red are closed? Does that mean they just don't want people on them or that they are unsafe or something?
I'll probably end up exploring them anyways after getting a feel for the area but I was wondering if anyone knew a reason for closing off essentially all the trails in the area?

Trails get closed for multiple reasons.
Sometimes trails are cycled through- once one area starts to show signs of use they're closed so they can recover and others are opened up.
Sometimes its because of a protected species breeding during that time of year. This might be something as small as a rare butterfly.
On occasion its a safety concern- sinkholes, abandoned mines with dilapidated barricades.

Makes sense, thanks m8

But you shouldn't go into closed areas.

Mt. Charleston in Nevada has a rare butterfly that may be extinct now because of a fire a couple years ago- the fire was centered in their only known habitat.
So even if it makes no sense why an area is closed, it could be for something very important. Stepping on one Mt. Charleston blue butterfly caterpillar could mean the difference between survival of the species or extinction.

Yeah for sure, like I said I am going to get a feel for the area before I even attempt going on a closed path. That includes talking to some of the people who work at the park department thing about these trails before anything else
