I'm heading the FUCK /out/ into the world to find peace. I've been diagnosed with stress and extremely high blood pressure at the age of 23, on top of a depression and an existential crisis.

What are the bare essentials I might need? This is what I have planned to bring so far:
>passport
>as much money as possible
>clothes
>first aid kit
>water containers
>cooking/eating gear
>Leatherman Kick (hopefully customs won't take it since it's babbys first multitool)
>firesteel
>tarp
>rope
>sleeping bag

Anything I've forgotten? I'll be picking up food on the go when I'm not WWOOF'ing.

Lel, ok, McCandless.
>>
>>855776
Arrangements have been made, and tickets bought. I'm shipping out on the 20th of January for a year in Japan. And that's just the beginning.
>>
>>855783
Just make sure you find something other than a bus to die in. That one's been done already.
>>
>>855784
Oh, I'm not doing an Into the Wild thing. Fuck that. I'm just preparing in case I need to camp for a while between jobs or volunteer work. But I'd also like to travel light, and with regards to customs. Also, as much as I love my Hultafors hatchet, I don't think I'll be able to bring it with me.
>>
replace the firesteel with a bic lighter
>>
Anyone know if I can bring a hatchet into Japan? Or around the world in general?

If I'm a gnarly lookin' young dude with a big backpack and hiking shoes, would they even bat an eye at an old, rusty hatchet?
>>
>>855768
No matter how far you travel you can never escape your own faggotry.
>>
>>855813
Speaking from experience, faggot?
>>
>>855814
Takes one to know one, faggot.
>>
>>855820
Wanna make out? ;)

Sounds like the perfect equipment list for a cannibal serial killer...

You forgot a mat though.

Nights can be really fucking cold in Japan, depending on the time of year and what part of Japan you're in.

Can you speak Japanese? Not everyone can speak english there, and even when they can, you might have trouble understanding them correctly.

Are you aware of their laws regarding drifting, hiking and such? Are these laws common to all Japan or are they different in some places?

Do you know where to find youth hostels, hiking shelters and the likes?

Do you know what places are illegal for you to go in when it comes to wilderness camping? Do you know the requisites for the official camping sites?

Do you have a work visa if you need one? Do you know how to get one for your next destination when you'll be ready to leave Japan?

Can you read Kanji? Some signs have really bad english, so knowing Kanji is a must.

Are you aware of the Japanese giant hornet and how it can fuck you up?

If you're near a hiking trail, there are toilet paper vending machines. Don't try to steal tp from public toilets, they lock that shit up and make it difficult to take more than a few squares at a time.

>You forgot a mat though.
True. I have a good one, though.
>Nights can be really fucking cold in Japan, depending on the time of year and what part of Japan you're in.
I'll start in Kyushu in January, and hopefully WWOOF there for a year or so.
>Can you speak Japanese? Not everyone can speak english there, and even when they can, you might have trouble understanding them correctly.
Sukoshi dake, desu. But my WWOOF host speaks English, and will teach me Japanese.
>Are you aware of their laws regarding drifting, hiking and such? Are these laws common to all Japan or are they different in some places?
Eh, no. But I figure my WWOOF host would be able to give me info.
>Do you know where to find youth hostels, hiking shelters and the likes?
Google.
>Do you know what places are illegal for you to go in when it comes to wilderness camping? Do you know the requisites for the official camping sites?
Google.
>Do you have a work visa if you need one? Do you know how to get one for your next destination when you'll be ready to leave Japan?
I'll be getting a working holiday visa. And I have no clear next destination in mind yet.
>Can you read Kanji? Some signs have really bad english, so knowing Kanji is a must.
Nah, but google.
>Are you aware of the Japanese giant hornet and how it can fuck you up?
Yes.
>If you're near a hiking trail, there are toilet paper vending machines. Don't try to steal tp from public toilets, they lock that shit up and make it difficult to take more than a few squares at a time.
I'm not a dirty thief. I'll buy that stuff before heading innawoods.
>>
>>855834
Sounds like you got it under control.

Maybe bring a paper dictionary/Japanese guide in case of no internet connection. Some money in a waterproof container/bag separate from your other money and papers. You never know.

There's also a good chance that the first week you'll have some small intestinal problems because of the water/food over there being different.
>>
>>855836
I have a friend who've studied Japanese because he's a massive fucking weeb. He's promised me to give me his study books before I head out. But yeah, I was planning on getting all that anyway.

And thanks for the warning. I've traveled most of my life, so my gut is lined with teflon by now.
>>
>>855768
>I've been diagnosed with stress and extremely high blood pressure at the age of 23, on top of a depression and an existential crisis.
Suck it up, butter cup. You sound like one of those crybaby college students who needs a "safe space" to keep you feelings from getting hurt.
>>
I reckon you should bring one of them sawyer survival filter things.
>>
>>855879
My blood pressure is 160/90.

Yeah, I definitely need a safe space if I don't want a stroke at 25.
>>
>>855892
Why Japan if I may ask
>>
>>855892
Stop gorging on fast food amerifat.
>>
>>855897
Always wanted to go.

>>855898
I'm Scandinavian. Doctor ran a myriad of blood tests. My physical health is fine. Everything is mental from 10 years of torture from my insane mother.
>>
>>855897
Nah, actually it's deeper than that. I've been a weeb like many of us here. That passed, but the fascination of the mentality stayed with me. I've met many Japanese people through my job, and they seem very polite and respectful. I think that surrounding myself with down to earth farmers from such a culture, up in some faraway mountains surrounded by forests, for a long period of time would heal me well.
>>
>>855905
Fair enough, enjoy your journey
>>
what are you expecting to find in japan?
you know japan has the highest suicide rate amongst first world countries
and they hate foreigners
good luck with that

should have gone to some 3rd world wilderness where everyone treats white people like visiting royalty, like mongolia or something.
>>
>>855921
Peace.

I'll be staying with a chill old couple on a farm in Kyushu, and they both seem based as hell from what I've written with them about.

And the suicide rate is due to their corporate culture. An organic, self sustaining farm isn't exactly that.

Also, Japan is just the first stop.
>>
>>855768
What is the plan for when the working vacation sorta thing ends?

Will you be in the same sort of position you found yourself in before leaving?
>>
>>855951
Probably heading to Australia and do the same thing. Or go to Beijing. I have contacts there who can get me a job.
>>
>>855768
>I'm heading the FUCK /out/ into the world to find peace.
your attitude will be the single biggest essential thing that you will need, and with that i hope you find some well needed peace.
good luck and Godspeed.
>>
>>855972
Thanks. But I think you understand that the attitude shown by people on this website never actually match their real attitude. Of course I won't be an abrasive asshole towards new people I meet on the other side of the planet.
>>
>>855901
>I'm Scandinavian
Why not come to america?
>>
>>855978
Maybe I will at some point.
>>
>>855768
>23
>depression
>existential crisis
Post-adolescent angst. You'll grow out of it in a year or two.
>>
>>855986
Hopefully.

Fuck off, weaboo. That's the least /out/ country in the world.

I would from experiance buy a cold Steel Kukuri. They can cut bamboo and shit
>>
Yet another thread of OP asking for /out/ related advice and getting nothing but assumptions thrown at him by edgelords. This board can blow sometimes. Hope it works out for you OP, keep your head up and your mind open.

>>
>>855768
>A gun
>A bullet
>>
>>856295
>giant, menacing looking ball of buzzing
Will be hard to stumble over

I guess a sewing kit would also be useful to extend the lifetime of your clothes.

Same for a shoe maintenance kit. And cleaning stuff for your cooking gear.
>>
>>855768

You shoukd smoke some weed and chill the fuck out. That with weight lifting and fucking, you'll be pretty happy.
>>
>>856291

>a random picture of trees

>>
>>855792

kek you must be kidding. International flights ain't the same as a greyhound to burning man, buddy.
>>
Hey op I'm not sure if the socialist doctors you have over there will go for it but you really aught to have some cardiac imaging done to try to diagnose your high blood pressure. I have a handful of congenital heart defects and not even my BP is that high.

Start with ab EKG, then an echo, but a cardiac mra will be the most effective diagnostic.

They did some of these.. Right? Or did they just do blood tests? Because a structural defeat of your heart or circulatory system isn't going to show up on a fucking blood test.
>>
>>859094
They did an EKG and found nothing. And my blood pressure have lowered dramatically since I came to terms with my situation.

It's definitely stress.
>>
Have you checked out >www.workaway.info

Been doing workawaying in Norway and Sweden for 4,5 months and will go to Canada next month. Workawaying is not focussed on farming and seems more relaxed to me. Never tried wwoofing though.

Have fun anon, I'm sure it'll do you good
>>
>>860894
Also any decent doctor knows his patient gets stressed the fuck out in the office so will have elevated blood pressure. Get a decent (read: costing about $100 usd) home blood pressure monitor that can do both arms separately and plugs into the computer USB. Omron is a good brand. Track your BP and upload it to Microsoft Health Vault it makes handy graphs and stuff. Have to step up and manage that shit.

Good luck
