Water belongs in lakes, rivers, and oceans. I know TXfag is sick of it too. Can't wait for Fall with no rain and low, low humidity. No more water falling from the sky or in the air as vapor. If you can't fish in it, it's shitty water as far as I'm concerned.

>But is it 4 dollars better?
yes. the material they use on scum frogs is much cheaper and the hooks are shittier. ive lost two scum frogs due to them getting ripped in half. never had that happen ever with any other brand of frog.
>>
How do I fish fast-moving rivers for smallmouth? I've had some success casting to slow-moving areas near fast water, but that only works sometimes. How can I read the river?

And it probably holds 500 yards of #100 mono
>>
>>848708
thats a Shimano Tiagra and the biggest one is rated for 2,445 yards of 100 pound test mono
>>
>>848707
Gotta find dat underwater structure. At least from everything I have read. Cast upstream and bring the bait back down right along the edge of that slow moving water where the bass will be chilling and waiting for baitfish to come by.

What's the difference between pic related and regular mono for leader material?
>>
>>848701
Whenever I see big ass reels like that I have the urge to make sure they are tethered to the fucking boat.
>>
>>848739
Spool size and price per yard
It's hard to find #80+ mono in less than 500+ yard spools
>>
>>848741
How are they attached? Those things don't look cheap, it would suck to lose one when you hit a wave or the hook catches something.

>>848738
I still get nervous doing that, but those things have that odd shape and deep diving angle where they seem to bounce off stuff pretty easily without hooking up.

I should fux with those tiny ones at that clear peacock lake next time I'm there. It anything the Mayans will go for it.
>>
>>848745
Yeah they're surprisingly hard to snag on hard bottoms
The lip catches then they sust kinda pole vault over the rock and the fish seem to really like it
>>
Should you only throw topwater baits if you see fish feeding off the surface?
>>
>>848745
they're bolted to the poll. those rod holder things they are in are pretty deep, no amount of bumps or hook snag is going to make them fall out

I want to go saltwater fishing while on vacation.

What is a good rod and reel combo for me and my dad?

We are not fishermen and this would be our first time fishing.

What kind of line/bait do you need to catch things in saltwater bay/oceans?

Will not be on a boat but will be on shore/pier.
>>
>>848786
Just get a cheap berkley pier combo from walmart.
>>
>>848792

>>
>>848786
How much are you willing to spend? The best general purpose bait is shrimp. Get some live ones from a local baitshop.
>>
>>848754
Depends. Ive fished gulf courses without any issue here in florida. I get more shit from HOAs. Basically if its a natrual like, nobody can own it. And it has a 15 foot easement around from the CURRENT waters edge. If its named. Fat chance its natural. But check your laws first.

They actually have a place under the reel on the bottom of the pole to attach a tether. That is what the blue cord is on this rod. All the poles in >>848741 have the loops for them, but there's no tethers.

I've inherited about a fishing kit with about 70 flies in it from my granddad. I don't know the first thing about fishing, is there a good way to find out what each of them's for or if they're worth anything?
>>
>>848768

>>
>>848796
Prolly around 60 bucks max.

>>
>>848821
between bait and everything? That's cutting it close.

>shakespeare tiger
>eagle claw saltwater tacklebox kit
>frozen shrimp or squid
>>
>>848793
Yeah but don't use the line on it
Get some #20 Berkley big game clear ($10)
Then buy some #50 mono for shock leaders, rigs, and bite leaders ($10)
You'll want to also buy a pack of regular barrel swivels($3), snelled hooks either size 4 baitholder or size 1 Aberdeen($3), some needle nose pliers, some pyramid sinkers from 1 ounce to 3 ounce (at least 3 of each($5)) and some gotcha plugs (I like red head with white body, pink with yellow belly, and red with yellow body, get one of each)($15) then get a bag of fishbites blood worm scent ($4-$5 should last the whole vacation) and a box of frozen squid ($5 should last the whole trip
Tie a few rigs like this
>Swivel
>6 in #50 mono
>Dropper loop
>10 inches of mono
>Dropper loop
>6-10 inches of mono
>large surgeons loop to attach and change weights
Then use a loop to loop connection to put a hook on each loop

Tie 20-30 feet of #50 mono onto your mainline with an improved blood knot or Albright knot, then either tie on a rig or a gotcha plug with a Palomar knot or improved clinch knot
To use te fishbites just follow the instructions on the package
To use squid defrost 1 or 2 squids and grab a sharp knife, cut the tentacles off and set them aside, then remove the mantle from the "head"
Throw the head in the water as chum
Cut off the little floppy things on either side of the mantle, cut those into strips, then put them with the tentacles
Cut up the length of the mantle and scrape out the guts so you have a sheet of squid, and toss the guts in the water
Cut the sheet of squid into strips 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch wide, then trim those to an inch long
That, the tentacles, and the floppy things are great bait

Fish the gotcha plugs with sharp jerks while reeling if there are blue fish or spanish mackerel around
You'll be landing fish plenty
>>
>>848819
I'll give you 25 bucks on PayPal to mail them to me
>>
>>848824
Nah for just rod/reel

>>848825
Why is line bad?

Not sure im quite up to all those knots yet. I am going on vacation in like 2 days.
>>
>>848826
Would you have sex with a furry fox for 25 bucks?
>>
>>848827
The line is old, won't cast well, and weak
If you're really worried about remembering all the knots just tie 5 or 6 rigs with the computer in front of you then buy a few of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0084EFCGG/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1472601641&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=quick+snaps+fishing and have them shipped express to wherever you're staying
Then you won't have to remember any knots, just tie them all in the hotel room with the video helping you and you just have to clip on the rig or lure you want to use

Just make sure you call the hotel and tell them to expect a package for you

Favorite Saltwater lure and fish you target with the?
>>
>>848860
That's the page number, you dip.
>>
>>848866
My favorites are:

Black+yellow devil horse topwater plug (trout/redfish)
Mirro Lure 2000 (trout)
Johnson sprite 3/4th oz gold/silver (gold for redfish and silver for trout)
Original rapala (flounder)
red jig head + white Gulp! shrimp (trout)
red jig head + chartruce grub tipped with cut bait

Sorry for so many but there are just so many I use. If I had to pick just two I'd go with the gold spoon & the gulp shrimp. Texas rigged Gulps! are also very effective on the grass flats too.

Go to a local tackle shop and ask them

id say buy down there, or, for like 15 bucks, you can just rent

Actually I go to the outer banks of nc with my family and spend two week's fishing the salt either every summer or every other summer
And furthermore nothing I've said is wrong
Gotcha plugs are the go-to for blues and spanish on the Avalon pier, my daiwa beefstick has held up great to everything from catfish to rays, sharks, and plenty more over the past 10 years, and for under 30 bucks I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one
I'm easily 5 times more passionate about saltwater fishing than I am freshwater, and, more likely than not I'll be in New jersey in mid October risking mugging, or murder by a crackwhore while fishing for blues and striper
I know what I'm on about, and have actually given advice to people who live in nc and saved their fishing day
Just because I don't live on the ocean doesn't mean I don't know about the ocean

Still looking for advice on rod and reel for saltwater.

Will a 7' rod be fine for beach and bay fishing?

I am about 5ft 6 with shortish arms.

Should I go longer?

Will shakespeare catch more be okay for once a year week of fishing an hour or so every few days?
>>
>>848887
Okay?
I've fished saltwater every week for 15 years of my life. You're an idiot and the only people who use the rigs you suggest are tryhards who are new to the sport and think they need to overcomplicate things.

For the love of god just crash your retarded shitbike already.
>>
>>848888
You want a rod where you can lob your bait as far as you can get it... Assuming your using like 6oz sinkers. A 7 foot should get you 100 yards easy.

But i always fish from piers or wade/walk shallows near mangroves
>>
>>848890
>who are new to the sport
That's exactly who I'm explaining to
Want me to teach them how to run a trolley rig? Maybe they'd be better off if I told them they have to buy a 200 dollar surf combo and learn to cast 100 yards if they Want to catch anything, if they're inexperienced and I told them "just tie up a fish finder rig" they'd see everyone else using two hook dropper rigs and feel like they got bad advice, decide that everyone here is an idiot, and never come here again except to tell everyone here that they're thick
Plus if they get into a mess of spot or Crocker or similar they'll be so excited to pull them in two at a time, they won't want to stop, they'll want to pitch a tent at the pier.

I'm not trying to teach them how to be professional anglers and land a 70 pound cobia in two days, I'm just trying to put them on some shitty little spot or croaker so they can wet their feet.
>>
>>848888

>>848878

just buy it when youre down there at the local shop, someone who knows the area will give you great advice, and it's better to get that kinda help in person
>>
>>848901
>step one: tie carolina rig
>step two: dig sand flea/bait hook with shrimp
>step three: walk into surf and cast with $30 walmart pole

Holy shit it's almost as if you don't need to buy into all the bullshit that the newbies at the pier use? drop rigs are the most retarded thing I've ever seen and every time I see someone using them I automatically assume they only know what they're doing from online guides and idiots like you.

you really don't realize how small 100 yards is until you measure it out. most of the time 100 yards is the center part of smallish lakes.

and yeah 6oz is about right. with my 7' medium action rod, I get about 15 yards for every 1oz. but because physics, after about 3oz or so, It starts dropping off. I have a friend who use to have these crazy 1lb lead sinker weights, [upside pyramid style] that we use to toss on the end of our poles, and see how far we could lob them down the road... [no where around here you need shit that big] I could get about 50 or so yards, with a 5'10" pole. lmao

Anyone have any experience fly fishing in salt, specifically Indian river lagoon area?

Currently the water is pretty murky so I've been using bright colored crazy charlie's/deceivers but I've had no luck so far this year. The only time I've seen schools of red move are in the marsh ponds that are virtually inaccessible without crawling though the marshland. I'm guessing my problem is not being able to reach the schools, but I should at least be able to land a spotted sea trout.

Any advice on color combinations or some technique worth trying?

I guess to prevent unnecessary damage to fish due to retards using treble hooks? Honestly I have no clue, if you've ever fished before you should know how to safely remove treble hooks without mutilating the fish. Probably since it's so close to the national park they have to be strict.

Story time.

At the Galveston fishing pier last night doing some bottom fishing (bait and wait) as we call it here in Galveston with my buddy. Old man maybe 20 yards away, his reel starts screaming like he hooked a boat. He hammers the drag down to full and it's still getting line peeled off.

Me and my friend run over and see his reel about to get bottomed out, "Boy this fish has got some shoulders on him" he says. He starts to feather the reel with his thumb and eventually stops the behemoth. At this point I could see the bare metal of his spool, the fish at this point assume is a monster black tip shark or sting ray gets a second wind and tears off for a second time.

The old man has to stop the fish at this point so he stops the spool with his thumb and snaps his 40 lb mono. I never though I would see anything like that in reel life let alone in Galveston.

The old man tells us he had about 380 yards of lncuding the bottom portion of line being 50lb braid.

>>
>>849373
I went with Ebay for my Revo SX. It was $160 everywhere, but a seller had them for $115. It ended up being an online store and it was $160 on their website but $115 on Ebay.

I was trying to figure it out, my guess is it was either a couple overstock or they sell a few things for the low on Ebay to try and get their name out so people come back to their website instead of the major retailers.

>>849374
Still haven't had one that bad.
>>
Speaking of meme casters I bought an Abu black promax 3 or something along those lines and I can't cast for shit. Heavier stuff is fine but weightless worms or 1/16tb oz weights in finess stuff is nearly impossible to get more than a couple feet if that. The brakes are all the way down and it still doesn't cast.

Feeling meme'd
>>
>>849391

>>
>>849391
>>849394
kek, I just checked and I didnt realize reels dont list that. only rods.

That's why people don't use them for 1/16oz panfish lures. But once you get to 1/4oz, it will almost always cast better than the same weight spinning reel.
>>
>>849358
I still haven't had any interest from bass in the chatterbait. I had a snek take a shot at it once. And I have actually been casting it quite a bit, especially once it gets dark. The water is still warm but that hasn't stopped the occaisional bass from hitting a Mepps.

So I want to have siwash hook on my 5/8 oz kroc spoon. Both of the treble hook and the siwash hook that came with it rusted pretty badly and need to change.

The siwash that came with it seem to be very big for the spoon size. I looks like a 4/0 or 5/0. The treble was around size 3 or 4 so I think size 1/0 and 2/0 siwash would fit the spoon better. Also, fishes around california surf seems to have pretty small mouth too, so I feel like a smaller hook will help. The spoon length is 2'3/4".

Only good for sea fishing and massive catfish/stripers and places where there's a lot of room the fish can run. Kids and inexpereinced fishermen who think you need to crank in a fish under the pure power of the reel are ignorant. You pull on the pole to pull the fish in then as you lower the pole you reel in the line while keeping it tight, repeat. Winching in fish just asks for something broken and you being tired

>>
My reel says the line capacities are
8/240
10/200
12/160

for mono. What's the heaviest braid I can put on it without issue ?
>>
>>849919
>If you can I guarantee it cost more than a similar baitcaster.

So? You have to pay for quality.
>>
>>849927
if you look at the braid packaging it gives the mono diameter equivalent. off the top of my head I know 30# braid is the same as 8# mono.
>>
>>849928

You're right, I didn't need to list that asterisk. You literally can't find a spinning reel that fits the criteria mentioned. Low profile baitcasters hold more line in a more compact package, that is a fact.
>>
>>849930
>>849919
My reels fit on my rods, not in my hands. I hold the rod and reel handle when I'm fishing, not the reel itself. Going on about low profile doesn't mean Jack. Who cares about your micropenis memecaster? 110 yards of 14lbs line? Why are you even using a memecaster for something so paltry as that? See >>849708 and >>849681 for how stupid that is. Do you even know what a memecaster and spinning reel are properly used for, kid?
>>
>>849927
12 pound mono is the heaviest you can put on there and it's equivalent in braid should be 50lb. However, braid casts a little less further because of the friction it creates so I would recommend 30lb braid if you want maximum cast distance and strength.
>>
>>849934

>Do you even know what a memecaster and spinning reel are properly used for, kid?

Yes, that's why I actually use both instead of just making uneducated remarks that the reel type that I dont use is useless and shitpost all day. You couldn't refute my point so now you are just trying your hardest to belittle me, typical. Low profile baitcasters have their place in bass angling and do offer unique advantages, this is indisputable. Just because they aren't what you prefer does not make them useless.
>>
>>849934
holy shit. you are literally mentally retarded. please dont talk about things in which you clearly dont know anything bout.

>>
>>849907
It looks straight. I mean it's a Shimano so it will work. I still say it might be worth checking out Bass Pro or Cabela's store brand stuff but I wouldn't hold it against you if you grabbed the Shimano.

>>849919
You're getting your pants in a bunch over nothing. Some of the saltwater spinning reels have really deep spools and can hold quite a bit. Memecasters are definitely more compact and lighter than most spinning reels that are made for 14lb-20lb mono, but line capacity isn't exactly a strength.

>>849929
I find that to be off a little bit. Quality mono is normally a little bit thinner, and in my experience 15lb braid is like 6lb mono, 20lb is like 8lb, 30-10, 40-12, etc.

>>849927
Don't go overkill with it. Just because you can run 150yds of 40lb braid doesn't mean you need to. 20lb is a nice weight on a medium spinning setup for bass and stuff. It will cast better than 10lb mono, you will have a little better capacity, and 20lb line should still be strong enough to bend the hooks on lures to rip them off of snags.

I was bass fishing with a large red-white spoon in a local farm pond. I caught 3 bass that were 1/2 an inch from being state records out of that pond.

Then....

I was bluegill fishing and had one on. Suddenly, the largest bass I've ever seen in my life swallows the bluegill, 3 times over. I couldn't hook it of course.

Later on, what I think was the same monster bass, took my red-white spoon. Not even a fight, just snapped my 20lbs line like it was nothing at all.

Every time I saw that thing the blood drained from my face because, judging from its size, it would have far exceeded state record. It was like a log with a mouth and fins.

Unfortunately, that pond is nothing but a muddy swamp area now because the owner let the bank erode and it emptied.

---

In another farm pond, during low water and drought, I caught a couple of blue catfish almost as large as this one. I wrangled around in the mud with them for 30 mins each before letting them go. They were just too big to take home. They were above state record, but it was the 1980s and no one really knew much about that in my area then. The owner of the pond got angry that I let them go.

Not much other than those two events. A bass in a stream at a relatives took four of my lures off 30lbs test line.

Oh you have no clue. That pond is smaller than my pond, but deeper. So it is about 30 feet round and 5 feet deep. The water was really low when I was there and you could see catfish backs all over the place swimming around. It looked like an over stuffed koi pond. Only it was ultra muddy. The ones I caught weren't even the largest in there.

The owner would pull down with his 3-wheeler and a 30lbs bag of dog food and feed them scoop fulls for about half an hour. They'd eat the entire bag.

The thing was his family never fished in it. They gaffed the catfish and ate them.

Farming catfish that way is rather common around here. I was going to do it, but I don't like the idea of feeding them dog food. Because, I'll be eating them and that doesn't seem healthy to me. It's a 3000. I was also looking at the 2500, but decided to get this one. It's super heavy on the 5'6" light rod I used to spool it, but the real rod is coming tomorrow.

Feels very smooth and well built. It's weird that reversing the reel unscrews the handle, but it might be a saltwater thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The sound the drag makes is orgasmic.

hi. i recently got into freshwater fishing and started off with the ugly stik combo

where do i expand from here? new rod and reel? i have yet to get into lures. working with about $200 atm

i've been told to look into baitcasters but they seem complicated and im a bitch
>>
>>850050
Why do you want a new rod if you only recently started fishing? An ugly stik combo should last years and catch you plenty of fish. Also baitcasters are _hard_ to use. I'd stick with spinning reels until you know why you want a memecaster and that the effort put into learning to use it is worth it.
>>
>>850046
I'd go straight for #20
>>
>>850056
Well I already bought and spooled the 15, but I will look into a second spool then, thanks. What's the advantage of 20lb over 15lb if I'm not aiming for anything over 10lb?
>>
>>850050
Yeah stay away from the memecasters for now
Get a Shakespeare excursion and spool it up with #8 or #10 Berkley trilene if you really feel you need to upgrade something but get a few New lures, some sizes of jigheads, some ewg 2/0-3/0 and 5/0-6/0 worm hooks, and some 1/0 octopus hooks
Assorted soft plastics- curlytail grabs, senko worms, craws, some flukes- a few split tail, and paddle tail, some other soft plastic worms.

>>
>>850061
Oh 15 should be good then, but if you're running jigs or frogs bass like to wrap up in things, and that extra strength is noticeable
And if you're in the salt you never know if you'll be snagging a stingray and if you do you'll wish you had a little more umph
>>

It's not too hard, tie a rag or other cloth over the barb, flip it of it's back (if it's hooked on the mouth or underside) unhook it then as you release it take the cloth off

>>850050
Is it the GX2 rod? I would say upgrade the reel next if you want to. Maybe something like a Pflueger President ($60) unless you want to go more expensive. If you want to start with lures, get a couple Rapalas and Rooster Tails since they are easy to use and probably some soft plastics and the stuff to Texas rig them.

Don't think about a baitcaster yet. Get down on a nicer spinning setup and get comfortable with all the different lures first.
>>
>>850178
Shakespeare excursion reels are near bomb proof, smooth, reliable, etc
Mine is easily 5 years old and I have not even considered an upgrade because I honestly don't feel like it would be hard to upgrade

Its the reel you buy thinking "ill upgrade later" but it's so good you don't see a point in upgrAding

>Sounds like it could be a bitch

I wish I could tell you otherwise but unfortunately my experience has been pretty rough so far. I should note, however, that where I fish isn't like open water fly fishing, it's much more inland so it feels like your at a lake or large river area but the water is brackish or full in salt depending on where you are.

It's a lot of imitating baitfish, I don't think I've used one dry fly while out there. I generally tie semi large flies, and it can be frustrating spending 10-20 minutes tying one at home just to lose it on a mangrove root.

It's still a lot of fun regardless. Get that good salt water smell going mixed with too much sun screen.

Those grass carp look goofy as fuck. Even more retarded than common carp. Used to only see common ones in IL and it is mostly grass carp here.

Such stupid fish. They will just be gluggng along near shore like 5ft away, then they will see you after you have already been standing there for 5min, they make a big splash and stir up all the mud as they dart off, and after all that they swim like 3ft away.

>>
>went wade-fishing in a river yesterday with a mepp's 1/8oz little wolf spoon (pic).
>water visibility was about 1 foot max
>caught 2 small bass, lots of panfish, and a big shiner

Well, at least I got to stock my pond with a couple bass.

This lure has this "strike attractor" on the treble hook. I love how that pink tube looks going through the water and all the panfish strike that tube more than the entire lure itself. After an exhaustive search I found a supplier that has a roll of the same stuff. I just hope that it will fit over the larger eye of my treble hooks.
>>
>>850335
They have those on the inlines too. Dressed ones have the little red feather and plain ones have the red plastic.

To me, those tubes remind me of coffee stirrers. If you could find red ones, get a box of those and cut them up.
>>
>>850334
>>850326
As someone who has eaten 100s of panfish, I can say that bass are far easier to clean for the amount of meat you get. The problem with the panfish are the bones. They are so tiny and missing just one can ruin your entire day.

I prefer eating catfish. Stronger flavor, less work skinning them, very thick muscle mass, no scales getting everywhere, meat and bones are almost completely separate entities when filleting them.

I've not had much experience with saltwater fishes, but I really liked red tail snapper I had many years ago. It was certainly better than the landlocked stuff we get here (salmon, cod, haddock, pollock, tilapia, etc.)
>>
>>850337
Yeah, straws were one idea. However, finding translucent ones in fluorescent pink or orange in the diameter range I needed proved difficult. Right now I'm waiting for a supplier to get back with me on an order overseas.

the main problem is that these treble hooks need a tube with an inside diameter of 4-5mm at smallest. Right now I'll be trying 6mm OD with 4mm ID. With some dish soap I think I can pinch them and get them to slide over. Otherwise, I'll have to use 2 meters of tubing for some smaller hooks for another line of lures.

Not rib bones.

They are called pin bones "false rib bones" and are located above the actual ribs. Bluegill and sunfish both have these. They suck.

http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-remove-pin-bones-from-fish-fillets-169839

I don't bother with full fillets on panfish because of these. With larger fish that have them it is easy to remove, but with bluegill and sunfish these are so small that it is extremely easy to miss and you end up with someone choking with it stuck in their throat. "Oh just eat bread with it!" tell that to the person eating bread with it who is now actually throwing up on your floor because they are choking so fucking hard.

That's not a bad idea. What weight line are you running on that Ugly Stik combo? A lot of people like having a lighter setup as a second rod if your main one is a medium weight with ~10lb line and you do a lot of pond and lake fishing with bluegill, crappie, or whatever. You could get down on a ~1000 size reel and spool it with 4lb mono and cast <1/8oz lures easily.

Or get a second, nicer medium combo. I always liked having at least 3 setups for freshwater- a medium with 8lb line, a light with 4lb line, and a MH setup with 12lb or 14lb line for catfish, carp, or heavy bass tackle.

What rod exactly do you have? Is it the Ugly Stik GX2 or one of the cheaper ones? Either way, if you are fishing lures a bit it may be nice getting a rod with faster action. If you are really going to stick with this, drop ~$100 on a new medium spinning setup and keep the Shakespeare as a backup or second rod.

Finally something useful for the imgur.

I still reccommend for people just starting to use braid, if you were running 8lb mono, go with 15lb or 20lb braid on that same reel. A few reasons- good quality mono is often a bit thinner than what PowerPro claims so your 8lb Trilene XS is probably thinner than 30lb Power Pro. Also braid isn't as smooth ad mono so good 8lb mono will cast slightly further than 30lb braid. Also 30lb is likely overkill on that spinning combo made for 8lb mono. Going with 15lb braid will cast further than 8lb mono, the reel will hold more line, and the braid will still be twice as strong as the mono you were running.

Ehh, the visibility in that case is irrelevant. 15lb braid is pretty damn thin, and mono isn't as invisible as flouro. Using moss green braid like a normal human bean, the line isn't really any easier to see than mono (for you or the fish). If you really want to see the line, hi-vis yellow mono or braid will be really close, especially considering the same strength braid will be much thinner than mono.

So pretty much just a shock leader.

The list of popular combos <$100 is on the Pastebin and Imgur. A Pfluger President combo is a solid choice for somebody wanting to upgrade a bit without getting too expensive. It is a really popular reel for a reason. Bass Pro and Cabela's will often have the $60 President on one of their $40 store brand rods for $80-$90. If you don't like those rods, just get the reel and find a rod in your price range that you like.

Any Abu Garcia or Shimano reel in your price range will be straight too. If you have a Dick's nearby, look on their website and see if they have the Shimano Sedona/Sellus combo in-store to check out. Abu Cardinal SX or STX combos aren't bad for $70-$90.

I've been using a Clinch knot for over 40 years now and haven't had trouble with them. I don't even use the "improved" Clinch knot. I also like being able to pull the coils back up the line to instantly undo the knot. I've never had them slip out before. That may be because I use more wraps?

Here's what mine looks like. When I pulled it hard enough to break, it broke the line about 2 inches up from the knot and the knot slipped only a tiny bit as evidenced by the remaining end of the line shortening. However, I suspect that amount of slippage is actually just the knot tightening up to its full strength, which is how the knot works. In fact, I have to use some force to push the knot around the snap it is tied to.

The line broke at 9lbs (6lbs test line,) on my scales.

On panfish? How long have you been eating fish? I've had 1,000s of fish and have butchered many 100s myself. There's always a problem with bones. 99% of the time the problem is just finding one in your mouth, but that 1% of getting it stuck in your tongue or throat really fucking sucks. The smaller the fish the more it happens because people simply can't see the bones.
>>
>>850443
When I was using 8lb test I lost several hooks using the improved clinch. I started using the palomar and that problem stopped.

If it works for you I don't see any reason to change. But if you google fishing knots breaking strength you'll see the clinch is one of the weakest.
>>
>>850400
>I still reccommend for people just starting to use braid

Nah they should start with mono so they can see how much better braid is down the road
>>
>>850447
Yeah, I see that, "slips, will not stay tied" for most of these.

Image from:
http://m.leeroysramblings.com/strong_knots.htm

When I do mine, I loop the line through the eye and back up to itself with about 3-4 inches of line through the eye. I pinch the line at the eye so it makes the hook/swivel stay down out of the way better. I then take the end of the line and the line between two fingers with one hand. Midway down between the end of the line and the hook/swivel I roll the line between two fingers of my other hand. This twirls the hook/swivel a lot. I thread the line end through the loop just about the eye of the hook/swivel. As I pull the end of the line tight (with my teeth), I keep the new loop of line tight so nothing turns into a mess and I slip the wraps down to the eye of the hook/swivel and tighten things up nicely.

Thus, I never really know how many wraps there are. I just eyeball it. Too many wraps and it won't tighten up properly and make out of shape loops all over. Too few wraps and it will easily slip. Thus, I think everyone else happens to be using far too few wraps on their clinch knots.

Or just throw it somewhere for scavengers to pick apart? I live in an apartment with a back patio and i just throw all my food waste out back and by morning time the possums have cleaned everything up.

>bringing more pest animals to a populated area

Whole fish are objectively better in every single way except personal preference of eating fillets since you're too babby to pick out bones.

Yes. It is extremely common.

This.

It is easy. Just do it with larger fish so it is actually worth while.

We are talking about fillet. Not talking about other methods of eating fish. 1st worlds don't' bat an eye about wasting food, kid.

You've never been outside much have you, kid? With or without food in the area, wild animals will scour every inch of ground every single night looking for food.

It's okay, mister. I understand that with your old age it's hard to perform simple tasks like tying your shoes and removing bones from fish.

it looks similar to how i tie my hooks but not quiet right.
i think it's called the universal knot in english i pretty much use it for everything. for some non loadbearing knots where i want to keep the loop i use the double surgeon loop.

for ropes like a hammock or anything i almost always use a quick release it's pretty automatic almost everything i tie is quick release.

>all of these people who can't fillet a bluegill

How dumb are you motherfuckers? Did your father never teach you how to clean a fish, or was he always at the office?

>Step 1
Cut down to the spine right behind the side fin

>Step 2
From the top of the fish, insert the knife until it hits the edge of the spine and cut until you can push it through, near the tail

>Step 3
Push the knife through, making sure not to go under the spine, then cut until you exit the tail

>Step 4
Gently rake the knife over the ribs until you get over them, and cut through

>Step 5
Slide the knife under the skin and remove it, or scale the fish before filleting

Now you have one bone-free fillet. You can also cut up from the tail across the entire body right through the ribs, then slice them out. It's not that fucking hard.
