I'm a year into getting a BS in Forestry and am looking to volunteer/work doing something related.
I'm in Arizona...How difficult is to get get a volunteer/paid position as a Firewatcher? Generally, what is the application/interview/screening process like? What do they look for? Do I just wait for them to post openings at the start of next year or is there a way to apply ahead of time?

Go to USAjobs.gov
They don't hire fire watchers really anymore. It's all done by satellite now.

This, there's a few manned firewatches in the Cascades but they're mostly there as an attraction for hikers.
The FS guy who was posted at Granite Mountain a few summers ago would bring cookies and hand them out to the kids that made it all the way up the trail.

Maybe if California did have them they wouldn't aways be on fire or at least they would take control of it far quicker.

That's cute, but modern methods still locate fires faster. The reason California is always on fire is because it's huge and has been in a constant state of drought for decades.

Not to mention the efforts to stop all fires has only built up flammable materials that used to be dealt with by regular smaller seasonal fires, or controlled blazes.

And people building houses in places they really shouldn't.
And industrial agriculture draining water sources faster than the natural water cycle can refill them.
Etc. Etc.
California is fucked and it has nothing to do with fire watches.
