Texas fag here with plenty of overnight experience, but mostly

You won't need some ridiculous low-level degree sleeping bag.
If it says 40F it'll be fine in 30F.
If 30F it'll be fine in 20F
if 20F then 15F
this is based purely on experience during cold weather related outtings.
I used to love warm weather but loath it now due to all the ticks, mosquitos, chiggers, spiders, fucking crawly bits and bobs. fuck that.
Just bring a neck cover, a warm fleece hat, a hand warmer or two and some hot-chocolate and whiskey.

At 30 deg you will feel uncomfortable without extra socks, a ski cap, and gloves, and an extra liner for your sleeping bag. If you're prepared you can be fine without that and might actually get too hot even with a fire. Get a face mask for extra comfiness

I slept outside on a cot no tent with my army system well into the teens. I used to love going on training in leanardwood during winter because it was so comfy to watch the planes dogfight while i drifted off to sleep in my double bag.

if you stay dry winter camping is pretty easy.
