Chaga grows like weeds where i live... For how much it sells in us? We could make somekind of business with it. Found this shit last time
>>
>>832431
Looking online it seems like they sell 500g of chaga for 32 dollars.

I've never seen chaga. Whether or not this is profitable really depends on how huge these things grow.

The ones that grow in my woods: Leccinum, Morchella, Gyromitra, Russulas if nothing better is fruiting. And of course the liberty caps from a nearby pasture. Recently found a bunch of pic rel growing in an old ants nest. They're supposed to be rare around here so I was very pleased with the find.

I'm fairly certain I found out what this is. Now my next question: say I take one of those things inside of it, called 'peridioles', which contains 'basidiospore', would it be possible to grow it out on say something like cardboard? Or will this be a futile attempt? I kind of like them and I already have a little infected stick that has some fruits on it that have matured nicely kept at home in a container with high humidity.

can someone answer me this; what is the point of hunting for mushrooms? are you looking for the psychadelic ones or tasty ones or what? I can't imagine wild mushrooms would taste better than the ones found at the store or else the store would carry them.

think of mushies like you do flowers, birds, or minerals. people like them, and a lot of them are rare and don't take to cultivation. there are people out there with every hobby possible, one of them is mushrooming. some people like to eat them, some study them, some take pics and enjoy searching for rare specimens, some find rare edibles that can't be farmed and sell them for big monies, and some people just like to get high.
>>
>>832402
what fungus is this?
>>
>>837084
>I can't imagine wild mushrooms would taste better than the ones found at the store or else the store would carry them.
just a reminder that what grocery stores carry isn't what tastes the best, but what i) looks the best, ii) lasts the best, iii) transports the best, iv) can be stored the best allowing for almost annual abundance, etc.

Some stores stock wild mushrooms, small green grocers or specialty stores, however they're often crazy expensive as they need to be found and harvested instead of the industrial production line style of growth and harvest for everything else.

Hell, one of the best restaurants in the worlds has their chefs foraging for local wild produce.
>>
>>837113
>one of the best restaurants in the worlds
i think a lot of them do this actually. the better the restaurant the more fresh, rare, and legit food is paramount to their menu. there's a real fancy place i know in sydney and they pay kids who live out in the bush 100km away to forage for mushrooms for them. the window is only a few weeks so you need an army of scamps out there digging
>>
>>836834

But yeah it doesnt surprise me. Im down in Melb, and if I owned a cafe or something I'd be definitely making connections in a few rural towns that have large pine plantations nearby.
>>
>>837084
You need to be more accurate. What are mushrooms you buy at the store? Do you will find the same kinds in the wild? Here in Italy we have a lot of edible varieties growing in the wild but almost no store sell them. Sure you will find fresh Boletus Edulis in some stores but, likely, they come from east Europe (Chernobyl?) and doesn't taste like the ones from my own mountains.
>>
>>837246
Here in Latvia stores only sell champignons or ''the common mushroom'' because it's easy to grow in a bulk. It's trash. It's what I call the pizza mushroom.

If you want to find any of the good mushrooms you need to do it yourself or go to a market.
Anyone who loves the taste of mushrooms pretty much has no choice but to pick their own. The stores don't even sell chanterelles even though they are so common.
>>
>>835841

For me, the whole culture of hunter/gatherer (Estonian here) and being brought up to appreciate them. Mushrooms are a cornerstone for being a human. It's like taking a miniature hike in the woods, but besides getting fresh air and being connected with nature you also bring home the fruits. And wild mushrooms taste a lot better than store sold mushrooms. Much like wild animals taste much better than store bought animal meat. Plus the stores don't stock real quality products, those you get from farmers/hunters/fishers etc. Plebs go to supermercado for food lol.
>>
>>832431
They sell tinctures of it here for €36 which is for 50ml, I dunno what weight mushroom that translates to. So dear
>>
>>837702
It doesn't translate to any weight of mushroom directly. Mushies have wet weight and dry weight given in kilograms (or grams for convenience). What you're referring to is the tincture volume of liters (or milliliters apparently a very small bottle). You'd need to know what amount of molarity of the "supposedly" good chemicals there are in the tincture and the absolutely enormously varying and completely unpredictable (for wild mushies that is, isolates can be predicted) concentration of the chemical in mushroom mass.
>>
>>837698
Yes there is something very speacial about mushrooms, espeacially wild ones. They are mystical. Cook them however you like they will always taste nice.

>>
>>838151
>go outside
>look around
>when you spot something take a few seconds to take in its various features

Keep doing this and very quickly you will start to see every kind of fungus, plant, shrub and tree as an individual, and they will stand out like so.

This is the first step you need to take, and after that you can start identifying them.

dont eat anything poisonous.

100% sure those are not. take a look at a regular a. muscaria. the warts are parts of the veil left on the cap, whereas this is the cap itself peeling. you should be able to remove the warts easily on amanita muscaria. the ring should be thin and hang like cloth if present, this is much too think and rugged. can't see the base clearly but it seems on the small side.
other than that, the cap is too dark in the middle, reminds me of parasol mushrooms, some of which are edible.

If you live on the West Coast of America "Mushrooms Demystified" by David Arora is highly regarded.

Even if you don't life in that area or even the US, it may be useful as he goes through ways of identifying mushrooms, their characteristics and where to look for them in the environment, their relationship to various species of trees etc.

There is also his smaller field guide "All That the Rain Promises and More: A Hip Pocket Guide to Western Mushrooms" which I don't own, but from reviews it sounds pretty good.

I live by the border of WA and OR, one of my friends is planning to take our group up into the mountains in September to go mushroom hunting. Besides that, we've only gone on one for-funsies expedition with him. Any tips? Last time there was a problem with me being way behind everyone, and I don't know if I was being rightfully careful in my search or if they were rightfully walking until the mushrooms were more obviously widespread. Also, is it necessary to cut them with a pocket knife, or just more convenient? Also, how does one deal with authorities in the possible scenario of getting caught when your mushroom hunting friend walks you through private forests without telling you (half-joking)

You can buy kits online to cultivate all sorts of edible mushrooms at home, including chanterelle, but you may or may not have to get some other equipment as well. A quick google search says you can also get them dried, if you don't mind that. If neither of those suit your fancy, you might just have to wander around your local stores and gently, politely harass the employees for any info they may or may not have.

How do you make 100% sure you have identified a mushroom?
Take Psilocybe cyanescens for example.
I think I found them, but I just can't be sure. I look it up and people warn others that there are a lot of lookalikes that are deadly.
I look that up and the only ''lookalike'' that looks even remotely similar is Galerina. Other ''lookalikes'' have completely different shapes and colors. Yet I still can't make sure I found the right stuff, there's just not enough information online.
Maybe if I had a microscope I could make sure by looking at the spores, but other than that I am going completely blind here. Eating any of these is taking a gamble.
>>
>>844241
Here's my ~99% procedure.
1. look at what it's growing on
2. look at the colour, young/mature if possible
3. look at the physiology, shapes of cap, gills, is there a veil etc.
4. pick one up and see if it bruises blue (for psilocybes). they also have a very distinct smell and taste which is never forgot

If you really want to go to 100%
1. take a piece of white paper and use a sharpie or something to paint half of it black (easier to see spores that are very light coloured)
2. lay a cap on it and leave it for half a day or so
3. look at the colour of the sporeprint
4. scrub some of the spores on a glass sheet with a drop of water and microscope it to see the shape

Fly Agaric? The muscaria could kill you, admittedly it was used in some shamanic rituals but you'll just end up hurting yourself. Chop it up, put it in some milk, let flys drown in it. Dont let the dog drink it.
>>
>>846732
Dehydrate it completely. Breaks down the poison. Still might make you puke depending on how much you eat. I didn't find them to be very tasty.
>>
>>846732
All the cases of adults dying from Amanita Muscaria are unconfirmed. I don't think it's even possible, even at extremely high doses.
I've spoken to people who do these and some of them suggest eating them raw.

I won't be doing that though. I will heat it up in almost boiling water for 30 min. That should get rid of the ibotenic acid.
Putting it in milk doesn't make sense to me, because that does nothing about the ibotenic acid, which is what makes you nauseous.

Drank the shroom tea 2 or 3 hours ago.
This is absolutely terrible. It kicked in after 1 hour, I started sweating cold sweat, felt like I had smoked some shit weed and then I vomited.
Now all the bad symptoms seems to have gone away and I feel mildly euphoric.

I understand now why shamans used to use this stuff. It's like it makes you feel like shit, you vomit and then you feel a bit better than you felt before taking it.
They believed that you are cleansing yourself from bad spirits.

>How do you make 100% sure you have identified a mushroom?
>Maybe if I had a microscope I could make sure by looking at the spores, but other than that I am going completely blind here.
As this >>844396 guy explains psilocybe cyanescens and related wood loving psliocybe have a distinctive smell like leaves or wood, like the substrate they usually grow on but stronger.

I was very anxious my first few times picking but after a while the differences between psilocybe woodlovers like cyanescens or subaeruginosa and galerina are distinctive.

The psilocybe stem should be fairly strong and woody with some bendy give, whereas galerina stems tend to be frailer and break when you attempt to bend them.

Color can vary due to phenotype variations and growing conditions so it isn't a sure sign of species but taking a spore print will determine whether it is a Galerina or not.

The Galerina has a rusty brown spore print like pic related- a psilocybe cyanescens or subaeruginosa will produce a dark chocolate brown with a purplish oil slick tinge.

Psilocybes will also produce blue bruising when the stipe or cap is pinched. Pinch the mushroom and instantly or after a few minutes they will produce distinctive blue bruising (on the cap it may appear aqua).

So if you do the pinch test and a spore print you should be fairly certain whether the subject is of the psilocybe genus and if cyanescens is the most common species and it was found in an environment with a lot of wood/leaf litter it is likely that sp.

To further bullet proof your identification upload images on sites such as mushroomobserver dot org, or shroomery dot org's hunting and ID forum.

If you are really enthusiastic you can microscopically examine the spores but mistaking cyanescens for a taxonomically near identical wood loving psilocybe sp. such as subaeruginosa (An Aussie native which has naturalized in some parts of the US),doesn't matter.

In europe people ate shrooms for millennia and the same in weebstan. in yurop where i live the parasol mushroom (macrolepiota procera)is considered a good find, but its easily confused for lepiota lilica which is deadly poisonus. i dont know what part of the world youre in and how many lepiota species grow there.
if its a macrolepiota (is the cap wider than your hand?) its almost certainly okay to eat, if not id stay clear. if you remove the cap and it starts reddening at the scar its deadly

There are red/pink ones too, here. Not tasty? Bummer. There's a similar shroom I've heard called Ruffles that looks like a mass of lasagna noodles, and that one is tasty.

Anybody want to go picking in NW OR? Chanterelles, oysters, lobsters, and COTW are starting to come on, and I'd like to go with folks that know other sp. hereabouts so I can learn them. I'd like to learn Russulas, lepiota, hydnum, and particularly, boletus sp.

lol wrong on both counts. Don't listen to this guy. Never ever believe easy generalizations about IDing mushrooms---there are more exceptions to rules like this than there are species that meet the criteria. Moreover, species composition varies great from place to place and even if these generalization are true for his area (spoiler alert: they're not), they may not be for yours. Don't ever forget that you are considering a hobby that can kill if you fuck up hard enough.

Look for a local club or society. That's your best bet. Most of the time it's older folks who are super laid back and happy to teach. Just don't be surprised if most of them only know edibles well.

It's worth noting that you don't eat the whole thing, just the outer edge where it's softer. Eat the hard bit and you'll just shit it out in chunks that are still orange. Also know that some people have a bad reaction to chicken-- of its your first time you may want to start with just a little and see how you feel. Nice find!
I like to marinate it in a teriyaki kinda sauce for 12 hours or mor, then pan fry it. It can be a little tough if you do cook it like you might a chanterelle.
>>
>>863468
thanks for the tips. i think i found it a little bit old (although i'm sure it wasn't there last weekend) because the shelves are really big and starting to look sort of pale. it does seem as though the outer edges are still soft and supple. i might give it a go!

It's almost certainly in the genus amanita.
I'd hazard a guess that it could be Amanita phalloides, based on the the greenish tint to the cap.
For your information, most amanitas are poisonous to a degree-- and a few will kill you. Like 'skip the doctor, call the priest' kill you. Only the very experienced should pick amanitas to eat.

Where did you pick this? What sort of environment did you pick it in?

the best guides are region specific. On the off chance you're from northern california, I can personally recommend Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast (Schwarz and Siegel) and California Mushrooms: The Comprehensive Identification Guide (Desjardin, Wood, and Stevens).
Probably the most popular pocket guide for north america is 'All That the Rain Promises and More', which is very good but far from complete. For the total novice, I would recommend ATTRPAM or a good, region-specific guide.

Even better than a book is joining a local club or society-- you will learn more from a day in the field with an experienced hunter than a month alone with a book.

Something I usually tell to novice mushroom hunters:

>There are no simple rules to follow. Try to learn both edible and poisonous mushrooms, it could save your life or someone else's.

1-- looks like a russula sp. Probably not edible. There are edible species that look like that (see: Russula xerampelina), but I don't usually waste my time with them.

2-- Woolly Chanterelle (Turbinellus floccosus). Inedible. Will make you sick.

3-- Can't say for sure, but i'd hazard a guess that it could be a false chanterelle like Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca.

here in MI those are the only edibles I have found so far

of course you never know when exactly they'll be growing, the weather here hasn't been at all consistent, but at least it is cooling down

if you have large ones, you can always try slicing, dehydrating, and then grinding them into powder....I have some dried but I haven't tried seasoning with them yet (the young ones I found last week are currently being eaten in some stir fry)

I'd love to find some others to make some mushroom jerky with
>>
>>868210
That's a neat idea, would the hard ones be good on a pizza? Meaning would the high heat make them softer?
>>
>>868212
I highly doubt it; generally I believe you're not supposed to overcook them....if they're starting out tough the only other thing I would try would be something low and slow in a crock pot

I've simply cooked them in a skillet with a little butter till just starting to brown

if you don't believe me how tough they can get, fry up a small piece and try it
>>
>>868220
Cooking up a hard piece atm do you remove the skin/stem?
>>
>>868244
what I do is use a knife to scrape the "scaley bits" off the top, trim off any stem and check to see how far into the middle it stays tough

you could just cut from the outside in, going around from the edge till it gets harder to cut through
