Why are carabiners intrinsically so damn cool?
>Go to /out/doors store
>Go to climbing gear section
>See carabiners
>Fingerfuck them for a good 20 minutes
People probably thought that I have autism because didn't buy one because I'm a poorfag neet.

Weight-rated or go home.
>inb4 7kN and 8kN
You need to be 105lbs or less to use the 7kN white biner and 120lbs or less to use the others as a life safety device. OSHA standards say weight-rated equipment needs to have a tensile strength equal to 15:1.
That's a device that holds 15 pounds for every 1 pound that you weigh.
7kN = ~1600lbs. 1600lbs/15 = ~105lbs.
8kN = ~1800lbs. 1800lbs/15 = ~120lbs.
Here's a link to a biner that holds 31kN:
http://rocknrescue.com/acatalog/R-N-R---Poseidon-Non-Locking-Aluminum-Carabiner-RC008.html#SID=456
31kN = ~7000lbs. 7000lbs/15 = ~470lbs.
Now THAT'S safe.
>>831067
My keychain biner is 8kN. Is this good enuff?
>>831226
Did you even read his post; you need to go home.
You need to multiple the amount of keys by the density of the oxygen 3 days prior to going outdoors to confirm if the carabiner can hold that many keys.
I personally would not buy any carabiner less than $500, you are just asking for shit quality.
You probably buy tarps under $1000 too.
>>831234
>post
kek'd
I wonder if 1500 lbs of tensile force applied to a person through a carabiner is even survivable.
>>831234
>You probably buy tarps under $1000 too
That thread was pure gold. I miss those days.
>>831226
That biner is fine, the other guy is exaggerating. Even good stuff like petzl is has more or less that kn values.
>>831067
>31kN long axis
>Doesn't specify open-gate strength.
>Doesn't specify cross-load strength.
Surely you wouldn't trust your life to unknowns?
Oh God. I remember when EVERYONE had one on their keychain
Currently rocking one of these sweet thangs on my keychain. I use the bottle opener all the time.
>>831047
OP you've got a fucking death wish posting using non-locking beaners.
>>831047
if you like clicking carabiners you should play with some cams. they'll blow your fucking mind.
>>831363
Me too, senpai

AAAAAY NIGGA
>>831226
Should be 22kn, that's ce and UIAA standards
>>831067
>tfw you realize you weigh to much for your keychain
I'm going to ask for a refund since osha says you need to have 15:1 ratio to clip two things together regardless of use.
>>831407
thats fatwood?
>>831226
Good enough to hold keys to your belt or food to a tree branch but not enough to use as a life safety device.
>>831247
>the other guy is exaggerating.
It's an OSHA standard, so you're saying OSHA is exaggerating? If you don't plan on using it as a life-safety device then screw the ratings, but if you're going /out/ I'd suggest getting one that's rated to hold your fat ass up off the ground - just in case.
>>831336
Surely. It's just an example for the plebs so they can see these biners exist and are ~$10USD.
>>831440
>I'm going to ask for a refund since osha says you need to have 15:1 ratio to clip two things together regardless of use.
>regardless of use
You ignorant twat - OSHA says you need to have 15:1 ratio for life safety devices. I figured context clues would be enough but alas; you've proven your arrogance knows no bounds.
Good to see the contrarians coming out of the woodwork - I was starting to think this board was full of respectable denizens.
wtf do you even use them for?
i've gotten a couple from the air force and I have on on my vest, but only keep gate keys on it
I cant think of many uses where I'll say "wow I'm glad I had that d clip"
>>831481
Post an example of a good carabiner then
>>831483
>wtf do you even use them for?
Various riggings - food containers tied to tree branches, gear clipped to packs, climbing anchor (trees, utility poles, cliff faces).
>>831486
Here's a Petzl non-locker for under $10USD that's weight rated and comes with a pdf spec sheet.

>>831441
Yeah found it in NZ and made some keychains from it
>>831505
>31kN = ~7000lbs. 7000lbs/15 = ~470lbs.
>Now THAT'S safe.
>posts a biner that has 23 kN maximum strength
what the fuck are you up to, mate?
>>831394
A couple weeks ago I was watching videos on youtube about that piece of gear, it's lovely.
> leaver biner is best biner
>>831510
>what the fuck are you up to, mate?
OSHA's 15:1 standard, m8.
23kN = ~5170lbs
5170lbs/15 = ~345lbs
You need to be less than 345lbs to use this biner safely. By these numbers one Spirit biner could safely hold 2 people assuming they are both around 170lbs each. Otherwise, it would hold one neckbeard chinner and all his cum-covered weeb figurines with ease.
I'd say the Spirit is also very safe you cheeky cunt.
>>831523
fair enough, thanks.
>>831510

>>831528
It's just some simple research and math but you're welcome.
My rantings about the OSHA standard aren't trivial shitpostings. I just don't want to read or hear about one of you anons getting killed because your rigging failed, and the OSHA standard has proven to be a safe and reliable policy for over 30 years now.
>>831510
>thirteen 50' coils of rope
>lecturing other people about apprpriate gear
kek. have fun passing all those knots, faggot.
>>831505
You clip a carabiner to a cliff face?
>>831721
pic related - this is not a difficult concept to grasp
>>831725
i don't trust those things. hammering a rivet into a crumbly rockface? fugno.
>>831726
They're used world-wide every day by workers and recreation climbers alike.
http://howtorockclimbing-4u.blogspot.com/2012/05/technique-for-rock-climbing-anchor.html
>>831725
I'm well aware of that. Nobody who is a climber says they clip a biner to a cliff face. You would just say to clip a bolt.
>>831742
I didn't say I clipped it to a cliff face, you inferred that on your own.
>>831725
Who the fuck clips to rapp rings instead of the bolts themselves? Also 3 is major overkill on a bolted anchor like that. Two is completely bomber.
>>831744
>complaining about a stock photo
You must be a thrill at parties.
>>831743
The post I quoted said exactly that.
>>831746
Since we are discussing this on a "discussion board" and not at a party talking about stock photos your argument is invalid.
Prove what I said is wrong.
>>831747
No, it said:
------------------------------
>wtf do you even use them for?
Various riggings - food containers tied to tree branches, gear clipped to packs, climbing anchor (trees, utility poles, cliff faces).
------------------------------
Nowhere above will you find "I clip my carabiner to cliff faces". It says I use my carabiners as a climbing anchor when climbing cliff faces, you inferred that I attach them directly to the cliff face.
It's called "Reading Comprehension" and you should see about taking a class for it.
>>831750
I didn't say it was wrong, I just implied that you're awfully nit-picky about a stock photo.
Seriously, can nobody read on this board?
>>831481
Yes it is? That's a black diamond positron screw lock. I use those for anchor building
http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/climbing-carabiners-quickdraws/positron-screwgate-BD2102830000ALL1.html#start=8
>>831725
I feel like that's a clustered anchor
>>831759
Now that I have the specs in front of me, let me correct your original post:
>>831226
>My keychain biner is 8kN OPEN-GATE, 25kN CLOSED-GATE. Is this good enuff?
Now that we know it's 25kN MBS and not 8kN MBS, I will correct my statement:
>>831481
>Good enough to hold keys to your belt or food to a tree branch AND good enough to use as a life safety device.
Now that we corrected your fuck-up and adjusted my correct response to your incorrect specs this conversation went much more smoothly. See how easy that was - to do some basic research and not post misleading info?
>>831758
You come off as sounding like somebody who claims to be a climber but really has no clue what they are talking about.
>>831787
>You come off as sounding like somebody who claims to be a climber but really has no clue what they are talking about

Yep you can bet it. I like not being fat better than having 10 dollaridoos.
Also you seem mad as fuck and worrying too much about my financial situation, are you a fatlard? It's a rhetoric question btw.

Says the guy making a thread about not having any.
You can tell yourself youre living the dream broke and staying with your mom but everyone including yourself knows thats not true.
>>832128
Dude I don't really care about what some guys on a botswanan forum say. I live the comfy life and that's the truth, giving up some material things is worth to allow me to maintain it.
>>832090
But I'm not attacking you?
>>831769
M8 someone asked for a thread with a generic topic and you went on an autistic rant about something no one was talking about.
It's like op says what's your favorite /out/ rifle and then the first post goes on about how you need a .375 H&H magnum or stay in because some guys might happen to live in Africa and might need to shoot a rhino incase it charges. When most people will never run across anything other than a rabbit.
Or you go on that everyone needs a full size axe and shovel because a few people that go out happen to be smoke jumpers and might have to take care of a forest fire. Even though the only fire damn near anyone will see is their camp fire or stove.
>>832090
what the fuck? holy autism
>>831363
>not being able to open a bottle with random objects including other bottles, lighters, and basically any hard edge
>>832282
Using a rated carabiner for non-climbing applications is less about strength and more about quality. Non-rated carabiners are, for the most part, pieces of shit. Even if you never put load on a shit carabiner, it's probably still going to break in some way. For example the gate breaks because it's a piece of shit. You can get fully rated carabiners that are roughly the same size as those small unrated pieces of shit for under ten dollars.
