What got me /out/ first was learning river gold panning. It's pretty cool, especially where I live because there are plenty of mountain streams and forests. It's nice, plus you get gold.

Don't do that op. Get a baitcasting reel and a decent rod with 10-12 pound mono. Cheap rods have cheap reels that won't cast 20 pound line right.

In general, if you want to start going camping just find a local camp site and test the waters. You won't fuck up and die because you will be surrounded by other campers. Bring a tent/hatchet/paracord/knife/cooler/ice/few liters of water/dry cereal/some protein that you can carry, such as jerky or nuts/a tarp/lighter/magnesium bar.. Those are some of the basics. If you have all that you will have a good time.
