Scarpa nangpa-la.
The only issue i have is they clog with mud when it's super wet and they aren't the best in wet rocks.
>>

I hike short distances in my tevas all the time. I bring them for crossing streams, general wading, and camp shoes. But once I put them on for wading or crossing I keep them on until they dry or the terrain requires boots.

there are $200 hiking sandals out there but I prefer to take my 10 year old $30 tevas and hike mainly in boots.

also, OP, I use the old oakley summer combat boot as my main boot. I had a pair when they stopped making them and bought another just because I loved it so much. I have like 3 pairs of sv2 that my unit used to buy me, I use that for a winter boot since it is goretex.

The finest footwear ever made. God himself said "I wish I had a pair of those" after he blessed the world with them. I'm frankly getting tired of all the shitposting and trolling going on. My moabs have recently turned into elf shoes and I am looking for something new. My search has so far been fruitless. Can anyone suggest a good, light, long lasting, earthy tone (but not shit brown) shoe for light difficulty hiking? I would prefer not mids or boots.

Trail runners, look for Asics, New Balance, Saucony, Brooks, or Salomon. You don't need much more shoe/boot for what you're doing and remember 1 pound on your feet equals 4 on your back.
>>
>>826725
Get some comfy trainers. You are looking for something with decent traction that fits well. Trail runners usually have better traction and more durable rubber so that is a good place to start.

Even strayed off the beaten paths for shortcuts through thickets, but keep in mind it was very dry conditions (no wet grass or shit). I'd go ahead and ignore most of the bitching that goes on about them on this board, the build quality on all of the stuff I've had from them, that bag, various trousers, jacket and a fleece has all been pretty top notch. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet as long as you're happy with the design and sizing I think you'll have something you'll love.

I bought the sythesis gtx's a few months ago before I left on a trip to Oregon. Walked over 30 miles on really steep terrain in them without breaking them in. One foot got a blister and both had pain in the balls of my feet. Not sure if worth yet. Bought some new insoles and taking them on a trip to Zion in 2 weeks.

This. I just drove and hiked all around the USA for the past year. I have fucked up feet too, born with club foot on both feet. Most shoes or hiking boots I need to wear in chafe me bloody because my feet are so funky after surgeries when I was younger (thank god my parents could afford it, or I wouldn't be able to walk). I bought Merrell Moabs based on the recommendation by a friend before I went on this trip. I didn't feel any discomfort at all, I hiked in them, scrambled up bluffs, etc. right off the bat expecting some discomfort after trying ot break them in. Nothing. I've never in my life had a pair of shoes/boots/evenfuckingsandals with the same result.

I will buy Merrels forever. My mom also unknowingly bought some years ago before she went to Switzerland and she always said how much she loves her boots and always wears them everywhere. Just realized a few weeks ago they were Merrels too. Great boots at a reasonable price.

I got a part of Crocs for Christmas and tried them out once on a small hike for fun, and holy fuck they are amazing.
Crocs are stronger than gods boner and comfy as hell. I have used them for every hike since my first with them and they have not regretted it once.
>>
>>832274
Just wear them around the house or for a short walk, 10 miles aren't really gonna need an extremely well broken in shoe. Modern boots are made to perform well from the first step on.
If the shoe hurts you or gives you blisters from a 10 mile walk, then no breaking in will help either.
If you really wanna make sure the shoe will make it, try it in many differents terrains (paved roads, steep slopes up and down and across etc.)

looks like something goths would wear on the way to their 'occult meeting in the nearby grove'.
not practical at all, not for proper hiking and mountain climbing anyway.

I had a pair of Trazeta boots that lasted me 4 years of constant wearing, summer or winter, in the city or out hiking. got a similar pair last year, same brand and model, got a hole in the sole after less than 6 months. they just don't make them like they used to.

These boots have been used from 1956 to 2015 in the french army.

A new pair cost 120€ but ,like i said, now you can find some used pair for 15€ only.

Maybe its not the best hiking shoes but when you do outdoors activities on a budget it does the work.

You used them so long? Here in Germoni there were terrible boots from pretty much the 1900s to about mid-80s, but ever since that they've been making better shit and have been re-thinking the concept
I was conscripted in 2006 and I got relatively modern ones then, which after wearing in the army I also occasionally did afterwards, so in total I easily put >1000km on them before finally the heels and toebox leather gave up a couple months ago
Bought the still similar follow-up model from milsurp a couple months ago and now that they're broken in (ca. 100km) I can't complain, they're very good in anything that isn't high summer (=very dry and hot) conditions
Waterproof and comfy

>>837717

Yes they were used for all this time but mainly for low class soldiers.

Now that the army dont use rangers anymore they sent a lot of them to the "gendarmerie" (its like the rural police) so in some way they are still used.

The new french army shoes (pic related) is provided by you german comrade, by a company called Haix.

I'm not sure about all of that. The men who wear them are made for those things, the boots happen to go along for the ride.
>>
>>837975
You have to consider thst military boots are always a huge compromise.

The gotta be cheapish beacuse you gotta buy tens of thousands

They have to fit a broad range of feet

The must suit a wide range of terrain types and climates

You must be able to hike, run jump, crouch, climb in them

They have to last long

And all that boils down to boots that can do anything but nothing very good.

Civi walking boots on the other hand are much more personalized for their respective wearer, terrain etc what makes them better suited for pure hiking but less as a general combat boot.

I understand ex soldiers who hike in their old boots because they are used to it. But I wouldnt recommend it for anyone else (ie. Buying brand new military boots for hiking)

I'm 100% convinced there was not a better military boot than this until well after the Vietnam-era of equipment.

Taipan GP Combat Boots.

Not very comfy, but that's the only thing wrong with them, and they're damn good. Aussie cadets still wear these ones.

Everything is right with them. Just try to name one flaw. Got that direct moulded rubber sole, and just look at the stitching on that motherfucker. There's that nice little groove at the bottom, I never really figured out what it was for, but I still like it. Eyelets are super strong as well. Never seen anything on these boots break in my life.

I wear them mostly just cause I don't really want to wear anything else. My favourite shoes for everything.

The comfiest boots I ever wore was a pair of "G-Star" boots, some kind of american denim brand or whatever. thru hiking with these next year. Starting out in feb, willl use these in snow and wet conditions. Boots will get soaked too, no boot is truly water proof when you're outside everyday hiking in wet conditions. You want trail runners, they will dry out easily

So I've only been /out/ in military life, for long rucks we laced our boots like this for less stress on the ankle. Is there a need for it in smaller boots?

Just got issued some new Combat Boots (Left), decided to wear them today on a 10 mile walk.
They're rigid as fuck but offer loads of support, really nice on the uneven terrain. Pretty horrid when it came to a bit of light running but I'll wait until they've worn in more to fully judge that.

Otherwise my civvy boots (Middle) are amazing. Despite all the shit that gets thrown around about Berghaus they have proven to be amazing on med-long walks.

Also just ordered some Cloud running shoes for rocky surfaces. Their other shoes are amazing for long runs so thought I'd give them a shot.
>>
I honestly think Magnum Elite II are the best /out/ footwear ever made.
Mine have had regular use for 7 years and there's not a stitch out of place. Totally waterproof (walked through rivers with them), very comfortable, amazing grip.
I couldn't ask for more to be honest, I have a few pairs of boots but these take the cake in terms of performance by miles, would recommend

I'm flexible about these points, particularly if it means greater durability.
Anyone got a good recommendation?

What boot would one recommend for hiking through snow/slush?

I'm not crazy enough to be hiking through shit I need actual snow shoes or spikes for, but something that I can walk easy trails with without slipping on packed snow

So far I've been looking at the merrel fraxion since its sole cuts my eyes just looking at it, but I would like something sturdier if I could, or in a 8 or even better 10" length

I got Haix Bergstiefel leicht (Mountain boots light)

They were made for german mountain troops - but not as an alpine boot for serious shit you need spikes for.

So what it has:

It's stury as fuck (although you cannot change the sole)

The sole is stiff but soft enough for regular walking from paved ways to rocks in the mountains BUT YOU CANNOT USE SPIKES!

Aktually its more of a tough trekking boot on steroids. Here in Yurop you can get them brand new from around 170-200 bucks.

If you wanna know more, ask me. And never ever buy used surplus boots: They were worn for long time by one owner. The insole has formed around this wearer's feet and can seriously fuck up yours

Wow bro, if you like cheap-ass chink magnums that much, you'll be drooling if you ever get yourself stuff from Meindl, Haix or Salomon or Hanawag.

Trust me: I wore cheap boots for years too and was happy as can be. Then they died after several k miles of hiking. I got myself Salomons and I was overwhelmed.

Enjoy your Magnums as long as they last - but when the day comes, get yourself something more expensive and enjoy a foot-gasm

Nigger, its impossible to fuck up with Lowa - although they can fuck you up if you got wide feet. Lowas are pretty narrow in my opinion.

I like em. Simple design. Easy to clean. They're warm. Havent tried em out in winter but it's getting close. I usually get a really bad ache with new boots because of my flat feet. Havent had that with these, break in process was easy on the feet and they're not that expensive. I condition them after every trip and besides the creases from walking they look brand new.

Would def recommend.

Wear these to work everyday. Hold up better than any boot I've worn.

Why would any grown man go on a hike with such brand new boots? I'm 34 years old and I hike for about 18 now. And i wore every new pair of boots for at least two weeks of everyday activities before I even thought about taking them out for a hike. IAnd: I had the last blister when the twin towers were still intact.
>>
>>849288
Sounds like a problem that can be solved by socks and tighter lacing. But then again: You have to feel confident with yer boots. Do you have money back guarantee? For how long?
>>
>>849564
I thought I had them broken in, id done six miles tabs in them with more weight before this happened and never got any blisters, same with the previous boots I had
They need to be broken in extremely thoroughly, there was one tiny bit of my boot that hadn't molded properly and it did that in the last ten miles
>>
>>849573
Well, When I hike in new shoes, I put duct tape around "those spots" on my feet for at least a month.
>>
>>849573
Yeah but seriously dude: Look a tthis >>849472
How the hell could you let it go that far??

I mean, if I have the slightest feeling I get a blister, I stop, drop shoes and socks and tape the whole area.

But a blister of this size needs extreme neglecting. No bilster that size develops without pain. So why didnt you just stop and took care for your feet instead of just walking???
>>
>>849565
its okay with socks but it can become a problem when the leather looses his stiffness. money back only for unused schoes

Well, thats shit. So if you find out problems during breaking in, you cannot replace them...

But if you can control it with socks: Use them until they become uncomfortable. I mean, its Meindls, it should be some years until the leather gets too soft

I've only ever seen the box lace on the top two. It's really used to keep pressure off your ankles on the uphills. More mobility and whatnot. So one would assume any boots that have laces at that level could benefit from it.

>>849799

I literally felt nothing until we stopped moving, I was taking pain killers for a migraine on the day so I think that masked it a bit, id taped up the problem areas of my feet and had never so much as got a bit of chafing on that spot before

I'd done way harder things than that before and had never got anything like that blister, stuff over way harder ground with way more weight

The medic said it was the biggest blister he had ever seen

I have flat, wide feet and overpronate when standing. I've tried 3 different shoes recently and none have worked. Merrell Moab wides were too narrow, The Wide keens I bought were too tight on my right foot, and with the New Balance Leadville v3's I bought the arch the shoe wanted me to have didnt match up with my non existant arch on my left foot and caused major pain.

I'm at my wits end, going to Nepal in November to trek for 2-3 weeks but can't find a goddamn shoe. I'm thinking I may need to look at a minimalist shoe, or get custom inserts. Altra's look like they might work out to. But at the end of the day my feet are fucked and I really don't know what to do.
