They probably want to know what gear to buy before they start going out. A backpack is a good place to start. The best ones are from companies like Triple Aught Design and Mystery Ranch. They are expensive but bomber. What to put in the bag? A compass for starters. Sunnto A-30L is all you need. Flashlight. Or headlamp. Hiking boots. Salomon Quest 4D gtx are the best.

and

>>808119 has it right.

No one goes and buys a full set of top-tier gear first time around.

Buy some boots, maybe a cheap tent, hike for a day.

Do a couple day trips until you get used to your pack and then spend a night.

Hike some more, spend two nights.

Read some books, do some research.
Try stuff out and see what works well.

Go further and further until you're happy with what you're doing.

the thing about going outside is that anyone can do it, just keep your head about you and don't make it too hard on yourself when you're starting out.

Save yourself time and money and read Backpacker Magazine Best Gear 2016 or even back issues.

The only recommeded piece of gear I've bought from thier Editor's Choice lists was the Snowpeak Mini Hozuki.

Took it back to REI for full refund to spend on better gear.

go to goodwill, buy some boots and a backpack. go to walmart buy a 10 dolllar fixed blade knife and a flashlight. pack a few bottles of water and some crackers and veggies/fruit. go for 3 hour or so hike in the local outdoors to see if you like it first

The "candle mode" sucked and it was awkward to turn on and off. Love the REI return policy.

My new paradigm for camp lamps is LED, USB rechargable LiIon ONLY.

All mine have dual function of USB charging.
>>
Just go do something. My first backing trip was 2200 miles of hiking. Just go do want you want
>>
>>808231
Oath. Small steps before jumping in.
>>
Dude it's all about the gear.

Where can I find like minded people?

I feel like such a loser, but I have no friends. I'm 21 and live in SoCal, if that makes a difference.

Are there clubs or anything I can get into?

There will undoubtedly be facebook/reddit groups out the ass in your area, but I'm sure you can imagine that they will mostly be filled with fags
