The official /out/ vehicle shouldn't be something only available to a handful of people.
The Mercedes G-Class is $120,000, and is rarely seen off-road.
The Toyota 4Runner handles like a boat.
The Toyota Land Cruiser J200 handles like a boat, and costs $80,000.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is only available in Australia.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is discontinued.
The Land Rover Defender is discontinued.
The Nissan Xterra is discontinued.
So unless you're rich or in Australia, the Jeep Wrangler is the only good off-roader.

I had the pleasure (if you can call it that) of driving one as a rental last week. Wasn't as terrible as I thought it'd be, i've certainly had worse rental cars (*cough* fiat 500 */cough*), but as an "out" car, no fucking way.
It's marketed towards people who think they're doing the environment a favor, but have no understanding of manufacturing processes involved in batteries and electrical components (motors, PCBAs) or economics.
Strictly looking at fuel economy, sure.
But as far as "saving the environment" goes, lolnope.jpg.
>>798540
I was rather surprised at the torque it had. Got up and going breddy gud.
The car itself was weird though. Big blind spots that aren't immediately obvious when you're in the drivers seat.
Starting it, there's no engine or transmission noises... just a chime, cute dashboard animation, and "Ready!".
Drive around for a little bit, and eventually you'll hear the engine fire up when you get up to speed.
"B" was something i've never seen on a gear selector before (for engine braking).

Trabant 601 Kübel is even easier to fix (because it has even less electrics than a beetle, and was designed in a country with not a lot of resources)
Also it is light as fuck, so one trained person can lift the backend if it gets stuck, and one civillian version has survived dakar rallye.
Is relatively small, so it has it easier to drive through woods.

My baby. Just took it 50,000 miles across the country to all lower 48 states and 23 National Parks over the last year. Busted it up a bit, but nothing insane. New drive shaft and a new radiator since mine cracked somehow. Unfortunately a bit of a pain to work on yourself depending on what you need to do. My dad's hand me down, so it has the 5.7 L V8 Hemi. Thing can move. Great for highway driving and has been pretty damn capable off-roading. Once this dies on me, I'll probably be going XJ assuming I can find one for a reasonable price out around Boise.

Don't bet on that.
Its actually a Mazda B2300 something like that but with different styling.
In the UK it was called the Ford Ranger too, but had the uglier Mazda styling.
Pic related. Can be yours for just over £2000

Its a motorcycle engine. You can replace every part in an afternoon. You don't even need to set the timing.

>The Mercedes G-Class is $120,000, and is rarely seen off-road.
You don't have to buy the newest model, and several people, including military forces, use the G-wagon off road.
>>798515
There can be only 1
>>806151
Depends... Do you like body roll? When you turn the steering wheel, do you like the front wheels to turn as well?
There is something special about old Cadillacs and stuff that just float over the biggest potholes but they can be kinda scary when you are cruising on the highway on a windy day.
>>806277
The old caddilacs are nothing like a land cruiser. They do have body roll but the springs and shocks are soft they end up with terrible handling. The car bounces and bobs around trying to make the ride smoother, and as a result you turn the wheel and the chassis responds 2 seconds later.
Toyotas and similar 4x4s are different because the chassis is stable due to stiffer springs, but the body still yaws a bit if you corner at speeds.
Its not a sports car and you shouldn't use it as one.
>>806294
I know what you mean about the 4x4's, I had an old Explorer and my mom's old Jeep was like that. Stiff leaf springs in back but still somehow float around and have no fucking steering response.
>>805517
apparently your a pretty cool dude you let other anons drive your other 4x4s.

>>804670
95-97 model? You mean the 80 series...
60 series
80 series
100 series
That's how Toyota name their wagons, nothing to do with year and to be clear, the 80 series is the best /out/ Cruiser wagon, HDJ-80R with the 1HD-FT engine to be specific, still had live axle front end but got the best mechanical pump diesel Toyota made.
>>809888
I'd like to watch a Wrangler handle pic related.
>>809942
Yeah, our country's must have different 4Runners, 4Runners are Hilux based where I live not Tacoma based and legally they couldn't pull a boat like that.
>>809944
The Tacoma based ones can't legally do that either because they are still under under B license, therefore GVW is still under 3,500KG.
That boat obviously weighs more than the truck so it cannot be towed in Europe.
But guess what. I've towed a boat like that, or maybe heavier using a Mitsubishi L200. Same size as a Hilux. Zero problems. Fuck the police.
No reason why a Wrangler can't pull that boat too.

right? ... right??
>>809944
There aren't a lot of enforcers on the roads in AK, and a Tacoma is the name used for Hilux in the US.
My boat is well heavier than the rated towing capacity, but Toyota is notoriously conservative compared with other manufacturers. No doubt a bureaucrat would be ignorant of that though.

I registered it as historical temporarily just so I could get the Vin number into the system at the DVM and it's cheaper, as for restriction I believe there is a milage cap per year on it (for parades and events) but I've never been stopped by anyone nor has the milage ever been written down by anyone. Mostly get waves and smiles from cops and fire department. Once I finish some modifications to make it 100% /out/ ready then I'll register it normally or try and register it as a camper

I didn't mean to say you need to buy new, but 3-5 years old would be better. Some states put salt on their roads during the winter months, so buying a 15+ year old SUV without rust isn't easy for most people.
Those nice classics from the 70s and 80s are almost always rotted. So it just makes more sense to go for a car that's still in production.
