Does / has anyone ever carried an airgun while out?

I've been looking at breakdown .22s, but I can carry a lot more ammo for a pellet gun.

Any good options available? I feel like there may be a niche market for it.
>>
>>752834
are you hunting squirrels?
>>
Op your pic's pistol is a crossman co2. There's a few versions of it but it's wildly popular in the modding community with a lot of manufacturers creating mods for it.

Its what I'd get if I wanted a micro hunting gun

caliber alone is meaningless. My full 12 fpe .177, shooting pic related will easily outperform the one you posted.

That said - air rifles are effective against small game - I'm talking rabbits at 30 yards - wether you use a .22 or .177.

You're looking at around 8-10 pounds of rifle though. You could carry a pcp, as they are lighter, but then you are limited to 80-100 shots (might be more than enough for an outing, but you're screwed if it isn't).

In general, I'd recommend a good .22 spring piston - geta Walther lgv/lgu, air arms tx200, or a weihrauch hw97.

Walther Terrus in .22 is as low as I'd go.

Small game for mild sustenance, during seasons.
>>752851
What about Gamo? Shot my friends, and I liked it. He's had pretty good luck with his. Any experience with those?
>>
Honestly, was is the minimum FPS to hunt squirrels and rats with?

I'm told the Baikal Izh-46m is on the low end for such.

I have a couple Gamos, never an issue with them. They have some decent mid-range stuff. I've never shot anything crazy expensive as far as air rifles but those guns are 10-15 years old and work as good as new.

>>752865
700 will take out squirrels and rats with some decent pellets. Most break-barrel guns are closer to 1000fps with lead and speaking from experience, they go in and out of pidgeons pretty easily at 20yds. Also garage doors which my parents were pissed about.
>>
>>752865
>minimum FPS
>>752874
>1000fps

FPS is a meme. IIRC, you need 8 fpe (foot pounds of energy) delivered to the cranium, to drop a rabbit. This roughly equates to a 12fpe (16.3 Joule) rifle firing a pellet at ~30 yards.

Because pellet weight varies greatly, you can get "sound barrier velocity" (1000 fps) firing 4 grain steel pellets, but higher actual energy firing heavier pellets at lower velocity.

K=1/2 mv^2
Pellets with higher mass conserve energy better downrange, which translates to greater kill range - the light pellet might have similar initial energy, but it will not have enough to kill a rabbit past 20 yards, while a heavy pellet will maintain enough energy to do the job at 35.

IIRC, the "magic number" is 673 fps, at which point the pellet's mass in grains is equal to it's energy in foot pounds.

I honestly can't say enough good things about the pellet I posted in>>752851

Check out videos on YT - it has the knockout effect of hollow points, and the ballistics of domes. IMO the best hunting pellet on the market right now. It's somewhat pricy, though. A tin of 400 is 50% more expensive than 500 JSB exacts.
>>
>>752936
Dis nigga got it down to a science. I just shoot stuff with my guns. I haven't messed with them much in years though.

And most pellets' websites will have all the info about energy and grouping n stuff on there somewhere if OP is curious. But those phillips head lookin pellets look crazy. I'm sure they get work done. I remember thinking the pointed pellets were great until I looked at some stats and saw how much better domed pellets were in a lot of cases.

Also gotta make sure you look at the FPS ratings of guns and see if it is for lead pellets or some extra light stuff. Because a gun may shoot super light pellets at 1300fps but their energy at 30yds will be garbage.
>>
There's a science behind everything.

Here's a video of them in action:
https://youtu.be/tvsQf883M-Q?t=790

you can find another one here, showing what a .177 HE does to a rabbit skull (WARNING: graphic).

Pointed pellets are great for punching through cans, wadcutters (flatheads) are used for punching holes in paper at 10m, but their accuracy dops sharply past 20 yards.

Hollow points have great expansion and energy transfer, but not as great accuracy.

Domed pellets have the best compromise of everything - greatest accuracy due to the teardrop shape, good energy transfer and expansion.

The "phillips heads" as you called them, have close to the same ballistics as domed pellets, because they don't have a huge hole in the nose, like hollowpoints do, but still expand nicely and do fun things to soft targets (as seen in the video).

So the short answer to the main question ITT is that air rifles, especially with the right pellets, are effective at hunting small game. In fact, for pest control, they are a superior choice, since you can shoot them indoors.

Another thing is accuracy with springers.

Since spring piston rifles have double recoil (due to the piston moving, and then, suddenly, not moving), you have to have good technique (delicate grip) when shooting springers.

Just got the gamo bull wispers with bear grills lethal pellets. Getting high FPS probably 1500+ as I'm definitely breaking sound barrier compared to flat points that's allot quitter when I shoot them.

Some videos to show what you can do with good air gun. I'm getting nightvision scope soon and will post videos if I get any good shots.

bare in mind a lot of mainlanders & all yanks aren't restricted to 12ft/lb. +1 for hw97 as a springer though.

benjamin is a decent (cheap) US manufacturer of air rifle OP. The Co2 you've pictured are also very popular, affordable and moddable as >>752845 said

>>754149
brah, I know it's possible, but you really shouldn't be taking pheasants with air rifles even when they're in season. seems like a great way to get beaten up by the farmer who raised them, too.
>>
>>754149
I have this gun, can't get a scope to stay zeroed in because the spring recoil fucks up the mounting system.

also the front stock screws both broke at once and I had to wrap the whole thing with duct tape

It was a great gun but since the iron sights are so fucking terrible I can't really do anything other than plink cans with it.

Meh, I have permission. Once released they are wild birds. The neighbouring land owner can cry me a river.

>>754154
I check tightness of the two front screws every 100 shots or so but I also threadlocked the shit out of them which works. The scope in the pics is a cheap £25 quid scope which has held good zero with only minor adjustments for years. You sure you using scope for air rifle?
>>
>>754154
Never use two piece mounts on a .177

Look at the mount on >>754161
>>
>>754161
yeah I also meant that they aren't legal quarry with an air rifle, but if you can take it & it's safe.. Why not I guess. Tasty.
>>
>>754161

So what's the deal with loading these things? Do you have to break and reload every 2 shots like an over/under or is there a way to load more pellets at once?
>>
>>754169
Tasty as fuck.

I take 5-10 per year. This year there are loads just chilling in the bushes. Should be fun come October! I always make sure I never dent the population though.
>>
>>754177
Nope, break and load for every shot. The old fashioned way.

If you get an expensive air rifle (pre charged not break barrel) you can use a mag and cycle with a bolt as with a normal rifle.
>>
>>754183

By pre charged you mean c02? I imagine that makes it a bit more 'high stakes' as you've pretty much got to nut them on the first shot
>>
>>754194
No he means precharged (PCP) rifles. You either charge them with a divers tank as a handpump takes forever. A lot of them are bolt action vs the single shot you typically see with break-barrel air rifles.

The issue with them (and C02 in a bigger way as temperature is also a variable) is finding the 'sweet spot' of pressure and knowing how many shots you will get at that consistency (for grouping, power etc.)

Co2 are capsules. Pre charged rifles have a built in air cylinder which is filled via pump or diving bottle.

They are very clinical, quiet and have next to no recoil. In other words, boring to me.

More of a challenge if you only have one shot and need to make it perfect every time.

Does this seem like a good idea to you guys?

It's a light-weight .22lr rifle. Weight without the scope comes to 2lb 9oz (about 1150 g), the fixed 4x scope is an additional 8.5 oz if you feel you need it. I really like the idea of creating a light weight pack rifle. .22wmr would be better than .22lr in my opinion, but I haven't ever hunted so I don't know. .22lr would be fine for squirrels and rabbits.

Here's the page documenting the build:
http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2014/06/ultralight-backpacking-rifle-savage.html

The builder suggests that you could probably make it a pound lighter if you added a carbon fiber barrel.

I've been looking at the Walther Terrus. It seems like a preddy gud deal, and has everything that I'm looking for besides a sling swivel for carrying. Might have to figure that out later.

Anyone have experience / know anything about the Walther Terrus though? I've read that all of the parts are made in Germany, which is a plus to me.

If you can carry/obtain/use a firearm without restrictions a 22lr would make way more sense than an airrifle. Much lighter, much cheaper (for the rifle, at least) and less moving parts or things to break.

PS. They make even smaller rimfire rifles than 22lr -- I know somebody with an FAC (firearms certificate) who uses a .177 supersonic for taking small quarry. Works a charm. Obvs .22lr is the standard tho, so if you're looking for something cheap/light/reliable for taking small quarry get a ruger 10/22 and some supersonic (not strictly necessary but yolo) ammo. Make sure you've got adequate backstop tho; 22lr is lethal and travels to quite the distance.

Ah it's fine. I could just rub off that paint, the only issue is that the 2 stock screws cost £30 and I'd have to buy a really high end large calibre rifle tier scope mounting system for like a hundred £ because recoil is so bullshit high & I can't find a mount stop block that fits this thing and I just don't care enough for it to do that right now.
