Pretty much anywhere in South Florida, you are only a short drive away from the Everglades. I don't think it's exactly prime campung area but at least there is a big patch of nature nearby. Plus the whole ocean.

You would think with the appalachian trail going through my state there would be more places to camp, but after digging around it looks like they're all in bumfuck west virginia

Virginiafag here, Merrimac Farm is fairly close to DC. I've never been there but it could be nice. Try looking into other WMA's, state forests, or even scouring GIS data for land that is open to public but not explicitly labeled as being available for camping.

Dude there's a ton of natl forest in WV, and some more in Kentucky too

I've never run across any rangers at my local WMA but that's probably because it is fairly rural and not prone to much traffic.

I haven't lived more than an hour away from a NF/NP in like twelve years.

I used to live an hour away from Snoqualmie NF and the Alpine Lakes District. I just spent the winter in Alta, UT which is actually inside the Wasatch NF and right next to Uintas NF. And this summer I'll be living Talkeetna, AK just outside Denali NP and a few hours drive from the Chugach NF.

I live in a National Forest, less than an hour away from another national forest, and about an hour from the Grand Canyon

Kentuckyfag here, we have some of the best scenery in the nation in my opinion. The Gorge has some hella rock climbing, Western Kentucky has some great spelunking (there's more more than just the Mammoth Cave basic tour), and we have the moonbow at Cumberland Falls.

If you think that's dumb, in VA you have to have a special license in addition to any other licenses in order to do ANYTHING on a state forest. Certain forests allow simply walking without permit but many still require one.
