well seriously now. If you have to ask what to expect I have to ask if you're really qualified. Maybe you'll get it. Also you posted a federal ranger which triggered me.

repost thread if you actually get the job or go to the /out/ job thread for career building tips and gaysexinnnawoods

If you used usajobs you don't get a notice if you were not selected. Only if you made the possible list. Then you don't get a notice if you don't get the job.

I know what a park ranger does, I was more asking about the job experience, how often you deal with parkgoers, if it's an enjoyable job, who are your bosses and stuff like that

I used governmentjobs.com, I got an application confirmation email, and the status on the website is "application recieved"

This. "Park Ranger" can describe like 1000 different jobs. Nowadays it basically means "Full-time employee of the National Park Service."
>>
>>747946
Fuck these negative faggots. I hope you get the job OP.
>>
>>747946
Rumour has it, there's, Lots of paperwork involved everyday. dealing with degenerate faggots who insist on breaking the rules, responding to calls of public disturbances in campgrounds after dark hours, more paperwork.
also basically being the park policeman which sometimes they can be dicks, always hassling people for no reason.
>"Excuse me sir, are you aware its against the rules to do "X"?
>"Excuse me ma'am, I noticed you were taking pictures of the flowers. Are you aware it's against the rules to pick flowers or otherwise disturb the natural fauna?"
>"what do you think you're doing in 'my park' wearing that surplus military jacket!? Can You please show me some ID and proof of US citizenship, because you look like a terrorist"
>"Are you carrying any weapons?" "Are you aware it's unlawful to carry a weapon in in the park?"
>"Why do you have that knife on your belt?"
>[ranger Draws pistol] "ON THE GROUND!" "ON THE GROUND NOW!"
>Six other ranger patrol vehicles and a dozen homeland security SUVs speed to the scene.
>All because you have a six inch knife sheathed to your belt for whittlin and general camping woods use.

a lot of places "Park Rangers" are nazi dickheads these days, they act like they're part of the border patrol homeland security terrorist watchdogs or something
>>
Unless you are a minority, expect nojob.

You, however, are far to cool to have rules apply to you.
>>
>>747971
USAjobs will sometimes tell you if you were rejected or not. Depends on the hiring official and the HR monkeys if they submit the right paperwork or not.

I just got a rejection letter from a job I applied to 6 months ago.

I'm sure it happens sometimes, and I've seen it personally, even as a parks employee. Pic related, some detail LE saw this leaning against a tree and thought it was a bomb then tried to get a coworker to cross a busy street to come talk to her about it almost getting him run over.

We slapped the label on afterwards and it became a running joke.

But I'm not going to sit here and say that all rangers are dicks based off of one bad experience. Generally if you're not being a d-bag there's no reason for a ranger to even bother you.

People who take positions of power (especially MP/policing/EMS/nurse type jobs), who are hired without extensive psychological evaluation are normally power-hungry psychopaths.

There are exceptions, but those people normally quite for a different line of work.

>all of us who are fishing are 12yo to 13yo.
>3 speed boats with 4 game wardens each speed into the area and criss-cross the water in front of us, sending 1 foot high waves all over the place
>they pull firearms on us and use a bullhorn loudspeaker to tell us to drop the poles and lay on the ground or we'll be shot
>about half the game wardens come off the boats, wade through the water, and cuff us
>parents are freaking the fuck out
>the next 45 minutes are spent trying to see if we really are 12-13yo and who has or doesn't have fishing licenses while our parents are hopping mad and yelling

All of us didn't have a licenses which was perfectly legal since our parents all had fishing licenses. Oh did I mention they confiscated out poles and tackle boxes too? We never got those back (which had all the antique wooden lures my grandfather left me with).

They didn't charge anyone and didn't had out warnings or tickets of any kind. They just came over, fucked with us, took our shit, and left. We spent the rest of the day in the cars while our parents drove from game station to police station filling out paper work (I think) and giving everyone a piece of their minds. To the best of my knowledge, nothing was officially done about it.

First off, friendly reminder for the thread that most "park rangers" are not LEO's. Second, a lot of LE get that way in parks because tons of visitors think they can do whatever they want in a national park or forest. Imagine if normal people in your town and city had the attitude of "getting away" to kick it back and do whatever, law enforcement would probably react a lot differently. Anyway, it's more of an explanation than an excuse, as well as a generalization. I know lots of NPS LEOs who are great, laid back Rangers.

If OP is going to be a state park ranger, most generic ranger positions involve doing minor trail work, opening/closing gates, patrolling and permit inspection. If they really don't have funding for maintenance people, you'll be doing that stuff too.
>>
What if you say you're part Native American?

>>748525
A lot of people are part Cherokee in the eastern USA. I'm not sure what it is like in the west. But, I doubt that would be something that would actually matter unless you are a card carrying member of a nation/first people. For the people in the east who are part Cherokee that doesn't matter since the "official" card carrying requirements starts after the trail of tears.

Did you apply to be a NPS ranger or work for the state?

I was a NPS ranger who did Interp for 3 years, so I can attest that the ONLY way you will get a job with them is to LIE and LIE HARD on your resumes and USAjobs application. HR departments are staffed by morons who get hundreds of resumes for 3 positions, you need to excel in that standardized test of a application even to get reviewed. You also need to apply to EVERY JOB that is available, no matter where you are. You need to be willing to move for this job.

And remember, military service trumps education and experience every time. I've seen positions go to diesel mechanics before they go to environmental scientists.

Good luck son, you'll need it.

Also, for the record, the most infuriating question you will receive will be "What can I do in 2 days here, we're in a rush to get to ______". Fuck you, you're surrounded by bountiful nature and you want to cram it into 2 days and check off all the shit on your list. You learn and experience nothing of value and I hate you.
>>
>>748576
>And remember, military service trumps education and experience every time. I've seen positions go to diesel mechanics before they go to environmental scientists.

Fuck this drives me up the wall. I, and many others, have been denied countless positions we were perfect for because they had to go with the military faggot who knows jack shit about ecology.

I remember we hosted a fire effects crew one time and their technician was a veteran who only got the job because of her status. Took one freshman biology class and she was out there trying to indentify plants. There are tons of plant nerds out there who would of killed for that position and would of really benefited from getting it, but nope, gotta hire the veteran. All she saw was "fire" and jumped on it.

You can't really say anything, because then it's like "Oh you don't support our veterans!" It's rather an open secret that a lot of people in the service really despise the system in place.

Can you tell I'm a little bitter?
>>
>>748587
Most of these federal service jobs were created for veterans anyway. Military does not always trump education. It depends on the position and how it is announced. Most ranger position require a co op program to enter. I've seen many vets not qualify because of that reason. There are plenty of non veteran preference jobs out there. Just look harder.
>>
>>748587

In my experience I've met some very passionate and dedicated vets who we're excellent candidates for the jobs. One moved from the Coast Guard to work interp with me in northern michigan. Great guy, very out going, very motivated, and had a real love of the water and coast, which was exactly where we were located. 10/10 would again.

Then I worked at a resource where the guy spent 4 years in the 80's in the army. Back then you sat around, drank beer, and waited for the Ruskies to make a move, which thankfully they never did. Hes not a combat vet, hes not a hero, hes just a dude who jumped on the army during one of the largest military buildups in the history of this country. He's out there going through the motions, not good with families, children, or the environmental resources. He should never have been hired, and given that all things were equal, would not have.

I've seen plenty of chAir Force vets come through, or retired old folks who were in the army back in 19whatever and get jobs that take away positions that are entry level which should go to people who are starting careers and need that experience. Instead they go to people who are using the positions are mini vacations and retirements.

There are a lot of gripes with the system, and personally I am fine with giving vets hiring preference, but when you see it in action and listen to the other young people out there going to school to get an education in this field and they are denied a position its nothing short of frustrating.

>>748596
but this guy is also right in that you DO need to look harder, you need to apply to every position and be willing to work in the most boring out of the way local. Once you're in, you're in. Experience in the NPS is vital to moving around. No one gets Grand Canyon, or Teton, or Yellowstone, or Shenandoah on their first try. Plenty of people whet their teeth on Death Valley, or Herbert hoovers Birthplace, or god knows what.
>>
>>748611

cont.

Apply to places that have a high turnover rate. Things in NYC, Philly, Boston, San Fran, Washington DC. Its high volume and very stressful but its a way to get into the system. From there you need to network with other resources and apply directly through their department heads. Seriously, go to conferences, visit parks, talk to people and make yourself known. Then you can move out to whatever western or northern park you'd like.

Also, figure out what type of park work you are looking for. You want Interp (my field), then you'll be leading hikes and talking to parents and old people all the time. You want Nat Resources? Clearing trails, cutting trees, etc. You can do wildlife stuff, that's a branch. You can also do maintenance which is exactly as it sounds, fixing broken shit, cleaning latrines, building stuff for the parks. You can also go to school to be a LEO (law enforcement officer), now they are trained as homeland security so you need schooling and basically you're a cop. That can be as wild as you want. Some parks need them as safety officers rescuing lost, injured, or in most cases STUPID visitors. Some parks, like Lake Mead, use them to stop drug runners from using the parks as a highway for cartel bullshit. Some parks use them more for game wardens, poaching, illegal activity, vandalism, etc. Depends on the resource.
>>
>>748611

And remember, the NPS is only one branch of the government that works outdoors. You can apply to the Forest Service, which had lots of land to play with. National Forests are under the Dept of Agriculture. They are viewed as resources to use and manage, not just for preservation. Mostly its labor, thinning forests, burning stuff, but there are interp resources there as well. Its a great way to get into the system.

USGS also does a lot of stuff, as does the Bureau of Land Management. BLM lands are massive and its mostly used for hunting and wildlife sanctuaries. Very /out/.

And don't forget state parks, there are lots of those out west that can compete with National Parks lands in terms of wilderness and beauty. National Parks are determined by their relationship with the country as a whole, they are chosen by Congress as having beauty or value so great that the nation as a whole should regard them as special. State parks can be breathtaking and massive yet are juuuuust shy of that qualification. Adirondack State Park in NY or Custer State Park in South Dakota are two prime examples of amazing lands that aren't national, but holdup well to many National Parks. Don't count them out. You learn a lot at that level and its a great resume builder for NPS work. Many Chief I met got their start working, then managing state parks before making the jump to the federal level. Some even move back down to state parks because it gives them more freedom and less bureaucracy then fed parks. Do you know how hard it is to get anything done on the federal level? Its the government, so it moves slowly, if at all.
>>
>>748611
I mean, I'm in the system but I still get denied quite a bit (my current job I applied to around 100 jobs at least). I applied for a winter interp job at the park I had worked at for the summer and the head interp ranger liked me, but she had to hire a vet over me because it's the law. Even though I knew the park inside and out, knew everyone who worked there, and was well liked. So it really gets my goat when I get denied because of some arbitrary reason. I'm not saying that they can't do a good job, it's just that it's extremely frustrating when someone who is well qualified gets edged out. Same story with another guy who applied for a winter tech position at the same place doing pine beetle work. He was a hard worker and everyone loved him, but he got edged out by a veteran.
>>
>>748629

con. some more

Lastly, I'll give you my final advice on this. Apply to every park, everywhere. Go where ever. Move around. See the country. Live in every part you can. We have an amazing land full of passionate people who love the outdoors in all its facets and work very very hard to protect it and educate the people on its importance. Historical and natural resources form the American identity, and for many people our parks are things that they have never experienced. Its great to see the Europeans who come to them. They barely have stuff like that back at home. Brits, you know what I mean!

But be prepared to move constantly, every 6 months is a new job. You'll get seasonal jobs and disappear when the leaves do. You'll be a ghost and never get to put down roots. There is also a chance you'll get stuck in seasonal limbo where you never land a perm position. Where you'll always be coming or going, but never get the chance to actually settle down. If you're ok with that then go for it, but be aware. I've seen people doing seasonal work for YEARS and never get a real position. They go back to tending bar, or working some bullshit job all winter just for the chance to put another year of leading tours or cutting trees under their belt and apply to more jobs to maybe land that coveted perm slot. Me personally? I couldn't do it, I got burnt out and didn't want to move all my things and drive 3 days to another state (I'm from CT, and most NPS jobs obviously are west). I didn't want to do it anymore. This also all hit at the same time the government shut down, funding was scarce as it was but with that nail in the coffin jobs really dried up. I was offered a position returning to my old park but it was from Memorial Day to Labor day. 3 months! I just couldn't do it! Leave my apartment, move my things to my parents again, drive out there, work for 3 months, save a little bit, move back and not find an apartment? Nope!

Most of what this anon is saying is spot on. Although I've personally worked at exclusively "crown jewel" parks, I've gotten extremely lucky. I also have latino diversity bucks which I'm not exactly trying to spend but that's the system.

Funny story, my first season with NPS, I went out with the aquatics crew for a day. Not knowing any better I'm chatting with them and it comes out that the crew lead is fresh out of the chair force without a lick of experience and the guy on his crew (probably a GS-05 AT BEST) has a masters in aquaculture. Of course the whole conversation got really tense which I only realized later was because the crew lead got vets pref.

>>748639
I'm on my fourth season. I've yet to feel burnt out yet so I'm sorry you feel that way, but at least you know its not for everybody, or at least just not long term. You're right though that its a lifestyle that you need to adjust to. It can be so satisfying and the people you meet are top notch. Its just not for everyone and I don't think that's a bad thing. Some people I know love bouncing around, and some go back to a little national monument in South Dakota or Missouri year after year.

Hey, I'm that anon from the 4 endless ranting posts. Which National Monument? I spent two seasons at Jewel Cave and they were fantastic. Amazing resource, great crew, and they Chief of Interp there was nothing short of inspirational. I will always, until I die, have nothing short of honor and love for the Black Hills and Jewel Cave. I wish some day t have kids and take them out west to that special location.

And yeah, I got burnt out, but thats also not me. I need a city, I'm a east coast boy. I love the outdoors, I love the wilderness, but god damn I need the wild intensity of people crammed into a tight location. I just can't deal with so many white folk spread out across the prairie.

But all this talk just makes me miss it more. Good on you anon, keep with it! Being a flathat was an honor and a privilege that most people when they learn about my history with it, do not and can not understand. I still have all my uniform, hat, Eisenhower jacket, I even kept my badge. Some day that will go to my grand children and they will wear it to some shitty college party and I sincerely hope it gets them laid.

Veteran's hiring preference needs an overhaul. I mean that's just an objective fact. It was never meant for vets from the 80's to retire from their private sector jobs and then take on an entry-level position for fun. It also wasn't meant for vets to take positions from people who are more qualified than they are. It was supposed to be that if a vet and a candidate have the same qualifications, the vet gets the hiring preference. Instead it's interpreted as "ONLY HIRE VETS" so you get a lot of people who don't actually know what the fuck they are doing.
>>
>>749198
Yeah, standing registers don't have time frames. It's saying that there is technically an open position, but it is not utilized currently.
>>
>>749196
Oh damn! I have some friends who worked at JECA and WICA. One was there last summer as interp, they've both moved on but still talk about how much they want to go back. It seems crazy to me since I've worked at huge parks but I think they'll both end up back there someday. I'm an east coaster too, but a suburbanite, so I guess for me the tedium of life here makes everything else so exciting. And yea, ofc I hope you could find your way back into it, imo if you spend your off season somewhere cool it makes it a lot better. But it's hard to survive in a US city on your own with no work. Hence going to South America for a few months/bumming it. It's something you gotta love
>>
>>748288
you clearly have a very limited life experience otherwise you would know full well what i was talking about and would not be happy about it either.

People who visit National Parks are pretty much idiots. They need a pre-packaged "outdoor" experience with paved trails and signs interpreting everything everywhere. The last time I went to Yosemite National Park, maybe 30+ years ago, there was a lady asking another one, quite seriously, if they turn off Yosemite Falls at night so people can sleep. I kid you not. Ever since I moved to Idaho, I avoid National Parks, except the one time I visited Yellowstone, took the kids when they were little. Been there, done that. Never again. Pic related.
tl;dr, If you want to deal with the lowest common denominator of humanity visiting the "outdoors," become a National Park ranger.

On the plus side you learn to think on your feet and not much phases you afterwards.

Get summer jobs and internships. When you get out of college look on USA jobs for entry-level technician positions. Where do you live? You might have to travel to get a job.

Cont. - When you're in school, if there's a student chapter of like the Society of American Foresters, get involved. Pick up any skills you have the opportunity to learn. Chainsaw, defensive driving training (usually just a computer program but still good), etc. If there's volunteer opportunities, take them. Learn how to build trail or plant trees. Anything you can do to stack your resume is useful.

Do research when you're and undergrad. Buddy up to a prof and tell them you want to do a project. Also, internships. Also, you can get hired for federal and state forestry jobs for the summer as an undergrad sometimes which helps. Really anything you can do to show you're serious and to stand out.

Right now they're hiring foresters with just bachelor's degrees for full time positions all over the place. My buddy just got one in Oklahoma.

Research thing only really helps if you want to go straight into a Master's degree. You're right about people hiring foresters though. My uncle, a career forester, has been telling me that there literally aren't enough Forestry graduates being produced.

Another thing is, after college, you can also spend time with the Student Conservation Corps or take on an AmeriCorps position at a National Forest. Also, look into the Pathways program, which is basically Easy Mode for getting into the federal government.

Part of the reason I got a job straight out of college with a bachelor's because I did two undergrad projects. You probably won't get a pathways unless you do some serious work in undergrad, i.e. research. Shows you know how to work hard, that you can plan and be self reliant, and that you're smart enough to apply what you have learned.

15 years ago I was offered a state park ranger job in a western state of the USA. At the interview, almost every question that they asked me was about handling confrontations with disorderly drunks.

It's been a dream of mine to be a seasonal ranger on the Boston Harbor islands, but I have pretty much no relevant education/training. Should I just join the Coast Guard and see how that shakes out in a few years? I know I want to do this but don't know how.

Yeah, you're too dumb for this job, anon. You don't stand a chance.

It taught me how to be assertive, how to listen to people despite hating their guts, and most importantly, taught me how to fill out ass tons of paperwork in triplicate in the most efficient manner possible.
