How long can meat wait between killing and eating, unrefrigerated? I want to make a painting of a dead rabbit and my spouse agreed to shoot one for me. It might take all day to paint. But I hate to waste it as meat, and would feel better if I could paint it then eat it. How many hours can it sit out to be looked at without going bad? Thank you /out/.

Depends on the temperature. You can hang the meat for a week on birds and rabbits and hares in a coldish cellar and it's still edible.
>>
Forgot to say, it will be 75 degrees today. Tomorrow will be 50. I want to get to work but it could wait til tomorrow if it makes any difference.

What angle are you painting it from? If the belly isn't visible you could gut the rabbit and preserve the meat longer. 50 farenheit will probably be fine.
>>
>>730757
I really want to see your painting when you're done with it :^)

Thank you so much for your replies.
I wanted the belly visible like this pose, but, I would change if it meant it wasn't killed and wasted for my folly.
So, it's 50 degrees, if we shoot it in the morning, gut the rabbit, I paint until dark (12 hours?), we could eat it for dinner?

Cool, I will happily share it when finished. Have some fish :)

Pretty sure it'll be fine as long as no bugs get to it.

What a relief to hear! Thank you.
>>
Can someone clarify the gutting thing for me? Someone once told me if you don't gut a rabbit within a few hours of its death, it's wasted. Is that bullshit?
>>
>>730843
No. You can hang rabbits and pheasants, that's where you hang them up in a cellar or coldish room and the meat gets softer and tastier the more you hang them, they're not refrigerated at all.. Some people hang them until the fur comes off when you touch them. You don't have to gut game birds but you do have to gut deer and rabbits.

You can still eat the rabbit even if it's had it's intenstines in for a while and you'd probably be fine. If the meat smells good after you've washed it then it's fine to eat.

Thanks for explaining more about the hanging. Sounds like even keeping it overnight (~24 hours before eating) should be all right.

I watched for rabbits this morning and saw none. Usually we see them in the afternoon/evening.

The radio says it will be in the 30s tonight -- so I am thinking instead of hoping to get it tomorrow AM, we can kill it tonight, I can do some drawing as well. Then paint tomorrow all day and eat the rabbit tomorrow night.

Been years since I had it but rabbit legs baked with mustard... mmm...

As others have said
Decomposition is temperature dependent, and it will start in abdomen because of the acids present.
Blow flys, the ones that lay eggs that turn into maggots are not active at temperatures below 55 degrees F.
Gut the animal, keep it cool.
>>
Take a picture, it will last longer
>>
Depends on shot location. If the intestines are ruptured then gut it out clean it asap if you want to eat it.
>>
I hunt for most of my food. I sometimes carry around a sack of squirrels all day before I gut and clean them if I'm lazy. But usually once I kill something, I pull the skin off and gut it. Guts can decompose pretty quickly especially on a hot day, and I don't like contaminating my meat.

OP, everyone covered the bases already so I'll just say that you should definitely post your painting when you're done.

I'm a big fan of Landseer and Landseer esq paintings. Pic related

Thank you all for your advice.

I was so excited! We sat out from late afternoon until dark, and also tried walking around the thicket, but, we didn't see a single rabbit. I suppose they are harder to find when you are looking for them. Hopefully today we will have success (perhaps I should also have asked advice on actually getting the rabbit- any suggestions are welcomed).

>>730854
A photo might last longer without change than the carcas, but in this case I prefer to make a painting of a rabbit, rather than a painting of a photograph of a rabbit. To me this is a clear distiction.

>>731121
Thanks for the picture! I wasn't familiar with his work. There's another Englishman, George Stubbs, who has done some fantastic hunting scenes, do you like his paintings?

gutting them this way is a sure fire way of catching some sort of disease..

>crushed liver
>crushed spinal cord
>crushed intestine and stomach

its all fun and games until you catch dat prion. remember, humans can catch em all. ;)

I continue working on the painting, heading over now for the third day. Rabbit's eye sunk but doesn't smell. It got mid-sixties yesterday but my north-facing room is cold.
Pic is a drawing from Wednesday.

Altough feasable, this should only be done un extreme situations. You are boiund to contaminante the meat using that method
>>
>>734387
Do elaborate please, what is prion etc. And how cooked meat can still be dangerous.
>>
>>734810
Not him but not every toxin is exterminated with heat. Was going to make a disgracefull nip joke but I'll refrain.

A prion is a type of protein found in the nervous systems of most mammals. They are protease resistant proteins which means they are difficult for the body to break down. This is unfortunate because when a prion becomes misshaped, it will fuck up other prions it comes in contact with in a chain reaction. Prion-related disease include scrapie and mad cow disease and they are incurable and barely treatable.

We decided to plant the rabbit under a cypress tree. It was longer and hotter than expected, and starting to go bad. A spider tried to lay eggs in its nose.
