Yeah I could probably get it sent to work and use a different card if I wanted. Even at the full price, it seems worth it. I guess. Depends on the box too. The standard MTB for March didn't have a regular crank, just that Plopper. Then a chatter bait, a couple soft baits, and those hooks. But the February Pro box had a couple shallow-medium divers. It's all cool stuff but main reason I dobnt want to stay on it is because of the 10% of the stuff they send that I will never use. With that pro box, the flukes they sent me are huge. They are probably better suited for musky fishing or if you have a lake with nothing but 5lb+ bass. Also that goody Booyah rig with the blades. I tried casting that and it is definitely more of a trolling rig.

I'm always down with more tackle, even if I may only use it once a year. But my tackle bag is already overflowing and I don't need more stuff that isn't really worth opening. I would rather just go buy another X-Rap and Mepps in another color.

I need to take an updated pic of my bag and all the soft plastics and cranks and shit I have now. Plus I have another 5 lures coming from Cabela's right now and that MTB Pro in a few weeks.

Are you trying to eat them or use em as bait? If you can find a trap for cheap, even a used one, why not? Only thing is if you are trying to eat, idk what you will do with 3 crayfish at the end of the day.

Going to be spooling up 2 reels today, okuma sentry 35 ( rated for 200 yards of 10 lb , 170 of 12lb)

And an okuma centrific 20
(190 4, 110 6, 90 8l

What should I spool up with,
Have 50 lb power pro(100-150 yards)
20 lb stren braid (100 yards maybe)
20 lb mono (maybe 150-200 yards?)
15 lb mono ( alot )
12 lb mono (150-200 yards )
8 lb mono (alot)
15 lb flouro (mostly used for leaders )
15 lb flouro coated bullshit that sucks ass,
12 lb copolymer bullshit that sucks ass
3 lb ice fishing line
2 lb ice fishing line
What use? Maybe 12 lb mono on the 35?
I don't think I have enough 20 lb braid to fill it

>>728414
Thread #23, aka that Jordan 23 Jump Man thread

>>728415
You just sink em on the bottom by some rocks or what? That looks really simple.

>>728418
You could always put ~50yds of mono as a backing and then the 100yds of #20 braid.

How is that Stren braid btw? I saw it at Dick's and it was really cheap but Stren always seemed to make ok mono.
>>
>>728420
im more of a Drew Brees, PeyPey manning kind of guy.
>>
>>728420
Yeah sink it to the bottom , tight nlw I have 9 oz of weight on it (too much) but I don't have any smaller weights

And I've had mixed experiences with the stren braid, on my spinning reel it's fucking great, casts like a dream, nice and thin, I like the white color,
Never had any issues , have had the bail slam shut and it didn't break, I tried it on my cheap memecaster and had 4 snaps in one day ( though I really do think that there's some sharp think on the memecaster that was weakining it, I got mine on sale for dirt cheap so I'd give it a shot
Im very happy with it and think the issues with memecaster was an error on the rod/reels part not the line

And I actually don't even think k I have 100 yards it's probably a bit less
>>
>>728424
If you're just doing freshwater like lakes and stuff, you could still get away with 80-90yds and a mono backing. 20lb braid is just so much easier to deal with than 12lb mono.
>>
>>728428
Yeah I know, I also may use it a bit in saltwater, but also if I use 20 lb on my 35 what will I use on the 20
>>
>>728431
I would probably wait for something smaller on the 20. Either 4-6lb mono or 10-15lb braid. 10lb sounds like a good choice on that.
>>
>>728434
I don't have the money to buy another spool of line right now, maybe il run 8 lb mono on it for now
Going with 20 lb backing and 50 lb braid on the 35
>>
>>728436
What are you trying to use that reel for? That's gonna be real heavy. Would be a shame to spool it up and have to rip it off again when you get some more 20lb or 30lb braid.
>>
>>728441
Bass, pickerel, catfish, il probably end up using a leader of 8 lb mono anyways , but I also want to be able to use it for carp, stripers, and bluefish
Plus even if I rip it off il reuse it on something else,

It's easy. I have the best luck at dusk. Toss near weed beds and cover. They will eat anything, especially early morning and later in the afternoon when they are feeding.

If you can see them jumping near the top, throw a popper on and have fun.
>>
>>728556
For LMB on artificials, NOTHING tops soft plastics. Deep in my heart I'd love for it not to be true, but it is. Look up Texas, Carolina, and Wacky rigs, as well as how to rig a fluke. All that shit will put bass into your hands. If you master nothing else, master soft plastic fishing and you need fear no bass. The best colors for me have been June bug, watermelon red and silver shad for fluke baits.
For other artificials, the classic Rapala floater is deadly, as are lipless crankbaits like the Rat-L-Trap, topwater poppers like the Rebel Pop-R or Hula Popper and plain white spinnerbaits.
With just those few baits, you'll be able to catch bass most any time of the year.

>>
>>728599
Examining the stomachs of trout will give you your answer-nymphs, nymphs and more nymphs. Trout eat fly nymphs all the fucking time. That's why the fly fishermen are killing it and you're not.
Fish with lures that imitate nymphs and you'll get trout.

If you are looking at Ugly Stik price ranges, I have finally been trying some different options and have not been disappointed. I own 3 Ugly Stiks and recently have wanted something a little different. Ugly Stiks are durable and all, but the action doesn't seem the best.

I had that exact reel on the Cardinal SX rod until I broke it the other day. It was a nice rod for quite a few years. Grabbed that Fenwick Eagle for $60 and I'm definitely not disappointed in it. I was also looking at a Shimano Sellus for around $50 and those were nice, the grips and reel seat design were awesome and they had a bunch to choose from but the action was nice on all of them. That Berkley Lightning Rod Shock I bought maybe 6 months ago has been really sturdy as well. The Lightning Rods run around $40 for the regular one or $50 for the Shock, but Walmart sells the Shock for $40 so if I buy another, I will make Bass Pro match their price.

Aside from those, you can always get a decent store brand rod for a good price. Bass Pro Graphite Series run $40 all day and they always have a nice selection so you can find whatever size and action you want. Otherwise Bass Pro Bionic Blade rods have been on clearance for the past couple months since they redesigned them and you may still be able to grab one for around $50 when they normally run $80. I know Gander Mountain has had lots of sales on their store brand rods as well.

Same shit when I had my waverunners. I told myself I would never buy another boat unless I lived on the water and the thing was docked in my backyard.

Plus I lived in Chicago at the time so I took them out like 3 times a summer. Dude who maintained and stored them through the winter actually jumped at the offer to buy them since I put like no hours on them.

>>728618
Where is it? You shoulda done it. Take pics nigga.

>>728600
>>728602
That's where I would break out a chartruese spinner with some big silver or gold blades. If the bass are jumping near the top, something loud up there would probably work. Alternatively, jet black baits are good in water like that since the black stands out really well in the murky water.

I think today is the first day I didn't have fun fishing. Hooked 5 fish, and lost them all. Broke/bent 4 hooks. A group of kids maybe 13-15 years old came after I'd been there for awhile and were being noisy and shit. I went to change my lure and after I tied it on one of the kids was standing literally right where I was tossing my lure. Then another kid was fishing sorta close to me, and he ended up throwing a rapala into my back, putting a hole in my jacket. He seemed genuinely sorry, so I didn't get mad or anything. I think they're alright kids, I'm glad they're fishing n stuff, but they had no etiquette.

/blogpost over

Anyway. Can anyone help me not lose fish on swimbaits? I tried setting the hook and just letting the fish run with it, but I lost all of them.
>>
>>728652
Man it sucks that I missed out. I was gonna go out and get it but I'm traveling and I don't have room in my car to fit it comfortably with everyone else. People would be pissed off if they have to drive 10 hours with that poking in their back. Damn it.
>>
>>728660
I feel ya on the swimbait deal. Best bet I've had is trying to let them eat it a little first and then setting it. But that only works if you feel a nibble first. Otherwise if they bite while you're swimming it, you just gotta hope you hooked them well.

And I despise fishing where there are other people. If those kids came up on me, I would've hucked a lure on some 30lb braid at them and "accidentally" cut their line a few times until they left.
>>
>>728662
Fuck them. I would've bought it in a second. Strap it to the roof or whatever. What kind of rod was it on?
>>
>>728599
>Im not all that into fly fishing, so any advice would help

Fish for something other than trout or wait until the hatch ends. When one source of food is much more abundant than others, such as during a hatch, trout of all sizes feed on it to the point of exclusion so unless you have a lure shaped and sized like whatever they're currently sipping of the water you're shit out of luck.

Since I'm going up north then returning back south tomorrow, I think I'll detour back to this store and cross my fingers that it's still there. They were clearing combos by the dozen for ridiculous prices, top-quality stuff 70% off and shit. They can take being poked in the back for deals thi good for 3 hours home.
>>
>>728672
Yeah man you should do it. Grab more than one if there is anything else sweet. Abu Garcia rods, even the cheaper ones, normally aren't bad at all.

I need to find a place like that, I'll go buy 4 or 5 nice combos and sell 3 of them to Skid and somehow lose money on it.
>>
>>728599
Get one of those clear bobbers and the right fly to imitate the hatch. I think it's called a casting bobber.
>>
>>728667

I hate fishing with other people too. There's only a couple people who i see regularly where I fish that I don't mind. There's two guys who bow fish so I don't have to worry about where I cast. Then there's another guy that's super nice and we kinda get in a grove where we'll cast where the other person isn't. But other than that it always kind of bums me out when other people come over to where I'm fishing.
>>
>>728682
it's a strike indicator. you use them for nymphing.

not for drys or streamers
>>
So apparently there is a lake near me that is stocked with trout, but I can't find a website that would say what is usually hatching this time of year. Anyone know what would be good to imitate this time of year in northeast ohio? Mayfly nymphs? Stonefly nymphs?

These things that are about an inch and a half maybe two inches long?
>>
>>728685
And aren't nymphs what will be around to eat now anyways?
>>
>>728689
nymphs are around all the time. nymphing also isn't just limited to imitating nymphs, but also eggs, worms, emerging hatching insects [emergers] among other things. Basically nymphing is a style, but you need moving water to do it effectively. In still-water you want to mostly rely on streamers, and skating dry flies when the fish are feeding on the surface.

>>728688
I personally use an Airlock Indicator
https://vimeo.com/100230468

otherwise I Czech nymph, relying on a colored leader for my strike indication.
>>
>>728692
that being said, you can nymph in still-water, it's just extremely unforgiving and you need a lot of patience. Orvis has a nice write-up on the technique

I wouldn't advise this to anyone that doesn't have a good experience fly fishing, but if you have the patience it's an extremely satisfying way to fish, and extremely effective for perch.

Any of you use box traps? I know those who crab often do. but im talking freshwater stuff?

I'm actually looking at different ways to catch fish.. currently building a trap to catch pan-fish and minnows and shiners all at the same time hopefully. but trying to not catch nasty ass catfish. fuck catfish. the god damn fresh water equivalent to tilapia. I'd rather eat an asshole.

working on building my trap from stuff I got laying around. so far so good. I just gotta find a way to funnel them inside and hold them there. Idk what would be better. A cone shape. or flat V shape. I see lots of traps that have cone shapes, and if it isn't broke don't fix it. but ive also seen some V shapes.. I'm thinking the V shape has a taller slot, allowing for larger panfish to squeeze in. but might cause the fish to escape. then there's a double V shape, where its two V's stacked behind one an another.

What would be a good technique for a noob like me?
I've got a 5/6 wt with sink-tip line and an 8 wt with floating line (The 5/6 wt it a pretty crap combo desu, but I've gotten fish with it, the 8wt rod is pretty good, but the reel is pretty arse)
Oh and lastly what am I doing wrong that keeps causing me wind knots in my leader/tippet

I doing wrong that keeps causing me wind knots in my leader/tippet

I had the same issue turns out it was because I wasn't keeping my elbow at my ribs.

I would put 6wt float line on the 5/6 and put 8wt sink on the 8wt, fish streamers with the 8wt and nymphs, dries, smaller streamers on the 5/6

The 8wt is nice for casting large streamers for big fishes.

I'm by no means an expert but that's personally what I would do.

A boat between 10 and 18 feet, usually made of aluminum, that has a flat bottom and squared off front
If you look at it from the top it would be a rectangle
It has a profile kind of like this
\______|
Its got a shallow draft is easy to make and Is very versatile used as row boats or having outboards mounted to them, usually used either for duck hunting or fishing.

Launching your boat is legit half the fun. especially for those who are watching..

>F250 at boat ramp
>Launches boat
>gets back in truck
>hits the gas
>truck wheels just spin truck starts going backwards.
>truck is now half way in the water
>keeps trying to pull out
>nothing but spintires
>tfw gets pulled out by a guy in a S10.

This folks, is why you get good tires and not be such a cheap-ass. especially if you're going to launch a boat.

on another hand, I've seen a nigger rigged sunfire with a 12foot trailer attached, launch a boat perfectly.
>>
>>728708
Thanks for the advice. I'll probably do that eventually but for now I'm poor. Think that 6wt sink tip would work well with some size 8 and 10 bead head Crystal buggers, size 8 muddler minnows, and size 10 grey ghosts for crappie this spring?
>>
>>728718
those sizes are probably too big for the 5/6wt

I would stick around 16-22 for nymphs, maybe a few 14's and for streamers an 8 and 10 should be OK, just a bit weird to cast, maybe go a bit smaller on the streamers
>>

What's a good way to get a relatively inexpensive boat? Something that doesn't require a lot of maintenance or storage space. I want to get on the water with my old man more than the one week a year we rent.

I was thinking like a 12 foot aluminum. Something I can at least stand in. Should I even bother looking at used or are they more trouble than they're worth?

A well-built (this important) aluminum skiff that's been even crudely maintained is basically a fucking tank; buying one used is fine and depending on how large it is and how strong you are you can launch and retrieve it by hand out of a pickup.
>>
>>728705
You know how the boat in your pic has a V-shaped bow and hull on the bottom?
A jonboat doesn't have that. It has a flat bottomed hull.
They're great for fishing shallows and marshes because they have a very low draft; you don't get stuck in the mud nearly as bad. People also use them to hunt ducks out of them, because they don't rock as much as a V-hull.
The tradeoff comes in rough water. They are not good in rough seas or bad weather.
>>
>>728742
>>728755
When you're fishing marshes and shallow areas, the flat bottom means you don't hang up on the shore or the bottom nearly as much or as badly. So it's useful for basically all fishing in the Southern US.
You spend a lot more time fishing and a lot less time outside the boat trying to lift it up off of the weeds while waist deep in muddy, gator-infested awfulness. Like I said before, it's not nearly as good for big water or rough seas, but where the marshes never end and the rivers are shallow, it's exactly what you want.

How do I do my leaders and tipits so that I don't lose that section of expensive mainline? Should I tie on a foot or two of #30 or #20 mono and tie off to that? Or get a microswivel that's not heavy enough to fuck the floatability of the line?

nail knot from fly line to tippet, then surgeons knot from leader to tippet, use the tippet material tag line of the surgeons knot to run a dry fly, or another nymph. if using a streamer then do not use a tag line for the surgeons knot.

this lets you cut the tippet when changing out flies, instead of the leader. you will only cut the surgeons knot if adding a tag line to it, or attaching a new tippet.

For the nail knot you can do a few things. I'll use a red mono that is slightly thinker than the starting diameter of the tapered leader, usually about 3 inches of it nail knotted to the fly line, with a perfection loop at the leader end so that you can swap leaders super easy, and not have to tie a nail knot each time you want to swap out the leader.

this also acts as a strike indicator if you choose to nymph without a bobber.

Yeah, it's amazing how little maint people do on their trailers considering the $ spent on the boat. I don't think the bearings on mine were greased until I got it. I'm so neurotic when it comes to pulling. Stop after 10 minutes and check everything. Stop every 30-60 mns after that and do a walk around. Take a good look at a boat trailer next time you see some in a parking lot. They are held together only by ubolts. That scares the shit out of me.

Nymphing refers to a technique where the unweighted fly drifts below the surface, targeting the shallow subsurface area where most fly larvae are.
Streamer fishing is more like the deep water jigging of the fly fishing world, with weighted flies that cause it to actively sink, and sometimes even sinking lines to get the fly down even deeper.

Since a plain WB is meant to imitate fly larva but is not weighted with anything more than its hook, it's a nymph. Adding a brass bead to make it sinking turns it into a streamer.
>>
>>729131
That was a pic I took for what I would reccommend as a beginner bass fishing kit.
>>
>>729073
If you don't have a loop-to-loop connection, a nail knot won't slip and its wraps slide right through your rod's eyelets without hanging up.
>>
>>729139
>>728966
I love the question because of the controversy and debate behind it. The only thing that shows passion more than agreement and acceptance is debate and discussion. Get two people who share an opinion together and you will see contentment and peace. Get two people who have valid opinions where neither is inherently wrong and you see true passion
>>
>>729139
I mean technically unweighted woolybuggers on a dead drift also mimic dead or stunned leeches and baitfish which make easy meals.
>>
>>729139
>Since a plain WB is meant to imitate fly larva but is not weighted with anything more than its hook.

I think the definition of a WB differs from place to place? In my neck of the woods it's considered to imitate a leech, and one with a bead of varying color imitates a leech sucking on an egg; where-as some around here fish larger ones as streamers, imitating elvers, and other small baitfish.

I think the beauty of the WB is it's utter versatility, you can fish small ones on a nymph rig, drifting them, you can swing them to imitate a leech, or retrieve/jig to imitate baitfish.

>>729159
I do as well, it's cool to read the experiences and opinions of fly fishers, and other styles of fishing and how they vary from region to region.

I personally never fished a WB as a nymph, but after reading >>729139 I am certainly going to try it.

Hey fishbros I'm gonna get out for some bass next week. I havnt fished in a while but I have this brand new Mitchell 300x and 6 lb clear line and 8lb low viz green line. Which line?
>>
>>729169
6lb is nice if you are mostly targeting like 2lb bass and crappie, but I would probably do the 8lb line if you think you may be hooking 3lb+ bass on the regular. Especially if your lakes are weedy.
>>
>>729169
>>729170

I use 6llb mono exclusively for bass, pickerel, crappie, and evidently trout now lol. I caught a 3.5 pound bass the other day with no problem. Just set your drag properly.

My buddy uses 8# mono, and it works just as good. I get a little better casting distance and less visibility to picky fish, but both work just fine.
>>
>>729169
8 and consider picking up 10
>>
>>729176
This is also true,

I always liked 8lb on my medium rods when I ran mono because it gives you that little extra security when you snag some weeds or hit that random catfish or carp. But you can land anything on light line as long as you tire them out and are close to the water. If he's tossing largemouth bass sized lures, the casting difference befween the #6 and #8 won't be much. But if he wants to use 1/8oz lures sometimes, I would do the #6.
>>
>>729169
I've used 8 lb mono for about everything for the past 5+ years

Bought a 1000+ yard spool of it ,
Caught everything from tiny panfish, finickey trout, up to bass 10+ lbs in incredibky weedy ponds
Pickerel (though I have lost lures) and catfish

I didn't really like that lake. I'm sure there are some decent bass, but too many people fishing there. Next time I will make him meet me at one of my lakes.

He got a bluegill and I got a few nibbled but he was hoping for more. I was stoked he got something. He had a decent new Shimano Sedona/Sellus combo that was like halfway spooled with 12lb and still had the security tag on it. Then he had a shoe box with a couple bags of Zoom and a Rapala in it. I cut the security tag off, gave him a Rooster tail, and told him we gotta spool more line on that reel and get him a tackle bag.

At least he has a nice rod and reel to start out with. He said he got it on sale at Dick's for like $80.

My goodwill has nothing. I've got sasquach feet and finding shoes that fit is near impossible. Though there is a second hand shop that usually has a rack of overalls about my size

Anyone in Madison WI area and know of where good shore fishing spots are? Only fish in this state I have caught was at Devil's Lake.
>>
>>729490
That city is located between two giant lakes, there has to be a decent spot somewhere to fish from the shore.

I do remember lots of it being surrounded by houses though which kinda sucks.

Are there any industrial or commercial areas nearby with lakes that seem like they are mostly for show? You can always try those for some bass.

Look up bodies of water near you on Google maps then Google a map of the body of water of your choice and it should show shore fishing access as well as boat launches>>729495

Pic related looks like a nice lil spot too if you can get over there. It looks like there is a canal that runs between the two large lakes and I would try to get near the inlets of that. Otherwise any other streams or rivers that meet the lakes.

There are plenty of spots, just none that I've found that are on public property, I won't be casting into some people swimming, and actually have fish biting that I have found.

>>729500
>>729508
Thanks, I'll have to look for those.

>>729497
I actually almost moved right by that park, just two problems, that is a functioning dam (or some structure between the lake and the river) and it seems like a rather popular park (but I was there in early spring so too cold for swimmers, still snow on the ground).
>>
>>729530
Is it new? Looks like the dividers are still together.

Pass it on to some anon here if you aren't going to use it. Find somebody living in the stone age who still uses a hard box. Or like dude I work with who carries around a shoe box at the lake.

I did a thing today. I caught two on the swimbait (lol what) and snagged two on my ultralight. Pulling in a big carp on the UL is pretty fun. Caught a couple bass too but nothing special.
>>
>>729533
Boxes are normally cheap enough anyway as long as you buy them at a good time from the right place.

You should look into the actual fishing backpacks with the 3600 boxes. Those things are nice.

>>729541
>they actually hit swimbaits?
Apparently. I was just swimming it super slow along the bottom, because the bass where I fish seem to only like easy meals. It happened once and I thought it was just a fluke. I think they only went after it because it's a berkley powerbait.
>>
>>729552
Yeah I like those Powerbait ones that are already rigged up. The smaller 1.5" or 2" ones, I have them in black/silver and firetiger and the medium ~3" ones I have in Firetiger but I need to grab that same size in a different color. I have been using the Storm and Tsunami ones quite a bit when the water is really clear or there is moderate cover.
>>
>>729553
I like the ones i was using in the pic I was posted. I'm fishing pretty stained water, but I can still see those pretty good. Plus they have the smell so I'm assuming they're obvious to the fish. I also had luck with the storm minnows with the curly tail. You just gotta cast close to the fishes.

I have had really good luck with the Gulp curly tail minnows. The freshwater selection is limited, but the saltwater in the blue bags are the exact same thing and they have more colors in the 3"-4" range which is nice. Only problem is they don't have that real natural coloring which is a big reason I use the Storm ones in clear water.
>>
>>729561
So, I'm going to try to find some MASSIVE inline spinners, a few guys at work said I should give the pike inline spinners a try, but I think those might be too small for striper.

Found a few guys that make salt specific inline spinners, going to order a few I think.

I can't seem to find the websites now, but if anyone can find a 3oz + inline spinbait let me know.

I think you will be able to find big ones but that weight is going to be an issue. Even that giant one I posted isn't very heavy. It says "Marathon" on the blade just in case you want to see if they are still around.

Alternatively it can't be too hard to make your own.

Nah it isn't articulated. It's just how that first hook just hangs off the bottom like that.

There's another company called Marathon but I don't think it's the same. They make some spoons and bucktails and all sorts of shit but no inlines as far as I could see. This one is a real squirrel tail and everything.

I gotta hang on to that one tho. It's one of the few things I kept from my dad's shit. Vintage lures like that can actually be found pretty cheap on eBay a lot of the time since everybody has their dad's or grandpa's old tackle box. I bet you could find the same one of you look and it's probably about the same price as something new like that from a big brand would cost.

Like I said though, it is big but I don't think it's close to 3oz.

That white with the little red strike area looks nice.
>>
>>729618
oops, meant to write that

9" Northland Bionic Bucktail 1.2oz which will be perfect for my inland striper rig. I really want to try these under the dam, I think they would perform better than what I'm using, but I could be wrong. It's a unique place to fish, and I think this might be a good thing to try.

I found a few 10" 2.8oz ones that I picked up as well.
>>
>>729621
Get some round nose pliers and make your own of the exact size weight and colour you want.
>>
>>729621
Damn, 2.8oz? What do those look like?

Most of the ones I saw for musky seem to be just over 1oz like that 9" one you posted. You ordered them already?
>>
>>729585
I release pretty much everything I catch except young hatchery fish because they usually die in their first winter anyway.
>>
>>729625
no not yet, watch listed them. but that style is what I'm going for. I'll probably pick one or two up and then learn to make them.

Depends on the fish
Trout, steelhead, crappie, bluefish, spot, flounder and flounder usually get eaten if they're legal size
Also fish ohio for rainbow trout is 29 inches

Nothing makes me feel like a toolbag quite like launching my little 12 footer. Not being able to see the trailer (until it's visible in the side views and thus too far out) always makes things interesting. Been getting easier with time thankfully.

>>728748
>>728756
I've used SearchTempest in the past for things like my truck's cap. It's a craigslist aggregator so you plug in your zip code, what you're looking for, and how many miles radius and it'll return results in that range. My pops and I use a 12' flat bottom and it isn't too bad. Big deep cycle battery powers a 50lb thrust trolling motor for hours so long as we're not running it constantly.

I'd recommend something a bit longer and a wide body if possible for added stability if the price is right (note that a wide body probably won't fit most truck beds so a trailer is a must). I missed a 16' extra wide a while back that was listed for only $600 which was a steal. I lurk craigslist pretty religiously now in hopes I won't miss out again.
