It was, the forest is practically in my backyard so by the end of the year I should know it pretty well.

>>723557
Texas, right? How is it during the spring? A little easier to walk and explore without everything so overgrown? Or is it warm enough there where the little shit never quite dies out?

I should try and take a trek out into the glades and find some cool shit. I just know the bugs would piss me off unless I went on one of the cooler and dry days in like Jan or Feb.
>>
>>723559
yeah, Texas. I hiked all winter long. There were many plants that never really died off but it's easier to hike through it all in winter, especially if want to leave the trail. Everything has pretty much come out down here at this point and it's been "spring" since early February really. It's not quite as thick as it will get, I was on some pretty remote sections of 9.5 mile loop trail yesterday and you can tell that not many people go back that far so I imagine in a month or so it'll be more difficult.

They're so close too but there is just no real reason to go. Maybe we can go search for dead bodies together.

It's just odd because from the Atlantic to that 869 Expressway, everything is developed. Then directly on the other side of the highway, it is all just tall grass, shrubs, and swamps. With an airboat you could get around bretty gud I think since there are lots of random canals that run through.
>>
>>723566
OP here. I got three or four mosquito bites yesterday, but it wasn't too bad. I didn't even use my DEET. I'm a damned mosquito magnet though, so in a couple weeks it will be an absolute necessity.

We went to a clearing deep in the state forest. Gave each kid a lighter to start their own marshmallow roasting fire.
>>
>>723586
That sounds fun. But dem fires....you tryin to burn down the whole forest? No offense, but that's not really how you do it.
>>
>>723585
It depends on the wind too. Since I live close to the ocean, if I stay near my house the bugs aren't too bad. But when I start going west a little bit on a calm day, the skeeters and gnats get really annoying. Especially after I catch a few fish, the fucking gnats can't resist that smell. I try to just chain smoke cigs and that helps keep them at bay a little bit.
>>
>>723582
kayak, hammock, bugnets of various deployment. we'll tie the kayaks off to the mangroves and lash the hammocks up there. easy fishin' for you and good tography and recording for me! i've never really been to amywhere like the glades so it would pretty exotic for me

If I did the kayak deal, I would rather go do it somewhere out by the Keys or like south of Miami before you quite get to Key Largo. Lots of really calm sounds and everything. And if you go further into the Keys, the water on the north side of some of the islands is really clear and shallow and tons of random little uninhabited islands. Plus dat ocean breeze and less bugs.

There's one little road that goes to some state nature center. That seems like a good place to try and launch a kayak from.

Looking at maps, it looks like the west side of the Everglades would be more trees and stuff like in your pic. The east side from what I have seen is a lot more tall grass. Almost looks like a prarie until you try to walk in it and are stepping in water.

>dem fires.
it rained pretty hard the day before. still it was my job to stomp out any embers. we had jug of water too. the DNR logs this section extensively so maybe an underbrush fire would be an improvement
>>
>>723612
yeah it seems the everglades, being as big as they are, have quite a few different regions. someday i'm gonna make it down there. maybe i can organize it as a recording expedition and get some sponsors or something.

>>723615
by any chance is that you digrpat?
>>
>>723615
Here we have controlled burns regularly carried out by the dept of parks and wildlife, in the national forests, of course, it's the forest service that does it. I just noticed all of the underbrush, dried leaves and such and it set off my alarm bells. I'm glad you took precautions anon - didn't mean to be a jerk about it.
>>
>>723615
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if those fires were not within your city or state ordinances. They could be completely illegal.

Even if it did rain the day prior, or you had some water, it still isn't a good idea to build uncontained fires with dead brush all around. Not to mention it isn't really your call to start an underbrush fire that you see as an improvement; let the parks department worry about that.

>>723630
I would say those are the least caring precautions you could take.

>Here we have controlled burns regularly carried out by the dept of parks and wildlife

Let's keep it that way.

perhaps so, but it's something. the brainless people I see /out/ around here can't even be bothered to do that stuff. Of course, I do live in Texas.

Totally agree; and I don't mean to be a dick. Just have a soft spot for unruly fires; I've seen some devastating shit.

On another note. I hope your kids realize how lucky they are to have a pops that brings them outside to do cool ass shit. I just wish I had realize this when I was their age and my dad would bring me to build fires and hike around in the forest.

Keep it up anon, What you are doing is pretty fucking based.

Pic related was my weekend. Hunting pickerel with the lady in the sub freezing spring.
>>
>>723640
I wasn't actually the anon with the fires, I'm OP, the texasfag and the one who called it out initially.

That aside, hunting sounds fun. Nice bridge in the background btw

The coastal rock is mostly sandstone, the weathering is really strange. It makes for great rock climbing and there are a couple places where you can invert.

Mainebub gettin salty

I set a porta potty on fire once. That was bretty awesome. Burnt all the hair off my face and fucked up my hand but totally worth it. Also a couple dumpsters but I think the john was my favorite because it was at night in some park off the highway and you could see these towering flames from the highway.

well the anon with the fires is doing his kids good.

picture is from this morning we were scouting the river yet again at low tide and made a nice fire to make our morning coffee on.

>>723646
ok. that is fucking hilarious. I would pay to watch that.
>>
>>723649
I fucked up tho. Poured like a gallon of gasoline inside the john and I left a little trail to light. The gasoline trail just soaked into the ground. So I opened up the door a lil bit and lit it from the ground. All the vapor and fumes blew the door open and fucked me up.

yeah ranger rick would be pissed at the fire, but this is BFE. the state legislator cut the DNR budget drastically and told them to make up the diff by selling logging rights. a little fire is nothing compared to the damage done by the elected officials. im actually honored to meet a DNR worker cause they're so rare to see any more
