Looking for a bushcraft knife to go innawoods with. I'm going to rely on it heavily

Is CRKT a good name? I was looking at pic related on amazon for $65

Why would you buy a serrated blade?

>>721898
Stop being a faggot, that knife will do the same job that a $300 safe queen knofe does.
>>
>>721880
>part serrated
>CRKT
>$65

Is this a troll post? Jesus OP there are literally countless better options. Look at something from Becker/Ka-Bar, a Mora bushcraft maybe, Ontario has a bunch under $65, or even something from Helle or similar Scandinavian companies. Do a small amount of research at least before you blow a days pay on that heap of trash.
>>
>>721903
Actually, if you're not that stupid (but I know you are) you can see that there's a advice :
Don't buy a shitty cheap 60$ if you're going to ' rely on it heavily '
Of course if you're just another faggot that actually doesn't go /out/ but wants a big useless collection of gear, then go for it.

Oh also it's not like there's a Knife general on every fucking page of this board
>>
>>721880

>>
>>721880

>>
>>721880
Everybody will defend their favorite knife brand OP.

I've carried CRKT pocket knives for 20+ years and have never had a problem.

I would also recommend some of the classics from kbar
>>
>>721946
i have carried crkts every one of them has failed
>>
>>721946
>>721953
They make a good, cheap, disposable pocket folder and most of the people that carry them would destroy anything else. If you treat your knife like trash what's the point on spending $100+ on something if your going to not sharpen it, pry open shit and generally thrash it. There's a reason that the $10-30 price range accounts for the majority of knife sales, its because the majority of people are dipshits and would rather dispose of something once it fails then ever learn how to maintain it. Anyways, there isn't much to say about brand loyalty. If you can't handle owning something nice keep on buying your cheap disposable folders.
>>
>>721969
you assume too much. every crkt folder ive had has failed during extremely light use breaking down cardboard at a pizza delivery job. they are shit. shit. absolute shit. if you don't think so then you've never had anything better.

>>721984
I've never owned one. Because I had a SAK as a kid and once I became an adult I purchased a mini grip as my first folder. I still have it to this day and consider it $60 well spent. My point is that your a chump for buying something like that in the first place. Also I do not buy for a second that "breaking down cardboard" destroyed your knife. I have friends that carry cheap walmart Sheffields that haven't failed in years. These are the same people that pass them off to me to sharpen and loctite screws on etc. but a $130 PM2 would serve them no better because they aren't knowledgeable knife owners.

If cutting cardboard at your pizza delivery job destroys a knife, maybe you should examine the owner not the tool. Also anybody with any real need for a pocket folder would laugh at the idea of spending money on a CRKT because it's a waste of money. Even if it doesn't fail on you, you are using a clearly inferior tool for the job. Which was my main point to OP, spend your money elsewhere but more than that, it looks like you do not even know what to look for.
>>
>>721880
>partly serrated
WHY THE FUCK.
DESU you'll be fine with a Mora, they're cheap, simple, and reliable. If you want to spend a lot of money on something a little nicer, buy yourself an ESEE.
>>
>>721999
>examine owner not tool for cutting cardboard
no you dumb fuck, fuck you and your shitbrain. they came loose as fuck, the locks failed, opening mechanisms failed
nothing to do with me because there's only one fucking way to cut carboard you faggot fucking faggot
>>
>>722003
Nice retort. Maybe you should invest in a nice folding box cutter for your next blade purchase. The blades are replaceable, you can even get fancy ones with wooden grips and the like.

If you knew the first thing about owning knives A) you wouldn't have bought a CRKT to begin with and B) all of the "issues" you stated you would have had the capacity to fix/prevent. Unless you keep on buying lemons, but explain to me again why I know people that carry cheap gas station blades that still function? Oh wait. You can't. Who's the faggot now?
>>

If you are going to spend $65 on a bushcrafting knife, get dat Ka-Bar Becker, Ontario, or Essee. CRKT makes some cool knoives, lots of decent stuff for $25-$40. But those other 3 brands have much more traditional solid blades that will be better for what you are trying to do.

Why does everyone shit on CRKT? Is it bad steel or something?

The reason I wanted one in the first place is because they're carried in a local shop that can get me a good deal.
>>
>>722287
I'm sure the knife is more than adequate for 99% of the things you will need it for, but there are numerous better options for the money.
>>
I use my 13$ mora for all the little things at camp; shaving sticks to make a feather stick, then cutting fish, and...actually that's pretty much it. What are people doing when they camp that they need all this gear and huge knives?
Typical 3 day for me

>hike out Friday in the day
>set up tent, go collect/break branches to make a fire
>shave a good stick while enjoying the woods at dusk, light fire
>warm up some food while I get ready for bed, eat, sleep

Then in the day I'll hike around on day 2, fish, just explore the eco system, maybe if I'm bored I'll grab fallen branches or logs and build something like a lean-to with a couch, read a bit outside, cook some camp food with whatever I find edible around me, basically just enjoying what's around. When do you ever need a big knife?
>>
>>722287
And I just looked into the blade steel, and its pretty bad. I would put it on the lowest end of the spectrum of useable knife steel. Closest equivalent is along the lines of 440A or AUS-4 to AUS-6. For $20, sure. But for $65? No way man. Avoid.
>>
Holy shit I was going to feel like I was the only one to be shilling Becker but damn you guys did it for me :) get the bk16 and then if you go into the deep end of expensive knives you'll understand your first decision was the best. A have a bk2 and as it is a beast of a knife I'd rather you taste a 14 or a 16 as your first one man. Once you feel the ergos you'll love it

A lot of their stuff is kinda tacticool and goofy as well. I like my little SPEW for a small EDC that I barely notice is there. Anybody familiar with Ontario Knife Company?

Thinking of buying the Bushcraft Field Knife. It's 5" blade full tango 5160 carbon steel.
>>
>>723073
Ontario makes great knives for the price. And 5160 steel is well known for its toughness, makes a good smaller blade but really shines in larger applications. If you like it I say go for it.

>>
it all depends on the climate you will be in and the tasks at hand. i suggest reading this http://bestpocketknifetoday.com/discovering-the-best-knife-steel/ read find out what kind of steel type suits your situation or personal preference. then you should think of the size best for you. if you are going to baton with it(personally id rather use a small axe, but thats just me) id suggest a bigger blade maybe 6inch cutting edge. also id suggest a full tang blade as well.

Look at the esse 5 or 6. Yes they are pricey, but very good quality. Look up abuse videos of the knives on YouTube. People beat the snot out of them and even baton them to split wood. Also the esse laser strike is a good option, point is better for drilling, and it has a shallow recess in the hilt for use with bow drilling for fire starting
>>

This, tons of people recommend them, look up use and abuse videos on YouTube. NOT reviews videos, but videos where they actually use the knife and put it through its paces.

Don't buy a serrated big knife, it can only cut rope and a small fully serrated folder does a quicker job.

If you want a chinese shit knife, look up Schrade knives. They're junk, but they're cheap.

If you want a cheap and good bushcraft knife, buy a mora.

Nah, the handle looks questionable in the comfort department. With the firesteel inserted into it.... Well it just seems kinda janky. Buy a Mora companion and ranger band a fire steel to the sheath. Should be about the same price. I actually prefer the Mora 510 above all else.

And while Mora makes a damn fine stainless blade in the Sandvik, you would be much better of with their carbon 1095 blades. You will get the increased toughness, ease of sharpening, and it arguably takes a finer edge.
>>
>>726649
i think the combo grind is kinda funky
also didn't they say they use 01 steel or am i missing something?
>>
>>726827
The combo grind I have not used, but I get the idea behind it. Stronger scandi ground towards the handle and flat ground towards the tip for better slicing. I forget Moras proprietary name for this, but you get the idea. Seems kinda cool but more gimmicky than anything. They've been using this grind since the 80s IIRC.

And Mora uses plain ol' 1095 for their carbon steel blades. Not even a fancy equivalent name, just good ol' 1095. If they had some blades in O1 I would be ecstatic to try them out, but assumedly they wouldn't still be $12-20 a pop. And that's kind of the charm of Mora. If I'm going to spend significantly more for a Mora in O1 I'd probably look to some other brands or even a custom.

I have used the combo grind on the 2000 and it's really good for food prep but it's a bitch to sharpen
>>
>>721880
Well the price point can get you a good knife, but I recommend figuring out what are you going g to use it for.
Need to cut wood, a small hatchet costs $20, and a corona folding saw another $20.
Need it for food prep and cutting cordage, opening packages, a $20 folder will do, I've had my Kershaw tanto folder thingy for about 4 yeats, a buck 110 is also about $20. A $5 dollar small kitchen knife is what I use for food prep, I will never need to replace it unless I do something super stupid with it. The thin blade is also great for cleaning fish.
There $65 bucks worth of shit you can use forever as long as you are not a ninja and try to cut rock with them.
If you just want a user cool knife that's all you. Spend away. I also have a $60 k bar I've only ever used it to get inside coconuts at a party, It's great for looking cool. I'm sure when I use it /out/ it'll be great too.

I'm not sure if they are made to order but it looks like they have a stock knife with either orange g10 or green micarta handles made of O-1 tool steel for $160 American. Some of the other pictures on the knife page though are not that model so I'm assuming the guy does customs but I've not heard a single thing about this guy's knives. I actually heard of him because his wool shirt-jacket thing is supposed to be top-tier and was visiting the site to look at that.
>>
>>721880
I've heard decent things about some of their products from both third party reviews, /out/ and others. I'd say trying one of their cheaper blades may be worth a shot but I'm not sure it is something you'd want to depend on in a survival situation.
>>
Bought for $11.00, very nice, haven't used it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGR75MdCRak
>>
>>721880
The one piece of advice I will give is to not get a serrated blade, I bought one before I knew much about camping and bushcraft, you will rarely need a serrated blade and it makes fine tasks that you would normally "choke up" on the blade to do very hard because you now have to do them further along the blade where you have less power to makes cuts.

Learn from my mistake and don't bother with serrations.
>>
>>722287
I've got several CRKT folders and they're all great, even after moderate abuse and daily use.

Some of the flashy models look more show than go, but the ones I have are great. The lake signature is one of my favs
