A question for USA citizens, what Is that makes bass such a prized fish? Why is it so popular to fish in the USA?
>>
>>720984
they fight somewhat hard, are somewhat aggressive, can get to large ish size , its fun fishing topwater for them because of explosive takes,
>>
>>721015
So, something like trout or salmon, grayling?
>>
>>721029
ateast where i live more of them are larger then trout, when we stock trout in the river the majority of them are just around 1 pound, while the average bass size i catch is probably closer to 1.5 to 2 lbs, pound for pound at smaller size ( one to two pounds) bass probably fight a bit harder than trout, at larger sizes they are probably similar strength though i find more large bass than large trout, bass are more agressive honestly than trout, plus top water strikes are great
>>
>>721032
>>721029
plus some places down south get large bass ( 10 plus pounds) around here up in the northeast my largest trout is 4 or so lbs, while my largest bass was 12 almost 13 pounds
>>
>>720984
I know you're talking largemouth bass but I live near the chesapeake bay and striped bass is pretty much the number 1 fish here. Hell of a fight, tastes good, variety of methods to catch them.

They're just versatile fish I guess.
>>
>>720982
You made a good purchase.
Love the xrap.

>>720984
Not sure about largemouth, but seabass is one of the tastier fish species in the Adriatic, which can be caught from shore. Commonly known as the king of the adriatic.
Plus they are mad picky, and careful.

They say that if the seabass sees you, you wont catch it that day

>>720908

>USPS is bustin Skid's balls
I'm usually pretty chill but it was an hour away from me and now it's back in another state, and late
Ill burn something I've got some gasoline and a glass bottle around here somewhere
>>
Here is why carp taste like mud
Only about 1/3 of the things they eat is food the rest is mud, silt, rocks and other garbage on the bottom of the lake. They're really inefficient eaters because they have no true stomach. Basically their digestive track is "straight" so they're always eating, and they don't really care what it is that they're eating if it smells close enough to food. If there is corn on the bottom of silty lake, they will just munch about where it should be and eat whatever they get till they get the corn.
>>
I need some line suggestions for lightweight spinning gear from shore, braid seems overkill for what i do

I use it for leaders. I had some lighter Vanish on a rod for a little while but I wasn't a big fan of it. Would rather just do a long leader if I needed to.

So I don't have a ton of experience with it as a main line. There are mixed opinions. Some people say it is decent as a main line while others strongly prefer other brands. Just remember if you run Vanish or any flouro as your main line, your lures will run quite a bit deeper.

Caught 3 chain pickerel yesterday on 6llb mono. Didn't lose a lure all day haha.

Actually, not true. I was testing a new line type (ardent gliss. Please don't buy it, it's awful.) It has ridiculous line diameter for its strength, on the package. I made one cast with a 1/4oz jig, backlashed a little, and then line snapped in the middle between the lure and rod. "19" pound test, broke by a moderate cast of a 1/4Oz jig...never again. My 20# braid casted just as well, and never broke.

Anyway, I'm fishing the blue fox a while later and I hook into some line. Got my jig back haha. Got it on film too, pretty neat.

Moral of the story, fuck ardent gliss. Seriously, read the reviews. Too good to be true...

Idk, it depends. With longer Rapalas, sometimes I will hook the fish on one of the forward hooks and the rear ones can get caught on the side of the fish. But it normally isn't too bad and the hooks come out fairly easily. If any doubt, crush the barbs.
>>
>>721273
Zander, also known as Perchpike ;) But they do look alike, that's why I tried to fool ya boys :)
Caught it on a dropshot here in Sweden. Water temp around 6-7 celsius, just few clouds in the sky, but this boy had hidden in a shadowy part of the water just by the trees.
Tried quite some American lures that are not available here in Europe - just like bass jig, northern pikes like it but it seems risky to flip'em without steel wire. Gonna try punching mats this summer!

Largemouth Bass get pretty big, are pretty aggressive, aren't picky about water conditions (i.e. They don't need crystal clear water or exclusively warm or cold temps to survive ) or forage, are easy to raise commercially (i.e., for stocking ponds and rivers), are tasty to eat, and will readily strike a number of lures.
What's not to like?
>>
Hey, so I haven't been fishing in 12+ years heading out tomorrow to try and get the feel of it again.
I picked up a Daiwa BG13 at a garage sale for like $20 cdn, did I get ripped off or is this an okay reel.

Also curious about lure recommendations, in southern alberta heading to an area with a decent amount of river trout.

Those reels look pretty nice from a quick google search. Nice buy. And if you're heading for trout, I think you want to do some jigheads with small rubber baits like PowerBait or any of the brands. Small grubs. They sell these "Trout Eggs" in little jars too. Also some smaller inline spinners like Rooster Tails or Mepps. I don't really fish for trout, but the tackle looks similar to what you would use for crappie.

>>721338
I'm def gonna grab a spinner in that color combo if I see one.

>>
>>720819
>I give it 2 months before you put 30# on there
I've forgotten but what was your reasoning for a lower lb test braid over matching an equivalent mono diameter, excess strength aside? I hit the pond today to see how things would go with the line getting wet and aside from a couple small backlashes while dialing in it seems great as is. If I were using mono, or worse yet fluorocarbon, I'd have probably been relining but the braid seems to behave nicely.

One thing I did notice is that it was pretty difficult to get walking the dog consistently. I'm not ready to blame the strength of the braid yet for that. I think it's more a combination of factors including the higher retrieve speed of the reel, stiffer rod, and the lack of stretch from braid in general. I was starting to get pretty good at it before I had to leave.

>>721205
They sell it both as leader material and in typical spools and service spools. I have a few rods I line entirely with 12lb because I like that it sinks and has low visibility. Never tried anything close to their 50lb. I'd imagine it to be thick and unwieldy (that's what she said) except maybe as a leader or when used on large reels.
>>
>>721412
I agree with you on that 50lb flouro point. It already seems kinda stiff in lower tests. The 20lb Vanish I use for leaders is a little tough to tie tight knots with.

And with the braid, I always find that matching the diameters is a bit overkill and everything just seems to go so much smoother running a size or two lower. When I got my first baitcaster, I put 40lb Power Pro on there because I figured it would be just like 12lb.

Then I realized how damn strong the 40lb was, and threw 30lb on there and it is still overly strong but is much more manageable. And then I did 20lb on my next baitcaster and can cast 1/2oz+ lures so far and have no fears about losing any fish or getting stuck in weeds.

Gonna try some unorthodox stuff fluke fishing in may. I added silver solder to the inside of it to try and make it neutral buoyant. I'll update when I get it in the water lol.

I also plan to use inline spinners on a rig for fluke and porgy this spring. Cheap ones, no mepps lol. Idk what the salt is gonna do to em, but we'll see.

The two hard lures in the middle, with the two sets of spikes in the back are squid/cuttlefish jigs.
The soft shads can catch you some sea predators. Bluefish, seabass, the likes.

The grubtails and other wormy and curly soft baits are more freshwater looking to me and idunno about that.

I guess I'd probably start with the coast around here, or one of the little islands. There are a few rivers but they look pretty shitty. See: river at coordinates -35.543856, 138.630597 in Google Maps/Earth. I live reasonably close to there, further southwest.

Island in pic is called Granite Island, just to the south of those coordinates, it's a popular fishing spot from what I've seen, and southwest of that is The Bluff which has a jetty that people often fish from. I know people catch squid there but I honestly would have no idea what to do with a squid if I caught one. I think there are also flathead, leatherjackets, snook, tommy ruffs. A bit further to the east at Goolwa there's mulloway, salmon trout, mullet and gar, but I'm not sure about down here.

You've got my attention, I for some reason (probably video games) have the notion that you catch squid at night and moreso during the winter months, any truth to that?

>>721676
Not the guy you're replying to but have squid. I've caught albacore that got brought into the boat and proceeded to cough up a few squid.
>>
>>721676
Not sure how it is in SA, but up here in South East QLD our main squid season is from roughly May to November, but they can be caught all year round if you put in the time to find them. I only target them at night, although you can catch them during the day. Best areas to target are seagrass beds and hard structure (rocks, coral, jetties, etc). Well-lit areas around jetties and bridges will always hold squid. My favourite way to target them is to walk along foreshores on a late night high tide with a spotlight or torch of at least 800 lumens. The light will spook some squid, but the ones that don't get spooked are very easy to catch. Keep the torch on the squid and flick your jig out past it and retrieve it so it comes within 1.5m of it. You're pretty much guaranteed a hookup.

Here its from august to early february.
Some people are still catching them though, but in the fall/winter time they are closest to shore, biggest in size, and easiest to catch.

Dusk and night work best for me, for my area. 7-10pm is usually the best time.
They seem to like light. As ive said once before, my two best squid spots were directly under light poles.
Plus when people go and vertical jig for them just outside the bay, they have a special light at the bow of their boat, facing directly into the water.

Pic related my last caught squid. It was tasty.

So what is everyone targeting over the next few months? I'm gonna chase mulloway (Aussie fish similar to the red drum that you guys get in America). They're pretty well known for being hard to catch, only accepting live/fresh baits and well presented lures. I'll be targeting them on lures only, mostly soft plastics.

NGD. Got a new reel for fresh/salt. Okuma av-30 b. Got kinda sick of the cheap stratus v (although this was also only like 35 bucks). Got a separate spool for 10 bucks so I can put 6# Mono on for fresh, and 20# braid for in the salt.

Were you the one saying you were looking to spend $50-$60? Just get anything from the major brands in the 1000 or 10 size and you will be set. If you see something you like, look up the reviews on Bass Pro's or Cabela's website real quick before you buy it. I remember looking at some cool Quantums in the $50-$100 range and like 1/2 of the reviews on a certain model all had the same part break so I didn't go for it. You will be able to tell right away when you look at the reviews if it is something like that.
>>
>>721957
That thing looks like a chode and I couldn't get past 0:45 because of the music.
>>
>>721967
Yeah that was me. 10lb braid seems like it would be a lot? I'm mostly going to be using it for panfish so I don't expect to be fighting something huge. Is there any disadvantage to using a low test mono?
>>
>>721974
10lb braid feels just like 4lb mono as far as casting. You could even go 8lb braid and be able to cast further than with 4lb mono.

I used ultralights with 4lb mono for years though and it was fine for panfish and smaller bass. But I like not losing lures every time I get into some weeds. It's also a little safety net in case you somehow get a big catfish or carp on there. Plus with 4lb mono, you really have to make sure to change it every season at a minimum or it becomes so weak. If you use it a lot and it is exposed to water and UV rays a lot, maybe more often. Main downside to braid is the price.

I'm just a braid shill. I'm just saying if you have never used braid before, give it a try sooner rather than later. It's so nice being able to cast an 1/8oz lure with some distance on 10lb line.
>>
>>721974
>>721979

I wouldnt recommend braid for panfish for a few reasons.

Its expensive. 4# mono is way cheaper.

It forces you to set the drag lower so that smaller fish still put up a good fight.

Braid is visible and panfish can be line shy. It would force you to tie a leader.

Mono is smoother than braid and will technically cast better imo.
>>
>>721983
Yeah if it is strictly for panfish, 4lb mono is ok. But I really like running the 10lb-15lb braid on my 2500 size reels that I use for bass and everything. Those reels would probably hold 6lb or 8lb mono on them, but running 10lb and 15lb braid, it casts 1/4oz lures much further than 8lb mono since it is thinner and lighter. And I get that extra security knowing I'm not gonna lose the giant bass that ducks into some weeds. If the water is really clear, I can always pop a flouro leader on there.
>>
>>721979
>Plus with 4lb mono, you really have to make sure to change it every season at a minimum or it becomes so weak. If you use it a lot and it is exposed to water and UV rays a lot, maybe more often.
Hmm I go fishing almost everyday so that might be something to worry about.

>Main downside to braid is the price.
That's not really a big deal it last forever

>if you have never used braid before, give it a try sooner rather than later.
I've only used 20lb braid before, but I like it a lot.

>>721983
>Braid is visible and panfish can be line shy. It would force you to tie a leader.
There isn't really any clear water where I am. It's all pretty murky. Will braid be that visible?

Pond jumping and boat gear. Covers bluegill, crappie, catfish, small and largemouth bass, and rainbow trout. The few soft plastic on the bottom are my go to.

If I'm on foot I'll grab a few baits from my collection and throw them in a small box and put it in my fanny pack.
>>
>>721983
braid always casts better than mono. Here's why

1. modern Super braids like sufix 832, pp8 and fins are very smooth, almost like mono.
2. Less line memory means your line induces less drag as it coils through the guides.
3. Less cross sectional area means less drag
4. higher strength to weight ratio means your line has less mass than the equivalent diameter of mono means longer casting distance.

Furthermore, the line weight has no influence on how "hard" a fish fights. If anything, braid makes them feel heavier because it has no stretch. A small fish tugging on braid will feel a lot stronger than one tugging on mono. A leader is something that should be applied anyways in most situations. If you use a good knot like the FG or alberto knot it shouldn't affect your casting distance either.

Braid also lasts longer. You have to change mono every 5-10 trips because of memory, saltwater damage, water absorption, abrasion and light damage. Braid will last 1-3 seasons of constant fishing. And when the leading edge is worn out you respool it backwards giving you another 1-3 seasons of fishing (provided you don't cast past halfway through the spool).

It's expensive, I agree but I think you end up spending about the same amount of money on quality braid as you do with something like trilene big game after a few seasons.
>>
>>722016
To cap it all off: I was a mono user for at least 10 years before I switched to braid a year ago. I will never fish with mono again. The gains in sensitivity and line strength outweigh the costs and disadvantages for me.

I fish to catch fish and have a good time. If that means spending an extra 20 bucks a year on braid that's well worth it. It objectively helps me recognize more bottom terrain and strikes and therefore catch more fish.

Mono is fine. But if you can afford it, braid is the way to go.
>>
>>722016
+1

I just typed up a long ass thing and accidentally erased it but this basically covered it all. No memory, sensitivity, and being able to run thinner and lighter line while also being stronger is GOAT.

And the fact that you can run it 2 years, flip it around, and run another 2 years. If you fish a lot, it can end up being cheaper than mono over time.
>>
>>722012
I bought a handful of those Strike King soft baits a few weeks ago since they were on clearance at Dick's. Still gotta get some use out of though.

That big spinner bait box, where do you keep that in your bag? I could use one of those but there would be no good way to fit it in my bag so I just keep putting them in the 3700 boxes.

Makes me want a tackle backpack one day just so I can fit odd shit in there.

Also, do you bring that Trilene with you? If so, why? I used to keep line in my bag but not anymore aside from a roll of #8 and #20 flouro. Never needed anything other than the flouro while at the lake.
>>
>>722029
Not him but when I fish my 1000 series reels I keep an extra spool of braid with me in case I hook a big one and get spooled out. Even with 10lb braid I can only hold about 110yd of line.
>>
>>722041
I guess. I normally have more than one rod with me so if I somehow totally destroy all the line, I will just deal with it when I get home. And it happens so rarely that it isn't worth carrying another spool of line.
>>
>>721988
>>721983
I think I am gonna go with a light braid. What length rod should I get? 6ft seems to be the shortest ugly stik they have. I guess I could get a gander rod
>>
>>722016

Im a huge braid guy. I use it for lmb and almost everything saltwater. If i show you my line box, its 90% power pro lol. But i just dont see it as being the "go to" for bluegill and crappie haha.

Idk man, 20# power pro and 6llb mono do not cast the same, even at the same diameter.

When i say it makes for a better fight, i mean you can crank down the drag on heavier line. Lighter line forces a lighter drag which means the fish can take line the way a bass can take heavier drag.

Ive never seen a pro recommend braid for panfish unless you're fishing brush piles.

Also, not necessarily related, but mono streches, which allows some additional play during hooksets and fighting.

To each their own of course. I would recommend mono or copolymer for panfish though.

>>722045
For a 1000 series reel? Depends on preference. Anywhere from 5'6" to 6'6" would be reasonable for me but I would probably do 6'. Doesn't matter though, whatever you like.

If you are thinking about getting a new rod around the same price range as Ugly Stiks, you should check out Berkley Lightning Rods. I have a Shock Lightning Rod that I like a lot.
>>
>>722046
15lb braid would be a bit closer to 6lb mono btw.
>>
>>722046
I do not catch blue gill and stuff but I do fish for crappie. The wisdom passed around where I fish for crappie is to use a very light braid. They bite very lightly and if you're casting out to a brush pile or jigging deep water for crappie, braid is a must.
>>722050

Agree with this. I would go 6'6" for better versality and medium-light action. Medium is probably too stiff. It'll let you still catch panfish and have a good time while giving you the option to land big bass.
>>
>>722048
Never tried it. Looks kind of rough. Let us know if you like it.
>>
>>722056
I think next medium rod I do, I'm gonna go 7' or at least 6'9". I have 6'6" rods for so many of my setups. The two main rods I use for lake fishing, one is 6' and one is 6'6" and I can notice the extra distance from the 6'6" rod so much more when I'm really trying to launch it. Doesn't seem to affect accuracy or anything either.
>>
>>722065
I basically only fish 7'+ rods in medium or heavier. But I only fish saltwater except when I want catfish or crappie. I know one guy that uses a 10' carbon rod in ML. He uses only artificials from shore. He can launch baits a country mile.

Sedona 1000?

That's a solid setup. No complaints. What are you gonna end up doing for line?
>>
>>722073
Looks good. On my Battle 1000s I use 10lb power pro. You can fit about 100-120 yards of it comfortably. On the small reels make sure you spool it on very very tight. Have a friend apply tension or run it through a phone book with your foot controlling the tension. Leave 1/4-1/6" of empty spool so you don't get a birds nest.

My first setup almost 15 years ago was a tiny cheap shimano spinning set up. Caught many big fish on it.
>>
>>722082
He should be able to get a decent amount of 10lb braid on that thing (assuming he went that route). Mainebub runs 6lb mono on his Sienna 1000. I had 10lb PowerPro on a Sienna 500 and it didn't spool a ton, went down to 6lb SpiderWire and it held a bunch. But the next size up would've been perfect for the 10lb.
>>
Will a jig work with braid?
>>
>>722094
Yes. Just make sure to go on the heavier end because braid floats so it may sink slower. It's nice because the braid is so sensitive that you can feel every little rock and nibble.

I actually have one reel lined with SpiderWire's Flouro-Braid. It is braid that sinks like flourocarbon.

Hey guys, long time lurker here with a question.
I've been fishing a lot in Illinois, lived here my whole life. My pals are planning a trip (one or two days) down to Starved rock for this week. Anyone have any experience fishing there? Anything I should bring specifically or look out for?

I like those yellow blades. Let me know how that #0 casts on the 8lb.

>>722114
I've never used Fireline, but Braid seems to be more flexible than mono. Especially moreso than flouro. When you get to the bigger tests like 40lb (12lb mono diameter) it seems to be more manageable than the mono for sure. That's one of the reasons I like it so much. You can cinch down knots real tight. Especially after you use the line a few times and break it in.

It changes with brands though. PowerPro seems to be a bit more flexible than SpiderWire.

>>722137
Where in IL do you stay? Never been to Starved Rock but a bunch of people I know have been there. I think that might have been the park where my sister saw some kid jump off a cliff and kill himself a few years back.

Used to have good times on the Fox River with that same neighbor too. His grandpa's friend had a house on the river somewhere up near McHenry. We always used to go there on Saturday mornings. Just toss out a bunch of rods with walleye rigs and chill while the old guys played cards.

8lb braid is a little lighter than 4lb mono. As long as you buy a good brand, it should cast nice and smooth too.

I still haven't really messed with that Sienna 500 I rigged with 6lb. I need to take that one out and play around with some small Mepps and Rapalas and grab some of those Mayan Cichlids. Those things put up a hell of a fight. I also have some tiny jig heads and 1.5" Gulp minnows that would probably be great on the 6lb.

This boat ramp is a funny spot to fish from. Everybody looks at me like I'm retarded when I'm casting from there since boats are going in and out every 20min and they don't believe that I can catch anything. But I always get a couple largemouth and mayans when I'm there.

>>
>>722224
I thought you meant saltwater when you were talking about shore fishing.

So what the hell are you trying to do? As far as mono goes, I normally do 4lb-10lb depending on the reel. With braid, 6lb-20lb, maybe 30lb if I'm going for catfish or carp.
>>
>>722228

relax

i'm mostly curious what brands people are using, there's a lot of scams and garbage out there
>>
>>722224
>>722228
And braid isn't necessarily overkill. You can run a thinner and lighter line and still get more strength for when you want to rip a fish out of some weeds. It's not like you need 40lb braid to catch 1.5lb bass.

But sounds like you probably want to go around 6lb if you go with mono. It's light enough where you can still toss the small panfish lures, but at the same time shouldn't have a problem with 95% of bass. But the size of the reel will dictate what size line you are running as well so it would help to know that.

>>722231
I always just did Trilene. They have the XT and XS but I never really noticed a difference. P-Line, Spider Wire Mono, Seaguar makes mono too, right? They are all good brands. PowerPro is the standby for braid it seems like.

the name brands are all pretty comparable these days. power pro used to be THE braid to get but now the competitors have caught up. I really like power pro super slick 8 though. Smooth as butter but costs twice as much as normal PP.

Hell no. It's cheap, and more than enough for a lot of applications. I use mono on my giant trolling reels.

I like spiderwire too, but prefer the power pro. The spiderwire doesnt seem to last as long imo.

For mono, i run Berkeley big game for 20#+ in saltwater, and trilene for my 6# freshwater stuff.

I wanna try some suffix (braid and mono) next time i need to respool.

>>
>>722606
This. I never noticed much of a difference in that aspect. Flouro is the only one that doesn't lay on top of the water. Braid is slightly more bouyant I think.
>>
I fucking fucked up my main reel i think.

I was gonna dissassemble the fucking bail, because the line guide wasnt spinning, instead the line was chafing/rubbing against it when i reeled.
I take off the bail with the two arms, the screws are nice and easy.
Then when i try to unscrew the one screw holding the bail and arm where the line guide is, it is fucking stuck. Like no screwdriver or amount of force can unscrew it. Plus i probably stripped it at least 40% by now.
When i give up, and go inspect the reel itself, flinggggg, two parts of the bail return mechanism flings away. I only retrieve one part.

Now when i assemble it abck again since i have business to take care of elsewhere, the bail doesnt go completely down or completely up. (DOesnt close and open 100%)

Im so fucking pissed im this close to just buying another one.
>>
>>722609
I've noticed that braid is much easier to deal with, compared to mono, on windy days or fast moving water when fishing on the bottom. I guess it's because braid is so thin the wind/water doesn't catch the line as much.
>>
>>722612
look up model schematic. Then look at bail assembly. You can then see what part you're missing if at all.
>>
>>722612

What reel is it? You may have to order another part.

Or make it bail less haha.
>>
>>722612
Is it an Okuma? I remember MaineBub having a hell of a time finding Okuma schematics and part numbers. That's one thing I like about Abu. They are really good with that stuff even when it comes to old ass reels.
>>
>>722634
>>722612
But I remember you saying a lot about Spros and I know nothing about those.

Sounds like a good excuse to drop some money on a new reel. At least that's what I would do.
>>
Will I notice a difference from an ugly stik to something in say the $150 area? I haven't ever used a more expensive rod and I'm wondering if it's worth the extra monies.
>>
>>720984
>largemouth bass
typically larger, more aggressive, like to run more, aren't typically eaten (at least from still water, I've heard they taste better from rivers), all around fun fish to catch

>smallmouth bass
More explosive than largemouth, are known to jump out of the water, have a more beautiful color pattern, all around have a more eventful fight in them

Smallies are my favorite
>>
>>722652
Yes you will. Ugly stiks are not sensitive at all. They are durable. Even a CHEAPER rod like a berkley fire rod will be more sensitive than an ugly stik but also less durable.

For 150 you can get some very very nice rods with good guides and blank. Look up castaway rods. They have some good offerings for that price range that will outcast and outperform any ugly stik.
>>
>>722655

Castaway is nice. Manley makes a nice rod. 13 fishing also has nice rods for that price range.

For salt water, the penn regiment series is nice, as are shimano trevalas if you're looking for a bottom/jigging rod.
>>
>>722655
>uglysticks are not sensitive at all.

You're rod is too heavy if you think that.

I have an uglystick that I find myself using more often than my higher end freshwater rods.
>>
>>722634
Yep still can't find the part number for my NS reel. Might try to find someone with a 3d printer to make the part I need.
>>
>>722652
Even in the same price range, Ugly Stiks aren't sensitive at all compared to other stuff. Lots of rods in the $150 range seem to have a nice solid backbone but a sensitive tip. My most expensive rod is only $120 though so I have no clue what a G. Loomis is like on the water.
>>
>>722655
>>722660
Thanks. I don't mind spending money I just don't like wasting it. I've pretty much only used cheap (like $30 combo from walmart) and ugly stik rods. I feel like if gotten pretty good at detecting bites, but I probably have missed a couple fish in the colder months. Guess I'll shop around for a bit.
>>
>>722664
The more sensitive ones or at least slower action Ugly Stiks seem to have like no backbone though. I have no clue what I'm talking about however. All of my nicer rods are fast action so I guess it's hard to compare. I think I prefer that Lighning Rod Shock to the Ugly Stiks though.

>>722665
Is the part plastic?
>>
>>722606
>Mono floats too
it's not the same. Yesterday was the 1st time I've thrown braid and I can see the +'s and cons. I dont think I've ever replace by UL setup with it but ya never know. I'm giving it a fair shot this year.
>>
>>722655
>Ugly stiks are not sensitive
agree to disagree. Mine is sensitive as all hell.
>>
>>722664
The blank is so dense on the uglystik you can't differentiate very light ticks or bumps. The rod doesn't transfer vibrations well at all. You can tell if a fish takes your bait by the noodle bend sure but let's be real here, a 150 dollar rod will beat any ugly stik's performance except for durability.

I know a lot of people who are like you. They've been using ugly stik all their lives and will always be rooting for them. EVERY fishing forum has a handful. There's nothing wrong with an ugly stik but I don't think you can compare the performance of an ugly stik versus something like a castaway skeleton.
>>
>>722679
I also forgot to mention weight and casting distance. Guide size and separation are better optimized on higher end rods. Not to mention higher graphite blanks are substantially lighter. This is especially important if you're casting a lure the whole day. A lighter rod means you won't be as tired from fishing and you can also manipulate your lure with more finesse.

I still fish with my ugly stik when I soak bait and I have two ugly stik inshore selects as well for popping corks and bait fishing. But my castaway rods and american rod smith rods are much better in terms of performance.

These are japanese made baits. I think most bass fishing in japan is done in quarry type lakes and stocked ponds. The fishing conditions are well controlled. Need some advice. I accidentally destroyed my old fishing rod with a car trunk lid. It was pretty generic and cheap but worked well enough. I'm out to get a new one before Easter fishing, and somehow got talked into a seven foot pole. I'm pretty tall, but I've never used something this long and I'm mostly going to be pond and creek fishing. Am I going to look like a damn idiot with this, fishing in shallows from the shore with what seems like a boat rod?
>>
>>723066
no i almost strictly use 7 ft medium action from shore, nd ther extra length helps toss around shore cover , my 3 rods i use in freshwater are 2 7 ft rods both medium action, and one rod at 6 ft 6 ( or is it six foot) for my ultralight
>>
>>723066
Not at all. I run mostly 6'6" on my little bass combos and kinda want to go 7' or at least 6'9" with my next rod. Better casting distance and it helps when I'm fishing from shore through weeds or talk grass. Easier to get the lure out before ir gets caught up.
>>
>>723066
7' rods are pretty much ubiquitously used in Australia for light tackle fishing (especially flicking lures). And who cares if people think you look like an idiot? Best way to not look like an idiot is to catch fish, anyway.

My spinning reel is making some squeaky noise when I reel. I opened it up and cleaned it a bit but it was still there. I noticed that it seem to be from the crank instead of inside of the reel so it's probably just lack of oil on the reel

So what kind of oil is recommended for reels? Is there a specific brand and quality that i should look for. Something on a budget would be nice since the reel isn't an expensive one
>>
>>723128
grease
>>
>>722972
Lucky craft get shilled super hard for in the West Coast for inshore fishing. Everyone swear on it here. Is it that head and shoulder above other lure for its price tag?
>>
>>723128
go to academy and buy the penn angler's pack. Comes with a small jar of blue grease and oil. Oil the bearings and grease the gears.
>>
>>723137
this is what I use
>>
>>723137
*let me reword that to be more specific. For a baitcaster you would oil bearings and grease gears but it's simpler for a spinning reel.

Your main rotor assembly should be packed with the blue grease. You should oil the line roller bearing and possibly the rotor shaft.
Every other bearing should be packed with grease and all the gears get a thin coating of grease.
The reason being that the moving parts of a spinning real are only for retrieving and not casting. Therefore you can pack the bearings with grease and not lose casting distance. It will make your retrieve stiffer but it will also prevent a ton of corrosion and headache in the future. If you fish freshwater only and just want a smooth as butter retrieve you can probably get away with greasing the gears and rotor assembly and oiling the bearings though.

I was fishing a headland on the south coast of NSW a few years back, chasing yellowfin tuna and marlin and the fishing was super slow- we couldn't even get any live bait. I spent 4 hours nonstop casting an 80gram metal slug and finally hooked a smallish bonito which was destined to be a live bait. Had it at the base of the rocks ready to pull up when about 150kg of seal came from nowhere and took it straight off the hooks. Didn't catch anything else that day and I'm convinced if i got to send that bonito back out there I would have landed a marlin or good tuna. God I hate seals.

That pricing isn't that crazy, historically.

In the mid 50s, prices were about 1/10th of what they are today (as were wages-go figure). Back then, a top-of he line Pflueger Supreme went for $35, the midline Nobby went for $12.50, and he base model Trump went for $6.60.
What's REALLY come down in price are the spinning and spincasting reels. In the early 1960s, the predecessor to the Zebco 33 went for $10.30, and a Mitchell 300 went for $32.50. Nowadays you can get a Zebco 33 platinum (the more expensive one with the all-metal housing) for $35 and a Mitchell 300 for $50.
